HOW TO PREVENT TIRE DAMAGE

Your tires are what keep you rolling. They’re what grip and handle the surface of the road as you maneuver your car. Needless to say, well-functioning tires are pretty essential to your ride. Your tires are strong, but they aren’t supernatural, which is why we recommend the following notes as a good read for learning some quick and helpful facts on proper tire care.

Drive Safely & Never Get Too Comfortable

Whether you’re a new driver or a road veteran, you can’t always foresee what’s on the road ahead. Even if you’re a great driver, there are always outside influences, such as unsafe drivers, poorly kept roads, and harsh climates, that could lead to intense tire damage. That’s why it’s important you stay alert, no matter where you’re traveling.

Avoid Potholes, Curbs, & Debris

Your tires may be fierce and strong, but they’re not infallible. From driveway dips to potholes, there are many road hazards that can damage your tires. If you live in a four-season state, roads can become bumpy with potholes as temperatures warm at the end of winter. If a pothole is hit hard enough, your tires are at risk of being punctured, losing alignment, or possibly being damaged beyond repair.

At the same time, it’s also important to remember not to swerve suddenly to avoid a pothole. As tempting and easy as it may feel, it’s not safe and it only takes a flash of a second to run into another car. Your safest bet is to first check to see if you can safely change lanes before hitting the foreseen pothole ahead. If this cannot be executed, the best thing to do is drive at safe speeds so you can slow down and minimize the impact of a pothole if you need to drive over one.

Avoid Overloading your Vehicle

Overloading your car can severely damage your tires or could even cause a blowout. If you’re concerned that this may be you, check your owner’s manual or the placard inside your vehicle door for the gross vehicular weight rating.

Keep Your Tires Properly Inflated

It seems like a no brainer, but keeping your tires properly inflated is essential to tire car care that we cannot stress it enough. When correctly inflated, your tires will wear evenly and perform at their best. This will also prolong their life and improve your fuel ecenomy. You’ll also better handling, dependable traction, and a more comfortable ride. Also be aware of changing weather patterns - for every rise or drop in 10 degrees temperature, follows a rise or drop in PSI. For your recommended tire pressure, check the placard inside your vehicle door or refer to your owner’s manual.

If you want to check if your tires are properly inflated, stop by a Pep Boys near you so we can help.

Good driving habits will help keep your tires in good shape, keep you safe, and save you money and time in the long run, since you won’t have to repair or replace your tires as frequently.
