Load Range

Safety Rating is a combination of two values: Load Index and Speed Rating for P-Metric and Euro Metric tire sizes; and Load Range and Speed Rating in the case of heavy duty LT (light truck) sizes.

Speed Rating is based on the speed that the tire is designed to be driven at for extended periods of time. All tires in the in the U.S. are designed to maintain legal U.S. speed limits. The speed rating of tires must match the maximum driving speed of the vehicle.

Load Index is used on P metric and Euro Metric sized tires and denotes a tire's load-carrying capacity at a specified inflation pressure. The load index is represented by a number, the higher the Load Index Value the greater the load the tire can safely carry. Vehicle manufacturers recommend a maximum load capacity based on a recommended minimum load index.

Tire Class

Tire Class reflects how the tire will be used. There are four major categories: All-Season, Max Performance, Summer-Only and Winter-Use.

All-Season tires are suitable for year-round driving in all weather conditions.

Summer-Only & Max Performance tires are specifically designed for high-performance driving. Tire compound, tread design and speed ratings all combine to hug the road and maintain grip. Summer tires by nature are not ideal for winter driving due to lack of siding to grip winter roads.

Winter-Use tires have tread compounds and patterns that are specially designed for grip on snowy or icy road surfaces. They are not suitable for year-round use. The rubber compound used will wear more quickly on dry, summer roads. It is recommended that winter tires are fitted as a complete set to avoid potential handling issues.

Tread Type

Tread Type is an important consideration when choosing a tire. There are four main types: Passenger, Highway, All-Terrain and Mud-Terrain.

Passenger denotes a tread that is suitable for normal use, a good all-round tread for normal driving.

Highway is a tread type unique to SUV and truck tires. The tread is optimized for normal everyday driving on paved surfaces. These tires can be driven off pavement, but are not ideally suited for off road traction. Highway tread patterns deliver a quiet ride.

For light trucks and specialty vehicles, All-Terrain tread types provide better off-road traction than standard highway truck tires. There more aggressive tread tends to be less quiet on paved roads. All Terrain tires are suitable for everyday use.

Mud-Terrain treads are specifically designed with wider tread blocks and higher void ratios to gain traction in off-road conditions. Mud Terrain tires can generate higher noise levels and tend to carry lower mileage warranties than other tread designs.

UTQG - Uniform Tire Quality Grade

UTQG (Uniform Tire Quality Grade) is made up of three values: treadwear, traction and temperature.

Treadwear is a relative numeric score, based on manufacturer tests, showing how well a tire can be expected to wear compared to other tires. A higher score means a tire could be expected to wear better.

Traction measures the tire's ability to stop a vehicle on wet roads. It doesn't reflect a tire's acceleration, cornering, or hydroplaning performance. Traction grades range from AA (highest) to C (lowest).

Temperature grades the tire's ability to withstand heat build-up, with A being the highest grade and C the lowest.

A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 to 115 mph
C - Between 85 to 100 mph
Treadwear: 640
Traction Asphalt - gForce
AA - Above 0.54
A - Above 0.47
B - Above 0.38
C - Less Than 0.38
A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 and 115 mph
C - Between 85 and 100 mph

Drive / Ride Performance Characteristics

All tires have the following six performance characteristics, divided into three sets of trade-offs. In most cases, a tire may perform excellently in one characteristic but only standard in the other.
Standard Ride Comfort & Standard Handling
Handling: Get stiff side wall for precise steering and cornering but settle for a firm ride with increased road noise.
Ride Comfort: Enjoy a quiet, smooth ride but lose some cornering ability.
Standard Treadwear & Standard Traction
Traction: Stop faster in wet conditions but expect a shorter tread life.
Treadwear: Get long, uniform wear across your tread pattern but expect less traction in wet conditions.
Standard Low Rolling Resistance & Standard High Speed Performance
High-Speed Performance: Get increased performance at higher speeds but sacrifice some fuel economy.
Low Rolling Resistance: Enjoy improved fuel efficiency but expect less high-speed cornering ability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tires to make you love your car again Purchased the Michelin Premeir A/S tires for my Hyundai Elantra today. These tires are so smooth and quiet it made me feel like I was driving a new car again. These tires are awesome. I have read that once you have a few thousand miles on tires they get even quieter. Not sure if this is true but I cannot imagine my car getting any quieter with road noise. Killer tires!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Tires Around I have used Michelin tires for many, many years and can think of NOTHING bad to say about them. The Michelin Premier A/S tires I purchased yesterday replaced a set of tires that came on the vehicle when it was purchased. When I drove off with the new tires, I couldn't believe I had waited so long to change them. The new Michelin tires, as usual, were so nice it was as if I was almost floating on a cloud with the tires touching the road. Handling superb, road noise non-existent, ride smooth as a cloud...I LOVE Michelin Tires...and for safety they can't be beat. This is a real review from a 70 yr. old Grannie who has always loved to drive...especially with Michelins!!!! My ratings for "wear" cover all the Michelins I've had thru the years. Other ratings are only for the Premier A/S.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Tire Driven over 1,200 miles Have driven the tire over 1,200 miles now, so time for review. Coming from the Michelin Energy MXV4. some comments in review about Noise, since I drive with my head inside the window, did not notice anything different from my previous tire. About the same as all other tires I have driven on passenger cars. Fuel Economy - neutral to previous tire, no gain/no loss. comfort - significantly better than my worn down Energy MXV but can say I love the ride so far. Smooth on normal street / freeway surfaces. Overall this is a great tire. The true test of the technology in this tire will be after 25-30,000 miles as the tire has significant wear. But from the first 1,200 miles, love the tire glad I made the upgrade from the MXV.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved the MXV4, but all good things. . . Had to replace the tires on my daughters 2002 Honda Accord EX. Immediately could tell a difference in handling and accelleration. The car drove like new again. Much quieter as well. This might be true of any new tire, but Michelin has always been a solid choice and the previous Primacy MXV4 was always what I put on my car. The idea behind the new Premier tire makes sense and as long as the harder rubber lasts as long as the warranty, they will be well worth the extra $$$. Could have put cheaper tires on this car, but hard to put a price on your daughter's safety.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Tire I am so glad I purchased this tire. It is such an improvement over the original tires that came on my 2013 Volkswagen Passat SE. The Braking is better the Ride quality is quieter and smoother. Handling is great. All around a great tire money well spent. I would defiantly recommend these tires for anyone in the market for an all season tire. Kudos to Michelin for Leading the tire industry in the best technology and design.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Michelin Tire Recently purchased the new Premier A/S tires for my car and love them. Day after they were installed, we had a big rain and tires responded well, especially braking. No road noise and great steering/handling. Haven't had them long, but seems to already be getting a little better gas mileage.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I've been pleased since 1985 Michelin is the only Tire manufacturer my family has experienced tires lasting 5% to 10% longer than the guarantee. The Others barely hold up to their promise. It's nice to know a guarantee/promise still means something to Michelin. As a retired soldier who served 27 years a promise still means something to me and my great-grandson; who will be born Sept. 6th, 2014. I've recommended Michelin tires since 1985.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quiet Ride - Decibels measured Have an app on my iphone and had purposefully measured the decibels on my old tires and compared to the new Premiers - 10+ decibels quieter. Not sure how any other reviews could be claiming how they wear, as this tire was just released in April of this year; but happy to be back in the "Michelin fold"...;o)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Glad to have Michelin Tires! I was FINALLY able to get a new set of Michelin Premier A/S 205/50R17 93V on my Chevy Sonic LTZ Hatchback and boy do they feel fantastic! Living in the Pacific northwest, these tire do as advertised by griping the wet roads especially when taking winding turns through the hills and valleys. They are also much quieter than my last set of tires and I've noticed that on my front-wheel drive, they don't slip when accelerating from a stop on wet highways like my last tires. I've only had these new tires for a few weeks so I can't give my assessment on their wear-life. The ONLY downside was that there isn't a local Michelin dealer where I live and I had to drive about 15 extra miles to the next town. But it was well worth it! I'll definitely look into purchasing Michelins when I get ready to buy a new set of snow tires!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply................Awesome! Purchased a set of 245/45R18's for my 2006 LS430. Had a 4 wheel alignment done and tire pressure set @ 40 psi. We immediately noticed how quiet these tires are! We could faintly hear the V-8 in our LS as it was going up through the gears. Braking is silent. Highway is silent. Couldn't be more pleased! Thank you Michelin!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great tires Replaced my OEM tires for my Chevy CRUZE, Wow what a difference in handling and road noise. I recommend these tires. Can't wait until next winter to see how they handle in the snow. The only reason I am dropping it one star is the price. I never sent so much for tires. (MICH Premier A/S 215-60R16 95V - 22475). I didn't rate Wear-Life and Fuel Efficiency because I don't have enough information to rate them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quiet and Comfortable I have a Chevrolet Cruze Eco that I've put a lot of miles on, and I needed to replace the OEM Assurance Fuel Saver tires. These new Premier A/S tires are quieter, handle better, and have a smoother ride than the originals, which weren't that bad to start with! Fuel economy seems to be equivalent to the original tires (so far). Having a tire that performs well in wet weather, even when worn, is important in western Washington.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not what I expected !! Looking for a Quiet and Comfortable ride ?? Installed the Premier A/S three weeks ago 215/45/R17 These tires are far from being quiet and comfortable, road noise and hard ride with manufactures recommended PSI

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Tires I replaced all 4 tires on my 2006 Accord LX Sedan 4 days ago, I was set o going for the Primacy MXV4 but learned that they were discontinued and replaced with the Premier A/S. I read about the technology behind the Premier A/S and decided to pull the trigger despite the risks with new products. It has only been 4 days but so far I am not disappointed and am quite impressed. Contrary to the other reviewer, these are the most quiet tires I have ever rode or driven on. I can't even hear them at 35psi (I'm supposed to be at 29/30) and trust me, I don't take road noise lightly. They are very very comfortable. Braking and accelerating feels as if the car was new - and somehow I experienced heavy rain and frost these past 4 days and had no issues. The tires are also very very stable at speed, it's too easy to go up to 80mph+ and not even feel it. The only drawback compared to the performance all season tires I'm coming from is the cornering stability, the Premier's are much softer and does not hug the pavement as nicely but overall the handling is great. I can't take any stars away for a tire that does everything else so well.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DISAPPOINTED My car is an 09 Buick Lucerne CXL which came a set of MXV4 energy tires (best tires ever!). I was one of the first to buy a set of premier tires and was expecting something like my original set of energy tires (81,000 miles on them). I was VERY DISAPPOINTED. These tires are nothing like my originals. They ride hard, are loud, handling is not too good and have a vibration around 70 mph, which is probably due to the large amount of wheel weights added. I'm headed back to exchange them for the MXV4 plus tires at an added expense since I can't get the H rated tire instead of the V rated.
