As we prepare to recognize Earth Day on April 22, it’s a time to reflect on what we must continue to do to collectively ensure our future. At Pep Boys, we are continuing to build on a solid foundation that’s focused on reducing waste, using environmentally friendly materials, partnering with like-minded product suppliers, and employing business practices that promote a more sustainable workplace.
Waste not, want not
Our 1,000 Service Centers present a wide variety of ways to reduce waste through re-use and recycling, which can be especially important for hazardous materials that are best kept out of landfills. Most recently, in 2020, our stores:
- Recycled more than 4 million gallons of used motor oil
- Cleaned and recycled more than 120,000 gallons of antifreeze
- Recycled more than 1 million battery cores
- Recycled more than 3 million tires
- Recycled more than 4 million gallons of used motor oil
- Recycled more than 200,000 lbs. of cardboard
Our recycling efforts extend well beyond our own operations. If you are looking to recycle any of these items, find your nearest Pep Boys location and bring them in. Our team members are happy to help!
A cleaner way to work
We’re also finding new ways to reduce the environmental impact of Pep Boys processes and products – whether it be through new technologies and tools, or eco-friendly solutions. Today, that includes the use of digital vs paper customer inspections, work orders and receipts, eco-friendly bins and containers, water-based biodegradable parts washers, capturing and re-using service bay wash water, and more.
We also proudly offer carbon-neutral Pennzoil 0W motor oil that’s made from clean natural gas, not crude oil1. This product not only delivers superior protection for automobile engines – it also improves engine efficiency, helping every driver reduce his or her own CO2 footprint.
