Mud tires are designed with large lugs and deep voids that make them perfect for off-road driving because they bite through soft, muddy conditions and deep snow. Mud tires also have an open-tread pattern which provides excellent traction on sand and rocky terrain, and they are designed with a reinforced sidewall and puncture resistant construction that helps withstand the abuse that comes with off-road driving.
Although mud tires are great off-road, they aren’t meant for prolonged use due to the open-tread pattern which provides less contact area on paved roads and reduces traction. The open-tread pattern of a mud tire also makes for a noisy, often bumpy ride at highway speeds. These tires are on the larger side, so they’re meant mainly for vehicles that are typically taken off road, such as SUVs and trucks.
