Load Range

Safety Rating is a combination of two values: Load Index and Speed Rating for P-Metric and Euro Metric tire sizes; and Load Range and Speed Rating in the case of heavy duty LT (light truck) sizes.

Speed Rating is based on the speed that the tire is designed to be driven at for extended periods of time. All tires in the in the U.S. are designed to maintain legal U.S. speed limits. The speed rating of tires must match the maximum driving speed of the vehicle.

Load Index is used on P metric and Euro Metric sized tires and denotes a tire's load-carrying capacity at a specified inflation pressure. The load index is represented by a number, the higher the Load Index Value the greater the load the tire can safely carry. Vehicle manufacturers recommend a maximum load capacity based on a recommended minimum load index.

Tire Class

Tire Class reflects how the tire will be used. There are four major categories: All-Season, Max Performance, Summer-Only and Winter-Use.

All-Season tires are suitable for year-round driving in all weather conditions.

Summer-Only & Max Performance tires are specifically designed for high-performance driving. Tire compound, tread design and speed ratings all combine to hug the road and maintain grip. Summer tires by nature are not ideal for winter driving due to lack of siding to grip winter roads.

Winter-Use tires have tread compounds and patterns that are specially designed for grip on snowy or icy road surfaces. They are not suitable for year-round use. The rubber compound used will wear more quickly on dry, summer roads. It is recommended that winter tires are fitted as a complete set to avoid potential handling issues.

Tread Type

Tread Type is an important consideration when choosing a tire. There are four main types: Passenger, Highway, All-Terrain and Mud-Terrain.

Passenger denotes a tread that is suitable for normal use, a good all-round tread for normal driving.

Highway is a tread type unique to SUV and truck tires. The tread is optimized for normal everyday driving on paved surfaces. These tires can be driven off pavement, but are not ideally suited for off road traction. Highway tread patterns deliver a quiet ride.

For light trucks and specialty vehicles, All-Terrain tread types provide better off-road traction than standard highway truck tires. There more aggressive tread tends to be less quiet on paved roads. All Terrain tires are suitable for everyday use.

Mud-Terrain treads are specifically designed with wider tread blocks and higher void ratios to gain traction in off-road conditions. Mud Terrain tires can generate higher noise levels and tend to carry lower mileage warranties than other tread designs.

UTQG - Uniform Tire Quality Grade

UTQG (Uniform Tire Quality Grade) is made up of three values: treadwear, traction and temperature.

Treadwear is a relative numeric score, based on manufacturer tests, showing how well a tire can be expected to wear compared to other tires. A higher score means a tire could be expected to wear better.

Traction measures the tire's ability to stop a vehicle on wet roads. It doesn't reflect a tire's acceleration, cornering, or hydroplaning performance. Traction grades range from AA (highest) to C (lowest).

Temperature grades the tire's ability to withstand heat build-up, with A being the highest grade and C the lowest.

A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 to 115 mph
C - Between 85 to 100 mph
Treadwear: 500
Traction Asphalt - gForce
AA - Above 0.54
A - Above 0.47
B - Above 0.38
C - Less Than 0.38
A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 and 115 mph
C - Between 85 and 100 mph

Drive / Ride Performance Characteristics

All tires have the following six performance characteristics, divided into three sets of trade-offs. In most cases, a tire may perform excellently in one characteristic but only standard in the other.
Standard Ride Comfort & Standard Handling
Handling: Get stiff side wall for precise steering and cornering but settle for a firm ride with increased road noise.
Ride Comfort: Enjoy a quiet, smooth ride but lose some cornering ability.
Standard Treadwear & Standard Traction
Traction: Stop faster in wet conditions but expect a shorter tread life.
Treadwear: Get long, uniform wear across your tread pattern but expect less traction in wet conditions.
Standard Low Rolling Resistance & Standard High Speed Performance
High-Speed Performance: Get increased performance at higher speeds but sacrifice some fuel economy.
Low Rolling Resistance: Enjoy improved fuel efficiency but expect less high-speed cornering ability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by PHENOMINAL Quiet, Responsive, the best. My second set. Incredible performance. Great profile. Excellent in all weather.Quiet. April 20, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Replaced Run-Flats Replaced the run-flats on my BMW 135i with the A/S 3's two days ago. The car has been transformed. The tire is quiet, and has improved the ride quality and handling of the car. Assorted rattles and squeaks which drove me crazy from the first day with the car are now gone. Even my wife noticed the difference. I can not say enough good things about these tires. April 19, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Pilot a/s 3 These are great performance tires. Quiet ride and excellent wet and dry weather performance. Exellent price on the tires and coupled with the $70 rebate from Michelin provided a good value. Not cheap tires but worth it if you have a performance vehicle. April 17, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Initial Reactions Purchased set for daughter's Jetta Sportwagen 2.5 last month & was impressed. Just put a set on my Jetta TDI Sportwagen and am very impressed. Ride is much smoother than with OE tires, and it is quieter. Car now also corners much better--much better. Braking is superb! Will follow up after several thousand miles. April 16, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Wow! Replaced P-Zero P255/40ZR19s on a 2012 supercharged 3.0 Audi A6 with sports package. Much quieter and softer riding tire. Noise at 70mph measured 79dB with the P-Zero vs. 70dB with the Pilot Sport A/S 3. Wet traction is VERY impressive. Concerns over changing from a summer performance tire to M+S tire, were pleasantly surprising; this tire turns in very crisply with linear response. In all a great tire. March 28, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by I would buy these tires again. I have only had the tires for a couple of weeks, but I find them to be very quiet and they perform well - go where I point them and are grippy. I look forward to seeing how they wear. They were highly recommended by a consumer organization. March 27, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent in wet pavement The millage is better, the road noise is less. I drive the car in the city 90% of the time and where I Live rain a lot. Excellent in the rain. March 20, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great set of tires I had a set of these tires installed on my Mini 6 months ago. They have performed really great on dry pavement as well as on snow this past winter. I am very pleased and would purchase another set in the future. March 17, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Tire Replacing Pilot Sport A/S I drive a 2006 Mercedes E350 sedan. I had the old Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires on her and, I purchased the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3's, three weeks ago, and have put close to 2,000 miles on them. I got them at the right time because it started to rain here in Northern California, for several days and was able to drive through various wet weather road conditions, from pouring rain, to standing water on the freeway. These tires handled beautifully at speeds of 75 mph on the freeway (I like to drive fast). The contact on the wet road was superb, I had complete control. When the weather dried the stickiness of the tires are outstanding as you go around curves and the braking astounding. I must also add that these are extremely quieter compared to the Pilot Sport A/S, I am happy for that a noise reduction of at least 90% compared to the old tires, very noticeable. I would recommend these for any Mercedes owner. March 14, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Michelin Pilot A/S Tires These tires are great for spring, summer, fall.Theres no tire Id rather have other than this.I do not use my car during winter blizzards,& snow falls but rain doesn't impede the tread at all. They ride & handle great.Just another great tire from Michelin March 2, 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by Poor winter tire, great dry and wet tire These tires are very dangerous in winter. They are not an all season tire. With that being said, in dry and wet conditions they are very good. I would recommend going with a better all season tire like DWS or snow tires. February 27, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Tire Have put 2000 miles on them, they are great tires. Quiet and smooth riding. They hold well in the rain- as you know Mini's are quick turning cars and these tires hold the road. My dad recommended them after finding that Michelin made a lower cost tire that fits my car. I hope to get more than 29k miles which is what I got on the original supplied tires. February 11, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Awesome Just purchased my first set of tires for my 2013 Infiniti G37S (6MT) SEDAN. These tires handles great in wet pavement. Did really good during houston's two day winter ice storm that shut down the city( LOL ). Alot quieter compare to my O.E. tires ( RE050 ). It grips like a summer performance tire when going around sharp curveys at high speed. I drive 102 miles a day for work and i haul my mountain bike to near by trails 4 hr away on weekends. I drive aggressively and iam hard on the braking. Worth every penny. February 9, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Awesome A/S Tires I purchased these tires as replacement for the OEM Michelin Pilots on my 2012 Civic Si Coupe. The OEM's only had 12,000 miles but the lack of performance, especially in rain or snow, had me looking elsewhere. I had an '07 Si coupe with Conti DWS, which outperformed the OEM's on my '12, and did consider them, but am glad I opted for the AS/3's. The performance in snow over the past week has been exceptional, much better than the DWS and far superior to the OEM's. I had no trouble driving through 8.5" of wet snow on Monday, 4" of powder last week, and plowed through about 10" of snow / slush / ice encountered in various areas during my drive this morning. Dry performance is great, although not as good as the Pilot Exalto's which were OEM on my '07. Wet performance is very good, the tires are minimally phased by standing water. Note that my Si's both have limited slip differentials, which certainly contributes to performance during inclement weather. I now have approximately 3,500 miles on the AS/3's, and could not be more pleased with my purchase. February 4, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Awesome!!! Michelin has always been in the family and seeing how they came up with the Pilot Sport A/S 3's just made it better to stay with Michelin tires. I switched my RFT and I'm going on a couple of thousand miles now. So far the ride is 100 times better! I have a luxury car and I went from feeling like I was off roading to having a nice smooth ride. Curse those RFT! Luckily, my old RFT came with the car and I didn't spend twice I would of if I did get the RFT again. We do a lot of driving since family is far and coming home the ride is so smooth that when my family is asleep they don't even notice all the bumps and road noise. The new A/S 3s are a better ride, the handling is great, the road noise is not an issue anymore and I do save more gas than I did before. The look of the tires are great and the feel is what I was looking for. Overall, I would put the A/S 3s again once I'm up for new tires again unless they come up with A/S 4s which would be great. Thanks Michelin team! Keep up the good work! I love the new tires! January 28, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Saved my butt during ATL ice storm I have these tires on my Audi A8L and they performed very, very, well last night. 8 hours to get home no slippage. I passed a brand new 750i going up a steep incline and I never slipped. January 28, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Quality product for a reasonable price I bought these tires for my daily driver (2008 Subaru WRX). They work great for my needs. The Pilot A/S 3's are a great mix; they handle like a sport tire, but are higly durable. I've used these tires in rain/snow and they provide great traction. I have not had any problems thus far and really like the tire. I would recommend them to anyone who is looking for a great all season tire. January 27, 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by Decidedly NOT "All Season" Solid in dry conditions, very good in the rain, completely overmatched in even light snow conditions. A three-season tire with four-season branding. January 20, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Nice tires For average commuting/traveling tires seem to stick to road well. Tires suggested for cornering aspect and speed. Seem to live up to the suggestions. Very sastisfied. January 19, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Pilot Sport A/S 3 rated #1 in testing The Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3's are the best handling all season sport tires on the market. Autoweek magazine issues September 2nd, 2013 and issue September 16th, 2013 go into more detail on testing against other top performance summer tires and all-season tires. Autoweek advisors tested the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3's on a dry autocross course beating out top performance summer tires with more dry grip. The Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3's also tested quicker than competitive tires and the best for wet and dry braking distances. January 8, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Outstanding Grip These tires have fantastic dry grip; easily the most grippy all seasons I've had on a road car. In the wet they are more than sufficient for a daily driver. On snow these are perhaps the best non dedicated winter tire I've driven. And on ice these tires maintain enough grip to commute with confidence. Fuel economy took a slight hit on the highway compared to my previous tires. Ride noise is slightly higher now too, but well worth the trade in grip. Bottom line, I would stongly recommend these for any driving enthusiast looking for all seasons. January 5, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent Tires I've been using different brand of Tires on my 2011 Shelby GT500 and those were my third set. Those Tires were making annoying humming noise, and the ride was really rough even Ford mechanic thought there was a bearing issue with the car, but once I consulted another mechanic, he said the Tires were the issue. So I decided to go for Michelin's A/S Tires (19" for front - 20"s for the back) and I immediately noticed that the noise was completely gone and the ride is definitely improved. What I like also about those Michelin Tires is the 45,000 miles warranty comparing to the other brand of 20,000 miles warranty. Really, they are amazing Tires and I recommend them to anyone driving a Muscle car. GREAT Tires... Thank you January 2, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by A Great 3.5-Season Tire Replaced OEM summer tires on my BMW. I was looking for something with a longer tread life and better grip that the OEM run flats. I haven't had these for more than 500 miles so far, but already they out-perform the OEM summer tires even in the dry and stay very grippy in the wet and sub-freezing temperatures I've seen in Cleveland this December. They were only so-so in light snow though and I ended up going back to my usual winter setup for the next few months. I would not recommend the A/S 3 for use in snow, at least on a RWD car, but it is capable in a pinch if you're in an area that doesn't frequently see snow. Just expect to accelerate very slowly and breaking distances were much longer than dedicated winter tires. I'm looking forward to the longer tread life as both sets of my summer tires averaged 12,000 miles before they were worn out. January 1, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Tire I purchased these tires to replace the stock tires on my Ford Mustang GT. I like the grip, and how they hook up. Also, I originally wanted Michelin Super Sport tires, but they aren't made for the tire size of the Mustang GT. If I had a Porsche 911, Mercedes S-Class, or BMW 5-series I wouldn't have had a tire size problem. C'mon Michelin make me some Super Sports for the Mustang. Ford has sold millions of them, and that's alot of tires. December 31, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best Tires Ever These are the best tires I've ever had. The ride is smooth and quiet. My previous set were very expensive and No comparison. I will only buy Michelin from here on out. December 30, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Sign me up. I'm getting these again. These tires are great. Handling has been restored to my Mercedes C Class. The ride is smooth and quiet. Traction in the rain is excellent. This tire is a great match for Mercedes C Class. Only have about 3,000 miles on then but so far I am more than happy. December 30, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellant for BMW 135i We were looking for new high performance all-season tires and these were just right. We had original run-flats on our BMW 135i. These Pilot A/S 3's grip and handle the road well. They cushion your ride (especially well if you are used to the run-flats). What a difference these tires make. Obviously buy a can of fix a flat just in case you own this car because you have no spare and no run-flats anymore. We love the tires and would definitely recommend them. December 29, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Pilot Sport: Perfect for Saturn Roadster The new Pilot Sport A/S 3 tires were the perfect choice for my 2009 Saturn Sky roadster. I noticed the improved handling immediately. Purchased in late November, I am having no trouble navigating snow-covered winter roads. December 29, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Incredible handling I currently have the most humble of vehicles, a 2000 Saturn LW1 Wagon. It has gone through some personality changes, Koni Sport Struts, Carbotech custom Autocross brakes and now 17" rims wrapped in Michelin AS3 215-45/17 glory. These tires are on par with my 18" Pilot Sports that I had on my 96' Mustang and now my humble wagon grips, stops, handles like a dream. Better than my Mustang and my Z. If these tires can transform my ride into something fun.... Worth every penny. December 29, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Love These Tires.... Bought these tires for my Mercedes CL55 AMG. Been on several 400 mile plus road trips. Couldn't ask for a better. The handling cornering are superb.... Being a sport tire they ride a little harder than your avg. radials... But my hydraulic suspension smoothes it out ... Over all one of the best set of tires I have ever bought... I recommend them for any high performance car.... December 28, 2013
