April Showers Bring Bad Visibility… Is It Time for New Windshield Wipers?

Most drivers don't think about wiper blades until visibility is already reduced. Before the next downpour hits, take 60 seconds and work through these six questions to see if it’s time for a replacement.

When did you last replace your wiper blades?

If you're drawing a blank, or the answer is somewhere in the neighborhood of "last year" or "I honestly don't know,” that's your first sign. Industry standard is every six to twelve months, and a full winter season counts against that clock whether you used them heavily or not.

Do your wipers leave streaks or a hazy film on the glass?

If your wipers are smearing water sideways instead of clearing it cleanly, the rubber edge is worn or uneven. What looks like a minor annoyance from inside the car is actually a meaningful reduction in visibility, and at highway speeds, that matters.

Do your wipers squeak, chatter, or skip across the windshield?

Wipers should glide silently. Persistent squeaking or a bouncing, skipping motion across the glass means the rubber has hardened and lost its flexibility. That kind of uneven contact leaves gaps in coverage you can't afford in heavy rain.

Have you actually looked at the rubber blade recently?

Step outside and take a close look at the blade edge. Peeling, splits, or cracks (even small ones) mean the blade can no longer maintain full contact with the glass. Micro-cracks from winter cold are especially common and often invisible until the first real spring rain puts them to the test.

Did your car sit through a full winter?

Ice, road salt, freezing temperatures, and chemicals are hard on wiper rubber in ways that aren't always visible to the naked eye. Even blades that look fine after winter may have degraded significantly beneath the surface. Spring is the highest-risk season for wiper failure, right when you need them most.

Do your wipers leave any section of the windshield untouched?

If there's a dry arc or a patch of glass the blade consistently skips over, the blade arm may have lost tension or the blade itself has warped. That untouched section can lead to reduced visibility on the road and create a dangerous situation.
