SERVICE DESCRIPTION

Safety Rating is a combination of two values: Load Index and Speed Rating for P-Metric and Euro Metric tire sizes; and Load Range and Speed Rating in the case of heavy duty LT (light truck) sizes.

Speed Rating is based on the speed that the tire is designed to be driven at for extended periods of time. All tires in the in the U.S. are designed to maintain legal U.S. speed limits. The speed rating of tires must match the maximum driving speed of the vehicle.

Load Index is used on P metric and Euro Metric sized tires and denotes a tire's load-carrying capacity at a specified inflation pressure. The load index is represented by a number, the higher the Load Index Value the greater the load the tire can safely carry. Vehicle manufacturers recommend a maximum load capacity based on a recommended minimum load index.

TIRE CLASS

Tire Class reflects how the tire will be used. There are four major categories: All-Season, Max Performance, Summer-Only and Winter-Use.

All-Season tires are suitable for year-round driving in all weather conditions.

Summer-Only & Max Performance tires are specifically designed for high-performance driving. Tire compound, tread design and speed ratings all combine to hug the road and maintain grip. Summer tires by nature are not ideal for winter driving due to lack of siding to grip winter roads.

Winter-Use tires have tread compounds and patterns that are specially designed for grip on snowy or icy road surfaces. They are not suitable for year-round use. The rubber compound used will wear more quickly on dry, summer roads. It is recommended that winter tires are fitted as a complete set to avoid potential handling issues.

TREAD TYPE

Tread Type is an important consideration when choosing a tire. There are four main types: Passenger, Highway, All-Terrain and Mud-Terrain.

Passenger denotes a tread that is suitable for normal use, a good all-round tread for normal driving.

Highway is a tread type unique to SUV and truck tires. The tread is optimized for normal everyday driving on paved surfaces. These tires can be driven off pavement, but are not ideally suited for off road traction. Highway tread patterns deliver a quiet ride.

For light trucks and specialty vehicles, All-Terrain tread types provide better off-road traction than standard highway truck tires. There more aggressive tread tends to be less quiet on paved roads. All Terrain tires are suitable for everyday use.

Mud-Terrain treads are specifically designed with wider tread blocks and higher void ratios to gain traction in off-road conditions. Mud Terrain tires can generate higher noise levels and tend to carry lower mileage warranties than other tread designs.

UTQG - Uniform Tire Quality Grade

UTQG (Uniform Tire Quality Grade) is made up of three values: treadwear, traction and temperature.

Treadwear is a relative numeric score, based on manufacturer tests, showing how well a tire can be expected to wear compared to other tires. A higher score means a tire could be expected to wear better.

Traction measures the tire's ability to stop a vehicle on wet roads. It doesn't reflect a tire's acceleration, cornering, or hydroplaning performance. Traction grades range from AA (highest) to C (lowest).

Temperature grades the tire's ability to withstand heat build-up, with A being the highest grade and C the lowest.

A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 to 115 mph
C - Between 85 to 100 mph
Treadwear:
Traction Asphalt - gForce
AA - Above 0.54
A - Above 0.47
B - Above 0.38
C - Less Than 0.38

C - Between 85 and 100 mph
Performance

Drive / Ride Performance Characteristics

All tires have the following six performance characteristics, divided into three sets of trade-offs. In most cases, a tire may perform excellently in one characteristic but only standard in the other.
Standard Ride Comfort & Standard Handling
Handling: Get stiff side wall for precise steering and cornering but settle for a firm ride with increased road noise.
Ride Comfort: Enjoy a quiet, smooth ride but lose some cornering ability.
Standard Treadwear & Standard Traction
Traction: Stop faster in wet conditions but expect a shorter tread life.
Treadwear: Get long, uniform wear across your tread pattern but expect less traction in wet conditions.
Standard Low Rolling Resistance & Standard High Speed Performance
High-Speed Performance: Get increased performance at higher speeds but sacrifice some fuel economy.
Low Rolling Resistance: Enjoy improved fuel efficiency but expect less high-speed cornering ability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by So far, so good Live in snowy upstate NY. Have had the tires on for about 1 month and feel very confident in snowy conditions. Haven't been on icy roads yet. December 28, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great grip Quiet and great grip in the snow and ice. Excellent. December 28, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Tires These were pricy tires but worth it. Have had these for about 4 weeks now. Noticed the difference from my all-season tires immediately. Good braking on ice, good cornering, really hold the snow. The ride is smoother than my regular tires were. Only downside, my gas mileage has gone down about 1/2mile per gallon, but maybe that is typical of snow tires. December 28, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by X-Ice Xi3 - Great tires These are the first snow tires I have ever purchased. We just went to a front wheel drive from an AWD. These tires have been great so far this winter, I would highly recommend them. December 28, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great snow tire I have used these snow tires on my 2008 Impala for four winters (this one included) and was so pleased that I recommended them to my daughter two years ago. She bought a set and has been getting good performance out of them, too, so I bought this new set for my son's 2009 Corolla. He has commented already how well he can travel through ice and snow. December 28, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by X-Ice Xi3 on a 2005 Mercedes C230k Quiet and capable. Better steering response and stability than the WS-60s installed on my '99 540i6. They replaced a set of worn PA2s; tires that provided nearly 8 years of dependable service. December 28, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by I would buy this product again and again Ice, hard packed snow, loose or slashy snow - this tire really sticks to the road. It is equally good on a dry higway. December 27, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Good snow tire. I have these on my 2012 Golf R and they are a solid winter tire. Not any more noisy then the stock all seasons and really good traction on snow and pretty good on ice. Thought they would be better given I have the X-ice2's on a Subaru Outback and that is the best winter tire I've ever driven on, period. But they are ok. Probably not as good due to being a lower profile tire. December 27, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by X-Ice Xi3 on a 2014 Mustang GT I bought a 2014 Mustang GT this May and already had planned to buy winter tires for it. As it came with 19" rims and summer tires, I had 18" rims that would work for the winter. I did research, and found of the few winter tires available for the car, the Michellen X-Ice were the best rated. I live in upstate NY, and we get some large amounts of snow and some ice in a typical winter. Many of my acquaintances think I am crazy to drive the Mustang in the winter and suggest I get a beater car. But to me, it is worth keeping just one car on the road, plus I enjoy driving it too much. I have driven a Mustang all year since my first one I bought in 2000, so I know how to handle them. I had these tires installed in October once the weather got cold. There have been a couple minor snow storms so far, and they have handled fine. They are about the same in road noise compared to my summer tires. They also get comparable gas mileage. I have put about 6000 miles on them, and I notice no unusual wear. They handle the rain well, and work with the traction control fine. I plan on using them through the next 3 or 4 more winters. Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent Snow Performance Best performance in snow that I have experienced with a snow tire. December 27, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by awesome tire Super quite, driven on small front drive car. steep hills in upstate ny. True dependable traction. December 27, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Next best thing to 4WD We live in Wisconsin and our driveway has a 10% grade and is about 1000 feet long. When we've got more than an inch of snow or when it's icy, we can't make it up the drive with all-weather tires. We installed Micheling X-ICE3 and the difference is amazing. We can now make it up the drive with 4 inches of snow and ice doesn't prevent us from getting home. We will never again be without these snow tires during winter driving. Don't know what the longevity of these tires will be, but we bought an extra set of wheels so we will take them off for summer driving and save that traction for winter. Hoping to get 3 winters out of these tires. December 27, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by I would buy those tires again very good tires December 27, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Good traction on light snow So far, they work great. Good traction on light snow. I haven't gone skiing yet so I don't know what they do when I go up north. I have a rear wheel drive car so winter traction is always a problem. These tires are a big help in mitigating that problem. December 27, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Love theses tires! These tires really go well in the snow & ice. The handling is excellent as well as the ride. I will buy these snow tires again. December 27, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by A great winter tire This is an excellent snow tire, great traction, smooth riding, with very good tread life. Feels great on snow and dry roads. Good handling for a snow tire. I think Michelin makes some really great tires. December 27, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by So far, so good! We drive a Prius and finding tires to make it safe in harsh winter conditions was a priority. We've had snow, sleet and very icy conditions so far this winter and no problems! Even in icy conditions, our car has felt sure-footed! We also have a long and steep driveway and we came home before the drive was sanded and up we went without any trouble. As long as the snow isn't deep (the Prius doesn't have much clearance) the tires allow us to move right along! We're very happy with these tires! December 27, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by great tires My Tesla loves them...great on ice and snow December 27, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Excellent Snow Tire Purchased these for my wife's 2013 Avalon Limited Hybrid and so far they are performing very well in snow, slush and hard pack conditions. They work at least as well as her previous Blizzaks with the advantage of being quiet on dry pavement. Also handling seems to be better then other snow tires. December 27, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Could not be more pleased! My dealer recommended that I try this tire even though I had been very pleased with another brand winter tire. Although reluctant, I heeded his advice and I am very glad that I did. The performance on snow and ice has been much better than I expected and they are better on wet pavement than the other brand. And they are much quieter! Another great success for Michelin! December 27, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great winter tire Purchased these new for the 2013 winter season. I regularly use four studless winter tires for my front wheel drive cars but this was my first experience with Michelin tires. So far I am very pleased with the performance of the Xi3 tires in snowy and icy road conditions. I have also noticed that they exhibit great handling characteristics on dry roads with considerably less road noise compared to the other winter tire models I have used in the past. Can't comment yet on tread wear but I hope to get several solid seasons out of them. December 27, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great snow tires for my 328 xi Have put a few thousand miles on these winter tires on my 2011 328xi sedan. They feel solid, handle well and provide excellent traction in the snow. The ride feel a lot better than the OEM run flat tires. I have these mounted on dedicated rims with a new spare wheel/tire in the trunk, which I had to buy separately. Overall, great performing snow tire for the 3 series. December 27, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great tire ! This is a great tire. The first time I was out in snow and ice I was very impressed with the go traction and stopping ability of these tires. December 27, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Awesome Awesome snow tire. Smooth ride. It is nice not to worry about getting to work on snowie roads. I live in Livingston county NY and drive to work before the plows get out. Would buy again. December 27, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Outstanding I have an old school Volvo RWD wagon that needs all the help it can get in snow. I was very pleased with the X-Ice tire that needed to be replaced and bought the Xi3 as replacements. Two snowstorms so far. In one of them, I easily drove through several inches of snow, including deeper plow apron snow. I was able to drive around the many drivers that were stuck on hills. I love the lateral grip these tire have and they are very quiet too. I have to dial back my summer driving style on dry pavement, but that is expected. Best winter tires I ever had. December 27, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by my 4x4 is lonely I put more miles on than the average person; I probably average 40,000 miles a year. I admit favoring Michelin tires for their ride comfort, and durability. I may pay more up front, but in the end, I come out ahead. Living in Minnesota, I mostly drive my 4x4 (2002 Silverado Z71) in the winter and my front wheel drive car (2005 Buick Lacrosse CXS) in the summer. Both have always had Michelins best all season tires. This year, I finally decided to invest in actual snow tires, namely the Michelin X-Ice Xi3's for my front wheel drive car. My two main reasons were curiosity (do they really work that much better than Michelins best all seasons), and to see if I could use my car more, and truck less during the challenging winter weather, AND to save on fuel costs by not driving the 4x4 as much. So far, I have only used my 4x4 once this winter, and that is because I needed to haul some cargo – the old girl is getting lonely ☺ I'm a believer in the Michelin X-Ice tires. – I will be using these in the winter from now on. Thanks Michelin! December 22, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best snow tires I bought 4 tires X-ice Xi3 for my small car (Mazda 2) and now I'm not worry about snow or ice. These tires are awesome. I feel I'm driving truck not small car with snow or ice. These tires are big difference from my old all season tires. Thank you so much Michelin for these awesome tires. Thank you again Michelin for Reward card. December 20, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by DON'T LOOK ANYWHERE ELSE These are the best snow tires I have ever experienced, I have used many brands but these are the best - drove 124 miles in a blizzard last week on essentially unplowed highways and back roads and was able to maintain near highway speeds the whole way without any incident. These tires have upped my winter driving experience many times over. Also I have experienced almost zero drop in fuel economy with these tires, which was very unexpected as other snow tires i have owned have severely reduced MPG's December 16, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by X-Ice Xi3 work in Alaska Just put these X-Ice tires on my Audi A6 and couldn't be happier with their performance and ride on shear ice, ice and snow, snow, packed snow and dry pavement. For 10 years in Alaska I've used studded tires and finally decided to try studless. We've had snow for two months and recently numerous days of freezing rain. These tires have held onto the road in every situation. I'm very happy to have gone studless. Black ice/shear ice is still a challenge, but I've never felt more confident in a set of tires and believe I stop just as quickly as I did with studded tires. December 7, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Snow tires.... I am using all weather tires since more than 2 years on my car, but then I heard a lot about winter tires. I search all good winter tires, of all top of the line, I found these (Xi- ice3) tire. The installer guy told me, these tires will make so much noise during normal driving. But when I drove, they were quiet, more quieter than my previous All weather Michelin tires. Since last week I was driving in snow. they are awesome. Handling, breaks are pretty good in the snow and in ice. I am happy with my decision... I will say worth to buy these tires. One thing these tires are a little bit more expensive than other tires in the market, but these tire worth every penny. November 24, 2013
