Load Range

Safety Rating is a combination of two values: Load Index and Speed Rating for P-Metric and Euro Metric tire sizes; and Load Range and Speed Rating in the case of heavy duty LT (light truck) sizes.

Speed Rating is based on the speed that the tire is designed to be driven at for extended periods of time. All tires in the in the U.S. are designed to maintain legal U.S. speed limits. The speed rating of tires must match the maximum driving speed of the vehicle.

Load Index is used on P metric and Euro Metric sized tires and denotes a tire's load-carrying capacity at a specified inflation pressure. The load index is represented by a number, the higher the Load Index Value the greater the load the tire can safely carry. Vehicle manufacturers recommend a maximum load capacity based on a recommended minimum load index.

Tire Class

Tire Class reflects how the tire will be used. There are four major categories: All-Season, Max Performance, Summer-Only and Winter-Use.

All-Season tires are suitable for year-round driving in all weather conditions.

Summer-Only & Max Performance tires are specifically designed for high-performance driving. Tire compound, tread design and speed ratings all combine to hug the road and maintain grip. Summer tires by nature are not ideal for winter driving due to lack of siding to grip winter roads.

Winter-Use tires have tread compounds and patterns that are specially designed for grip on snowy or icy road surfaces. They are not suitable for year-round use. The rubber compound used will wear more quickly on dry, summer roads. It is recommended that winter tires are fitted as a complete set to avoid potential handling issues.

Tread Type

Tread Type is an important consideration when choosing a tire. There are four main types: Passenger, Highway, All-Terrain and Mud-Terrain.

Passenger denotes a tread that is suitable for normal use, a good all-round tread for normal driving.

Highway is a tread type unique to SUV and truck tires. The tread is optimized for normal everyday driving on paved surfaces. These tires can be driven off pavement, but are not ideally suited for off road traction. Highway tread patterns deliver a quiet ride.

For light trucks and specialty vehicles, All-Terrain tread types provide better off-road traction than standard highway truck tires. There more aggressive tread tends to be less quiet on paved roads. All Terrain tires are suitable for everyday use.

Mud-Terrain treads are specifically designed with wider tread blocks and higher void ratios to gain traction in off-road conditions. Mud Terrain tires can generate higher noise levels and tend to carry lower mileage warranties than other tread designs.

UTQG - Uniform Tire Quality Grade

UTQG (Uniform Tire Quality Grade) is made up of three values: treadwear, traction and temperature.

Treadwear is a relative numeric score, based on manufacturer tests, showing how well a tire can be expected to wear compared to other tires. A higher score means a tire could be expected to wear better.

Traction measures the tire's ability to stop a vehicle on wet roads. It doesn't reflect a tire's acceleration, cornering, or hydroplaning performance. Traction grades range from AA (highest) to C (lowest).

Temperature grades the tire's ability to withstand heat build-up, with A being the highest grade and C the lowest.

A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 to 115 mph
C - Between 85 to 100 mph
Treadwear: 500
Traction Asphalt - gForce
AA - Above 0.54
A - Above 0.47
B - Above 0.38
C - Less Than 0.38
A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 and 115 mph
C - Between 85 and 100 mph

Drive / Ride Performance Characteristics

All tires have the following six performance characteristics, divided into three sets of trade-offs. In most cases, a tire may perform excellently in one characteristic but only standard in the other.
Standard Ride Comfort & Standard Handling
Handling: Get stiff side wall for precise steering and cornering but settle for a firm ride with increased road noise.
Ride Comfort: Enjoy a quiet, smooth ride but lose some cornering ability.
Standard Treadwear & Standard Traction
Traction: Stop faster in wet conditions but expect a shorter tread life.
Treadwear: Get long, uniform wear across your tread pattern but expect less traction in wet conditions.
Standard Low Rolling Resistance & Standard High Speed Performance
High-Speed Performance: Get increased performance at higher speeds but sacrifice some fuel economy.
Low Rolling Resistance: Enjoy improved fuel efficiency but expect less high-speed cornering ability.

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 188 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great A/S performance - reasonable price After researching both summer and all season performance tires, I opted to go with the Pilot Sport A/S 3 because of the stellar reviews - from tire professionals and regular drivers. The tire has given great dry traction - even better than the summer dry it replaced! December 28, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by It feels good knowing that I am safe. Used on my 2008 Audi A4 Quattro. Smooth ride, and excellent handling under wet weather conditions. December 28, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Excellent Handling w/ Drop in MPG I purchased these tires because they looked like the perfect combination of attributes that would increase my Accord's handling and grip without loosing efficiency or all weather traction. And they are have been fantastic tires that have dramatically increased my car's handling while being comfortable and with a 500 tread wear rating they should last. But I have noticed an immediate drop in my fuel economy after having them installed. Although these tires are in the Green X category for being fuel efficient like the Primacy tires they replaced (and the Energy tires they replaced) there is a definite cost for all of the incredible grip that these tires produce. I've had my car and it's alignment checked out twice (by the dealer and another shop) to make sure that nothing else could be causing my 3-4 mpg drop since installing the tires. Disappointing, but even with this downside, I still smile around every corner with these Pilot Sport AS3s. December 28, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Very sticky Very grippy. My car feels more like it is on rails. Handles well in rain and snow. Slightly more road noise, but well worth it. December 28, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Very good on snow and ice, quiet Great tires that have proved themselves in the snow and ice of the early 2013 winter conditions. Only a dedicated winter tire will do better. Unlike a winter tire, you can keep this on year round. Tire is also quiet and also provides excellent traction in dry and wet conditions. Have not been on long enough to judge wear. December 28, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by AWESOME in Snow/Wet/Dry I have a 2008 335xi e90 with staggard style 162 18" wheels and the best thing I could have done is to ditch the RFTs (Now when I go over uneven roads or potholes.. its no longer a teeth jarring ride)!!!! I actually wanted to get the MPSS (Super sports) but I need this tire to handle the NJ winter months as well for daily driving (Which means I can't use the dedicated summer MPSS). It handled really well in Wet/Dry situations for Oct/Nov, recently we had a large amount of snow and I was able to easily drive up and down the NJ GSP before they plowed the roads. I was able to move across lanes with easy @ 50 MPH in unplowed snow!!!! Today we had a huge amount of rain and I was able to feel very comfortable at speed (everyone around me was driving way too slow but I was easily able to get around them and make good distance). These are by far the best tires I have ever used!!! December 28, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by I WOULD BUY THIS TIRE AGAIN SO FAR IT IS A VERY GOOD TIRE.. December 27, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Awesome Rubber I've had these tires on for 3 weeks now and have noticed a great improvement in traction and ride quality. The stock HX MXM4 tires that came with my 2011 altima coupe were awful in the rain, mind you they still had significant thread left. My car is lowered on eibach springs making bad roads a pain to drive in. As soon as I first drove in the A/S 3's, I could feel an improvement in comfort. I drive an average of 18 miles everyday mostly at 30-50 mph. Overall these tires have improved my driving experience. December 27, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by So far, so great This is my third set of Michelin for this car. Each of the sets have been exceptional tires. Great ride and performance for my Mercedes E500. December 27, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Outstanding Tire Replaced OEM runflats on my Mini S. The improvement in ride and handling was dramatic. It would have been hard to convince me that the Mini could handle any better than it already did but these tires hold like they are glued to the road. Wet handling is also outstanding. There has also been a significant improvement in ride quality. The OEM tires (high-end name brand) were harsh at best. These tires although firm to not transmit nearly as much shock through the car. They were difficult to find but well worth the effort. December 27, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Awesome I had these once before. They don't have the cool tread in the middle any more in this new version, but they handle as well. They stick to the road like glue. I love to drive and driving curvy mountain roads is a joy with these tires. The only down side is that the mileage expectancy is a little lower than what I usually hope for. These are expensive, but worth it to me to feel safe and know I can drive the mountains with no worries. They are a tad noisier than the primacy tires I had the last go around. Overall I love them. December 27, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Exceptional Tire There is a reason why these tires were listed as one of the best (and often top rated) by most of the recognized tire rating sources. They provide excellent handling, ride comfort and braking. We noticed these attributes just after they were installed and have been pleased with these tires for the last 4 months. It is too soon to comment on tread life, but the published test results are positive. December 27, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Oustanding commuter Installed these on my daily driver. I average about 400 miles per week. These tires are extremely quiet, provide a soft ride and handle well on dry, wet, and snow packed pavement. I have put about 7000 miles on these tires in all types of conditions and am very pleased with the performance. December 27, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Pilot Sport A/S 3 Just getting them broken in. Smooth drive. Good handling. Great appearance. December 27, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Love my A/S 3 I love my A/S 3'a. The ride is even. The grip is firm. And I've yet to find a situation they can't handle. I have a 323i 5 speed. Whil I'm not a speed deamon, I do enjoy an occasional spirited entrance onto the interstate. Down shift to 2nd, accelerate and they hug the corners in the s curve as I merge into traffic. It's a blast! December 27, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Wow!!! for these tires I needed new tires on my Mercedes E63 and would ordinarily just put a set on Pilot Sports back on. This time I decided that I would try the new Pilot Sport A/S3s as I live in New Orleans where it rains quite a lot. These tires have proven to be almost as good as the Pilot Sports in dry conditions, and a whole lot better in wet conditions. For me these A/S3s are real winners and I will put another set on the E63 when these wear out. December 27, 2013
Rated 3 out of 5 by tires are good, rebate nope tires are good as expected. Still waiting on the rebate card December 27, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by "You can't go wrong buying these." I have these bad boys on my 2004 Monte Carlo SS Supercharged. It's not good to have a lead foot, but I know with these tires that I've had no problems with traction at all. December 27, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Very Good Tires I purchased these on recommendation, after trying some other ultra high performance A/S tires. I found these to be stable in the corners with minimal roll in hard turns on both Dry and Wet roads. I was worried about the lack of Winter reviews but bought these anyway. I went to Stevens Pass Wa. to play in the snow, I found these tires to have very good predictability in the snow which ranged from 2" to 6" and fairly good predictability on bare ice. I had no problems driving in the wet, snowy and Icy conditions, these are all around good tires. December 14, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Now, these are nice tires! I've got a 2003 BMW Performance ZHP 330i with factory staggered 18" wheels, and I've been running the Michelin A/S2 tires. Since I can't rotate them, I'll run 2 sets on the rear to 1 set on the front. I was very pleased with these tires and have a video of me driving through 10" of new snow with the front scoop pushing snow over the hood! Only a 2-wheel drive car! Now, I've just bought a set of AS3 tires, and I really like them. They seem quieter than the AS2s and handle just amazing. And for a low-profile tire (255/35-18) they are very comfortable riding. My goal is to have 1 set of tires that I can run in all 4 seasons, here in Colorado. The AS3s are going to fit that bill nicely. So far, I've only been able to test them on dry interstate, and hardpack snow/ice on side roads. Amazing traction! There really is no reason to run dedicated snow tires as these will take me through anything my car can reasonable drive through. A good test of all driving conditions is from I-70, then Hwy40 to Winter Park, which takes you through many switchbacks, over Berthoud Pass. Patchy ice/snow and dry roads, sharp corners, and downhill braking test all the capabilities of these new AS3s. They really do work that well! Thanks, Michelin! December 13, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Awesome All Season Tire I have just purchased and installed these beauties on my C7 Corvette Z51. Awesome performance in light snow and icy conditions! I researched tires extensively looking for a cold climate tire for my new Corvette and wnet with the new Pilot Sport A/S 3's all around! This morning before getting the tires, it took 4 attempts to get up my 8% grade driveway on light snowy/icy conditions! Now the Corvette goes right up - no problems! I may just run them all 4 seasons - they are that good! December 10, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by The best Michelin tire yet. I was glad to see that my Cadillac CTS had Michelin tires when I purchased it, otherwise I would have changed the tires. Being a performance car, I knew what the tires had to perform like. These tires did not disappoint me. My mileage on long trips would average over 28 MPG, in town 24 MPG. Stopping adhesion and wet weather driving were superior. The best part is that I just now put new Michelin tires on after getting 78,250 miles from the originals. If this second set gets the same amount of miles as the first, it will be time for a new car. December 8, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Love this tire! I just replaced the OEM tires on my GTI. These new Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 tires are better in every respect that matters to me. They might be a little noiser than the originals, and I have noticed a slight decrease in gas mileage, but these are small tradeoffs for the amazing wet road traction. Of course, some of the mileage decrease might just be because I am driving more enthusiastically, since the car is really more enjoyable to drive now. The car is much more composed over poor road surfaces, and I haven't been able to induce wheel hop, something that was easy with the old tires on a wet road. Great job, Michelin, you have a winner! December 8, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Awesome Ride!! I have had these tires for about a week now. They are on a 2012 Dodge Avenger. These tires offer great handling in wet weather, awesome dry handling. I can't really speak for snow just yet. I love the way they feel on the road. Great tire!! will definately be buying these again for my other car. December 2, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Smooth and quiet Immediately noticed the quietness and smooth ride. Time will tell how they wear but I average 60,000 miles a year, so it may not take long, based on the warranty. But I have seldom been disappointed with Michelin products. I've always worn my original equipment out but always replaced them with Michelin products. November 30, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by great tires I drive about 20,00 miles a year in all weather conditions. I replaced my old michelin MXM4 tires that served me well with these ones. I could tell the difference right away. The grip is amazing in dry and cold. Haven't tested them in the snow yet. November 19, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Significant Improvement Purchased the Pilot Sport A/S 3 for my Saab Aero Anniversary Editon convertible. Previous tires were not Michelin's and had cupping and the cord was being exposed. Researched many tire options and decided to go with the Michelin's. The first and most obvious difference was reduction of road noise followed by a very smooth ride. Traction on dry roads is as excellent as I expected from an ultra performance tire. Still waiting for some wet weather to test these tires otherwise my rating would be a solid 5. So far, very pleased with the purchase, driving is fun again. November 16, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Tire I have a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt SS/SC and I wanted to stay with the OE size, 215/45/18. I noticed these tires while doing my research online. The price was higher than what I wanted to pay but I wanted an all around tire that had good tread life, strong sidewall, and good wet traction. This tire seemed to top all test performed so I decided to purchase them. After only a few hundred miles on them I am very sure it will be worth the extra money spent. These tires are very smooth riding and balanced well. They respond very well to steering an braking. I can't wait for it to rain so I can try that out too. The installer told me that I bought the best all around tire on the market today for my car. I will follow up this review when I have more miles on them and when I get to use them in the rain. November 10, 2013
Rated 2 out of 5 by Noisy Tire I replaced the A/S pluses with A/S 3 and am shocked at how noisy they are on well traveled roads 60 MPH and above. They go back within the 30 day period. November 3, 2013
