Load Range

Safety Rating is a combination of two values: Load Index and Speed Rating for P-Metric and Euro Metric tire sizes; and Load Range and Speed Rating in the case of heavy duty LT (light truck) sizes.

Speed Rating is based on the speed that the tire is designed to be driven at for extended periods of time. All tires in the in the U.S. are designed to maintain legal U.S. speed limits. The speed rating of tires must match the maximum driving speed of the vehicle.

Load Index is used on P metric and Euro Metric sized tires and denotes a tire's load-carrying capacity at a specified inflation pressure. The load index is represented by a number, the higher the Load Index Value the greater the load the tire can safely carry. Vehicle manufacturers recommend a maximum load capacity based on a recommended minimum load index.

Tire Class

Tire Class reflects how the tire will be used. There are four major categories: All-Season, Max Performance, Summer-Only and Winter-Use.

All-Season tires are suitable for year-round driving in all weather conditions.

Summer-Only & Max Performance tires are specifically designed for high-performance driving. Tire compound, tread design and speed ratings all combine to hug the road and maintain grip. Summer tires by nature are not ideal for winter driving due to lack of siding to grip winter roads.

Winter-Use tires have tread compounds and patterns that are specially designed for grip on snowy or icy road surfaces. They are not suitable for year-round use. The rubber compound used will wear more quickly on dry, summer roads. It is recommended that winter tires are fitted as a complete set to avoid potential handling issues.

Tread Type

Tread Type is an important consideration when choosing a tire. There are four main types: Passenger, Highway, All-Terrain and Mud-Terrain.

Passenger denotes a tread that is suitable for normal use, a good all-round tread for normal driving.

Highway is a tread type unique to SUV and truck tires. The tread is optimized for normal everyday driving on paved surfaces. These tires can be driven off pavement, but are not ideally suited for off road traction. Highway tread patterns deliver a quiet ride.

For light trucks and specialty vehicles, All-Terrain tread types provide better off-road traction than standard highway truck tires. There more aggressive tread tends to be less quiet on paved roads. All Terrain tires are suitable for everyday use.

Mud-Terrain treads are specifically designed with wider tread blocks and higher void ratios to gain traction in off-road conditions. Mud Terrain tires can generate higher noise levels and tend to carry lower mileage warranties than other tread designs.

UTQG - Uniform Tire Quality Grade

UTQG (Uniform Tire Quality Grade) is made up of three values: treadwear, traction and temperature.

Treadwear is a relative numeric score, based on manufacturer tests, showing how well a tire can be expected to wear compared to other tires. A higher score means a tire could be expected to wear better.

Traction measures the tire's ability to stop a vehicle on wet roads. It doesn't reflect a tire's acceleration, cornering, or hydroplaning performance. Traction grades range from AA (highest) to C (lowest).

Temperature grades the tire's ability to withstand heat build-up, with A being the highest grade and C the lowest.

A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 to 115 mph
C - Between 85 to 100 mph
Treadwear: 300
Traction Asphalt - gForce
AA - Above 0.54
A - Above 0.47
B - Above 0.38
C - Less Than 0.38
A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 and 115 mph
C - Between 85 and 100 mph

Drive / Ride Performance Characteristics

All tires have the following six performance characteristics, divided into three sets of trade-offs. In most cases, a tire may perform excellently in one characteristic but only standard in the other.
Excellent Ride Comfort & Standard Handling
Handling: Get stiff side wall for precise steering and cornering but settle for a firm ride with increased road noise.
Ride Comfort: Enjoy a quiet, smooth ride but lose some cornering ability.
Standard Treadwear & Standard Traction
Traction: Stop faster in wet conditions but expect a shorter tread life.
Treadwear: Get long, uniform wear across your tread pattern but expect less traction in wet conditions.
Standard Low Rolling Resistance & Standard High Speed Performance
High-Speed Performance: Get increased performance at higher speeds but sacrifice some fuel economy.
Low Rolling Resistance: Enjoy improved fuel efficiency but expect less high-speed cornering ability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent tire I have 4 of these tires mounted on my 2012 Acura TL. I had the origional tires replaced after only 100 miles. the Pilot MXM4 was recommended by a friend. I have not been disappointed by this purchase. I have driven the car about 3500 miles sofar. The tires provide a very comfortable ride and there has not been any type of failure. I am completely satisfied with the performance of this tire and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Wear For an OE Tire These tires came stock on my wife's 09 Fusion. My wife is not an easy driver and yet she got 77,000 miles out of the original set. This made the new tire decision very easy as we replaced the old with a new set of Michelins. Anyone that asks me about tires will get the recommendation of Michelins. When you get 77,000 miles out of a 50,000 mile tire you can't go wrong. Thanks for a great product!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sticks to the road like glue! In the winter, where I live we get snow and ice, sometimes in the form of rain, on our roads. These tires ignore those conditions and act as if it were summer. I use to feel a little bit nervous when the weather reporter said,"Bad condition for your morning commute", but not any more. It's a little bit fun, now!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT TIRES! I recently replaced the old Michelin Pilot MXM4 tires on my 2006 Cadillac STS with the same tires. The old tires had 53,000 miles on them; they were the original tires that came on the car when I bought it. There was no doubt in my mind what kind of new tires I was going to purchase. The old tires far exceeded the life and performance I expected from them, so I knew the replacement tires had to be Michelin Pilot MXM4 tires. I highly recommend anyone looking to buy new tires to consider these tires. Well worth the money!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Veteran mechanic review Size 215/45/17 pilot mxm4. I live near chicago so i drive on these tires except in the winter. I strongly recommend snow tires for anyone driving in snow, even if you have all wheel drive, no matter what brand or model of so called all season tire you have. The mxm 4 i think is the best touring tire you can buy next to the primacy mxm 4. It is quiet, long lasting, great in rain, and wont cup and get noisy with age.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WONDERFUL TIRE I Own A 2008 Honda Accord And I Had To Write This Review After Reading The Other Reviews. I Purchased My Car New And Have Had The Dealership Where I Purchased My Car Do All Service And Rotations On My Tires. I Have 75,000 Miles On My Original Michelin Tires. Most Of These Miles Have Been Highway Miles.....Between Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. These Tires Are Wonderful! They Still Look Great And Look To Have A Lot Of Tread Left......But Being A Woman And On The Road So Much....I Just Personally Feel It's Time For New Tires And At The Recommendation Of My Dealership I Am Having A New Set (Same Tire) Put On. I Have Priced No Other Tire, So I Can't Say Anything About Price. I Did Call Michelin And Ask Them About The Best Tire For My Car And They Gave Me The Same Recommendation As My Dealership And The Price Was In Line As My Dealership Had Quoted. I Once Had A Man Tell Me If You Purchased A $5.00 Car......Buy A $5.00 Tire! At The Time I Didn't Quite Understand What He Was Saying.....But With Age And Experience.....I Got It!!! You Get What You Pay For. I Read Reviews....And Have Trusted What Most Of The Writers Of Those Review Said. I Do Hope This Review Will Help You In Your Decision To Purchase Tires.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GOT 115K MILES? This tire is unbelievable guys. I now have 115K on these tires. I rotate these tires almost every month with oil change. I drive 50K-60K miles a year in my Chevy Cruze RS LTZ. I'm a Insurance agent that go out to clients homes. These tires came with my Cruze and i'm getting ready to buy new Michelin's within the next week. Just trying to see if I wanna go with the same model or switch to the Sport A/S 3 model. I have made believers out of all of the other 50-75 agents that work with me buying tires every 6-12 months. I always have agents around my car looking at my tires. They cant believe I still have the same tires. Now all of the guys wanna get Michelin tires. Great Tire Michelin Man!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very happy with my MXM4s In one year I have 15,000 mi on my MXM4. (I have 205,000 mi on my '02 Lincoln LS). Handling and traction is superb. Ride is very quiet. Hydroplaning is minimal. Even in snow, but be RWD careful. Highly recommend Michelin, even though slightly higher price than competitor. Would I buy these again? You betcha.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Handeling - Great Customer Service The tire has great handling, braking, and looks. They came on our new 2009 CTS and 2011 CTS. When the tire is cold, it rides like an old truck tire because it has nylon in it. The tire wear wasn't bad on the 2008, but it doesn't look like they will make 30,000 on the 2011. Our weather is typically, hot, wet, some dry, some cold, rarely ice and even less snow. Michelin has the best customer service ever - so far and I don't think it will change. Just wish Michelin would use Aramid in their tires instead of nylon. That's the only thing I don't like about this tire. I would recommend this tire to others, and let them know they ride rough when they are cold.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Quite Smooth Summer Tire Amazingly Quiet and Smooth ride. Came stock on my Fusion. Replacing at 51,000 with new set of same. Not a snow and ice tire hard to call it an "all season" in the north. Commute to Seattle over Cascades. Great on wet roads. Runs nice and cool.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Attention to detail These tires came as OEM on my 2013 Honda Civic Si. When I picked up the car and drove it a few hundred miles on curvy roads I was a bit disappointed. BUT after checking the tire pressure (cold) I found that the dealer had over inflated the tires by 8 pounds each. I lowered the pressure to the recommended (Honda) pressure and retraced my prior route. What a difference it made to be exact on the tire pressure! Performance tires like Michelin are very air pressure sensitive. I check the tires weekly due to large temperature swings (Arizona) and keep them at 32psi. The tires are comfortable, quiet, and handle great. Bottom line? Pay attention to the air pressure!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Nice 3 season tire, terrible in snow Nice three season tire, however it performs poorly in winter conditions, car will loose traction in 1 to 2 inches of snow. Have only 17000 miles on tires and will replace tires before next winter

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Michelin fan since 1979 I purchased a used CTS in 2005. After a Chicago autumn's worth of rain and the first snowfall, I knew I needed new tires with better traction. I purchased a set of Pilots. Loved those tires! What a difference they made. The tires handled very well in any kind of bad weather and were sticky enough on dry pavement to keep me happy when spring came around and driving became fun again. They held up well to my half local road and half highway driving until I traded the car in with 45,000 miles on the tires and plenty of tread left. Now my "new" 2009 CTS AWD w/Performance Pkg. is ready for tires. The Pilot MXM4s were provided as OEM standard tires on this model. I have 58,000 miles on these tires and still have a decent amount of tread left, although the edges are starting to show wear. Although the price is significantly more than the last set, this week I will purchase another set of Pilot MXM4s. Thanks, Michelin, for a great product and giving me peace of mind.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 65,670+ I don't know much about tires but these tires survived 65,670 miles when replaced. I think they had a few miles left, however replaced them only because my other half was freaked that I had this many miles on a set of tires! I replaced them with the same tires…. Did not know they would be so expensive!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointed My Acura has 66,000 miles and I am about to replace my 2nd set of these tires. Ride is ok but I expect much better wear from a Michelin, especially for the price. Have never before had to replace tires with less than 40,000 miles. I consider these overrated and overpriced.
