Michelin Winter X-Ice Xi3

  • Built to take on ice and snow with 3rd generation winter grip technology
  • MaxTouch Construction features a unique contact patch shape that evenly distributes the forces of acceleration, braking and cornering-maximizing wear life.
  • The unique bottom shape of the vertical sipes are what we call "teardrop," as they control the shear stress that reinforces the tread block robustness. High-speed driving is enabled thanks to this technology.

Load Range

Safety Rating is a combination of two values: Load Index and Speed Rating for P-Metric and Euro Metric tire sizes; and Load Range and Speed Rating in the case of heavy duty LT (light truck) sizes.

Speed Rating is based on the speed that the tire is designed to be driven at for extended periods of time. All tires in the in the U.S. are designed to maintain legal U.S. speed limits. The speed rating of tires must match the maximum driving speed of the vehicle.

Load Index is used on P metric and Euro Metric sized tires and denotes a tire's load-carrying capacity at a specified inflation pressure. The load index is represented by a number, the higher the Load Index Value the greater the load the tire can safely carry. Vehicle manufacturers recommend a maximum load capacity based on a recommended minimum load index.

Tire Class

Tire Class reflects how the tire will be used. There are four major categories: All-Season, Max Performance, Summer-Only and Winter-Use.

All-Season tires are suitable for year-round driving in all weather conditions.

Summer-Only & Max Performance tires are specifically designed for high-performance driving. Tire compound, tread design and speed ratings all combine to hug the road and maintain grip. Summer tires by nature are not ideal for winter driving due to lack of siding to grip winter roads.

Winter-Use tires have tread compounds and patterns that are specially designed for grip on snowy or icy road surfaces. They are not suitable for year-round use. The rubber compound used will wear more quickly on dry, summer roads. It is recommended that winter tires are fitted as a complete set to avoid potential handling issues.

Tread Type

Tread Type is an important consideration when choosing a tire. There are four main types: Passenger, Highway, All-Terrain and Mud-Terrain.

Passenger denotes a tread that is suitable for normal use, a good all-round tread for normal driving.

Highway is a tread type unique to SUV and truck tires. The tread is optimized for normal everyday driving on paved surfaces. These tires can be driven off pavement, but are not ideally suited for off road traction. Highway tread patterns deliver a quiet ride.

For light trucks and specialty vehicles, All-Terrain tread types provide better off-road traction than standard highway truck tires. There more aggressive tread tends to be less quiet on paved roads. All Terrain tires are suitable for everyday use.

Mud-Terrain treads are specifically designed with wider tread blocks and higher void ratios to gain traction in off-road conditions. Mud Terrain tires can generate higher noise levels and tend to carry lower mileage warranties than other tread designs.

UTQG - Uniform Tire Quality Grade

UTQG (Uniform Tire Quality Grade) is made up of three values: treadwear, traction and temperature.

Treadwear is a relative numeric score, based on manufacturer tests, showing how well a tire can be expected to wear compared to other tires. A higher score means a tire could be expected to wear better.

Traction measures the tire's ability to stop a vehicle on wet roads. It doesn't reflect a tire's acceleration, cornering, or hydroplaning performance. Traction grades range from AA (highest) to C (lowest).

Temperature grades the tire's ability to withstand heat build-up, with A being the highest grade and C the lowest.

A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 to 115 mph
C - Between 85 to 100 mph
Traction Asphalt - gForce
AA - Above 0.54
A - Above 0.47
B - Above 0.38
C - Less Than 0.38
A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 and 115 mph
C - Between 85 and 100 mph

Drive / Ride Performance Characteristics

All tires have the following six performance characteristics, divided into three sets of trade-offs. In most cases, a tire may perform excellently in one characteristic but only standard in the other.
Standard Ride Comfort & Standard Handling
Handling: Get stiff side wall for precise steering and cornering but settle for a firm ride with increased road noise.
Ride Comfort: Enjoy a quiet, smooth ride but lose some cornering ability.
Standard Treadwear & Standard Traction
Traction: Stop faster in wet conditions but expect a shorter tread life.
Treadwear: Get long, uniform wear across your tread pattern but expect less traction in wet conditions.
Standard Low Rolling Resistance & Standard High Speed Performance
High-Speed Performance: Get increased performance at higher speeds but sacrifice some fuel economy.
Low Rolling Resistance: Enjoy improved fuel efficiency but expect less high-speed cornering ability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Drives like an all season These tires really do drive like an all season. We didn't have a very snowy / icy winter last year so I was unable to test the limits of their abilities but the little we did have they cruised right through. Very confidence inspiring. August 7, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best snow tire ever Absoutley the best snow tires for my Honda. I've been running snows for years in the winter in New Hampshire and I've found the X-ice3 to be fantastic--up my hilly driveway and on all types of roads. August 7, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Good tire Only one winter with these so far, however, they have been excellent. They performed very well in the snow, quiet for a winter tire. Once I have more miles on them I could give a better opinion of wear etc. August 7, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent These tires were recommended to me by the dealership and they may be a little pricey, but they are worth it... August 7, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by The Best Snow Tire I Have Ever Owned! I drive my Subaru Outback equipped with Michelin X-Ice Xi3's on a daily basis for business in the mountains. I am on back country roads & on the highway. My X-Ice Xi3 tires make me feel safe & secure. I can count on Michelin to get me home. August 7, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Solid Performer The Michelin X-Ice Xi3 handled the rough and tough North-West winter superbly. From freezing rain on my 90 mile round trip commute to work each day, to rough deep snow on unplowed roads, I drove with confidence knowing I would get to my destination. Thanks Michelin for such a great winter tire. August 7, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Excellent winter tires These are on my wife's car, which I do not drive very hard in good condition. That said, I do not notice any appreciable difference in dry handling between these and all-season tires. I do, however, notice a large difference in ice/slush handling. There is almost no slip except in the very worst conditions, and often only when you are trying to get them to break loose. She has felt much safer and been much more happy with these than her stock all-seasons. That alone is worth the money. January 27, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Outstanding winter tires. I have a new X1 so I don't know about mpg yet. It seems to do about the same as OE LRR's. I have driven quite a bit in heavy snow (6"+) in northern New England. My vehicle seems to be far superior to others. I am basing my wear evaluation on my previous experience with X-Ice(X3) and X-Icei2(Audi TT). I guess the bottom line is that my last 3 sets of snows have been X-Ice. They keep getting better. Rated 5 out of 5 by Nice Winter Tire I have a 2010 Chevy HHR with a set of 4, 215-55-16 Ex Ice Si3 tires. Have had them since late November 2012. I drive on twisty, rural back roads a lot, mostly gravel and on dry pavement. The back roads get a glossy hard pack of snow and ice. These tires let me go 30 to 40 miles per hour where I could only go 25 on the bare gravel with my road tires. Amazing. They don't suddenly loose grip in turns and work very well with the directional stabilization feature on the car. Stopping is good on slippery roads and turning is also very good. These tires are quiet for a winter tire and really smooth out the ride. The rolling efficiency seems to be very good. On the highway at 65 mph I average 33 mpg. With the summer tires I get about 34 to 36, but it is also warmer out then. I am very pleases so far, but will have to wait to see how durable they are. I am expecting 30,000 miles of good winter performance. They are expensive tires but seem like a good insurance policy against finding my self in a ditch or being unable to maneuver out of the way of someone who is out of control. January 10, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by good ride good traction Mounted on tdi Jetta wagon, they work fine on my commute to work. A quiet tire better than other winter tires I've had. Not alot of snow yet but worked well in the 2"+ we had and also on the packed and icy gravel roads I've driven. Seem to handle as good as the summer tires I took off. December 26, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by excellent tires Great tires, the road noise is minimul, and the grip on ice and snow is outstanding. i live in the snow belt of Lake Erie where a typical winter has over 100" of snow. These are the first winter tires I have purchased in several years and I would highly recomend them to any friends or relatives. well worth the investment for the piece of mind given while driving in the bad weather December 24, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Confident driving in icky weather My new ride (Prius C) needed some aggressive yet smart snows. I'm a firm believer in having a dedicated set. The Michelin X Ice 3 were my first choice, rated excellent for traction, ice braking, rolling resistance (better gas mileage) and very good for road noise (won't interfere with listening to my 80's tunes). Now we can be safe, drive confident in Father Winter and still get fantastic gas mileage!! The price was very reasonable. I recently drove in a snow/rain/slush storm; spanning several states on a 12 hours road trip. I was very confident driving with Michelin X Ice 3; kept my distance from others and kept on trucking! Thanks Michelin Man!!! December 22, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Third Generation of X-Ice I've been using the Michelin X-Ice tires since they first came out and have recently equipped my recently purchased vehicle with the new generation Xi3. I live in the North East and am used to driving in heavy snow and ice. The tire handles well in both wet and dry conditions. Please note that once spring hits, the quicker you get this tire off the car the less wear you will experience. They aren't made for warm weather and although they will handle well they will wear out quickly. December 21, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Good Choice I bought these tires before Thanksgiving in anticipation of the oncoming winter. I'm originally from a part of Texas that doesn't get winter weather so driving in snow and ice is not something I'm very used to. I read some pretty good reviews about the X-Ice Xi2 so I decided these would be a good choice. I was not mistaken. They offer excellent grip compared to the all weathers I have. They are also really quiet. I have no complaints so far towards the tires, especially comsidering how wonderfully they are handling in my first time driving in snow. My only complaint is toward the rebate program since it has been about two months and I have not received it. December 21, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Worth the price This was a first purchase of snow tires specifically, and a purchase made with my employment of home health professional in mind.I need to see patients regardless of the weather, and since my employment has me covering 5 separate counties, I took the leap of faith to purchase these tires.I've owned Michelin tires and have always been satisfied with their product, so I researched these snow tires on-line and with professionals that deal with tires for their living. They informed me that I was purchasing the Cadillac of snow tires-top of the line. The first snow/ice storm I had the opportunity to test out these tires was Draco that scraped thru the Midwest. These tires performed as advertised and since I drive 30-35K/yr for my employment, I have found tires that I'll continue to purchase for winter as long as Michelin continues to make them. These tires are being used on a Honda Fit, and they held me to the road like flies on flypaper.A bit pricey, but worth every penny when you're out on a country road that's glazed over with ice and snow and no residents for miles.I don't worry about getting to where I'm going with these tires.BIG TIME THUMBS UP !!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent Tire Rides better than OEM on Acura TSX Sport Wagon. Great traction and control in snow. Quiet ride December 21, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Stuck like glue! The first major storm of the season in Minneapolis/Saint Paul and I have new X-Ice Xi3 tires on my Saab 9-3. Others are slipping and sliding, but my Saab is stuck to the road like glue. I have never had such a pleasant driving experience in unpleasant conditions. You can't let it go to your head though, bad conditions are bad conditions - drive carefully! December 8, 2012
