Load Range

Safety Rating is a combination of two values: Load Index and Speed Rating for P-Metric and Euro Metric tire sizes; and Load Range and Speed Rating in the case of heavy duty LT (light truck) sizes.

Speed Rating is based on the speed that the tire is designed to be driven at for extended periods of time. All tires in the in the U.S. are designed to maintain legal U.S. speed limits. The speed rating of tires must match the maximum driving speed of the vehicle.

Load Index is used on P metric and Euro Metric sized tires and denotes a tire's load-carrying capacity at a specified inflation pressure. The load index is represented by a number, the higher the Load Index Value the greater the load the tire can safely carry. Vehicle manufacturers recommend a maximum load capacity based on a recommended minimum load index.

Tire Class

Tire Class reflects how the tire will be used. There are four major categories: All-Season, Max Performance, Summer-Only and Winter-Use.

All-Season tires are suitable for year-round driving in all weather conditions.

Summer-Only & Max Performance tires are specifically designed for high-performance driving. Tire compound, tread design and speed ratings all combine to hug the road and maintain grip. Summer tires by nature are not ideal for winter driving due to lack of siding to grip winter roads.

Winter-Use tires have tread compounds and patterns that are specially designed for grip on snowy or icy road surfaces. They are not suitable for year-round use. The rubber compound used will wear more quickly on dry, summer roads. It is recommended that winter tires are fitted as a complete set to avoid potential handling issues.

Tread Type

Tread Type is an important consideration when choosing a tire. There are four main types: Passenger, Highway, All-Terrain and Mud-Terrain.

Passenger denotes a tread that is suitable for normal use, a good all-round tread for normal driving.

Highway is a tread type unique to SUV and truck tires. The tread is optimized for normal everyday driving on paved surfaces. These tires can be driven off pavement, but are not ideally suited for off road traction. Highway tread patterns deliver a quiet ride.

For light trucks and specialty vehicles, All-Terrain tread types provide better off-road traction than standard highway truck tires. There more aggressive tread tends to be less quiet on paved roads. All Terrain tires are suitable for everyday use.

Mud-Terrain treads are specifically designed with wider tread blocks and higher void ratios to gain traction in off-road conditions. Mud Terrain tires can generate higher noise levels and tend to carry lower mileage warranties than other tread designs.

UTQG - Uniform Tire Quality Grade

UTQG (Uniform Tire Quality Grade) is made up of three values: treadwear, traction and temperature.

Treadwear is a relative numeric score, based on manufacturer tests, showing how well a tire can be expected to wear compared to other tires. A higher score means a tire could be expected to wear better.

Traction measures the tire's ability to stop a vehicle on wet roads. It doesn't reflect a tire's acceleration, cornering, or hydroplaning performance. Traction grades range from AA (highest) to C (lowest).

Temperature grades the tire's ability to withstand heat build-up, with A being the highest grade and C the lowest.

A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 to 115 mph
C - Between 85 to 100 mph
Treadwear: 500
Traction Asphalt - gForce
AA - Above 0.54
A - Above 0.47
B - Above 0.38
C - Less Than 0.38
A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 and 115 mph
C - Between 85 and 100 mph

Drive / Ride Performance Characteristics

All tires have the following six performance characteristics, divided into three sets of trade-offs. In most cases, a tire may perform excellently in one characteristic but only standard in the other.
Standard Ride Comfort & Standard Handling
Handling: Get stiff side wall for precise steering and cornering but settle for a firm ride with increased road noise.
Ride Comfort: Enjoy a quiet, smooth ride but lose some cornering ability.
Standard Treadwear & Standard Traction
Traction: Stop faster in wet conditions but expect a shorter tread life.
Treadwear: Get long, uniform wear across your tread pattern but expect less traction in wet conditions.
Standard Low Rolling Resistance & Standard High Speed Performance
High-Speed Performance: Get increased performance at higher speeds but sacrifice some fuel economy.
Low Rolling Resistance: Enjoy improved fuel efficiency but expect less high-speed cornering ability.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Louder than expected, worse gas mileage I had these tires installed on my Audi A6 4.2 and they are a lot noisier than the other tires I have had on this car. The gas mileage is also a lot worse than my previous Michelins. My cabin used to be super quiet and now I hear a loud buzzing noise coming from the front tires. November 10, 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by Wear and Noise Issues if you only have a few thousand miles on these tires you should wait to review; handling is as promised, sharp and great grip. Ride was rough from day one on my Infiniti g37X. Drove them through the winter and now have 23K miles. Wear on shoulder of all 4 is bad, and getting a wap wap sound from one tire. Rotated in Sept. and treadwear is significant. ALL tires should last more then 22K miles unless they're for racing. Extremely disappointed that they are so noisy, rough, and un-durable. Tire care was always performed when due and psi checked regularly. Some spirited driving (how much spirited driving can you do in the winter!) November 4, 2014
Rated 3 out of 5 by Not as good as summer tires When I switched from my OEM Michelin RTF to A/S tires, i was expecting smoother, quiter ride. However, overall quality of ride was not as good as the original tires. It was very noisy as well. Had trouble getting replacements within 30 days because of staggered wheel sizes on my BMW sports package and summer tires were out of production. I do not recommend these tires if you have a BMW 3 series with sports package. Heard good review about pilot sport summer tires. October 24, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Pilot Sport A/S3 Just bought two rear tires for my Lexus IS250. They are very quiet and have awesome grip. They hook up well in the rain as well. My front tires are another brand and now I can hear the noise coming from them compared to the Michelin. The Michelin's live up to their name as far as quiet and smooth ride. That is why they are number one in tires. I always buy Michelin when I can. October 20, 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by Won't Last to Mileage Estimate Bought Michilin Pilot Sport AS+ May 2012 with 45,000 mile warranty (235/50ZR18). Have driven 35,500 miles and purchse retailer now says I need new tires. Driving is around suburbs with no long road-trips and the car has been into purchase retailer 7 times for rotate/balance/align as required. Warranty appears to be much less than was represented by sales retailer at time of purchase. Product has lasted 21% less than the expected miles and yet the customer satisfaction credit is only11% of the purchase price of the new tires or 9% of the original tire price (sales retailer is recommending Michelin Pilot Sport A/S3 235/50R18 for my current replacement). I liked the way the car drove with these tires. Especially happy with snow performance as they handled well. But I am upset that the verbal warranty explanation was so much better on the sales end than the reality on the other side. It seems to me that the customer satisfaction discount on the new tires should be double what it is. October 12, 2014
Rated 3 out of 5 by noisy tire as the tire does everything it should, hnadle well, ride well, brakes well the tire after 1,000miles are very noisy and is very dissapointing to me. almost hate driving people in my BMW now cause they are so noisy September 23, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Very Good Tires/ Better Mileage / I just bought a set of 4 tires for a 2006 Civic SI. Before I had 4 Fuzions Tires. The Car came originally with Michelin (summer)tires, those lasted 95k miles !. After those, I bought a set of 4 Hangkook, then I bought a set of 4 Fuzion ( wich I wouldn't recommend to anyone. Now I am back and very happy with Michelin again. The difference on the ride is huge !, new tires, brand new, bought in Sept/14 I would recommend these tires to anyone. New shoes ;-) September 23, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by More than imagined. These tires are a little expensive but they are very quiet, extremely sticky and very smooth. Used to have a vibration but not with these tires. Went completely away. Definitely very happy and can't wait to see how many miles they last. Only put about a 1,000 miles on them so far. Very impressed. September 19, 2014
Rated 3 out of 5 by Great tire grip with Poor Fuel Economy I've had these AS3s for 6,000 miles and find them to be excellent with high grip in dry and wet condition and they have increased my handling substantially but have caused a 3-4 mpg drop in fuel economy. The fuel economy has destroyed my love of the rest of the tire's attributes. I'm trying to unload mine asap now. September 14, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by The Ultimate Driving Machine My husband selected these tires for my BMW 528i; I was reluctant at first because they were more expensive than other brands and as a woman I really didn't think tires made that much of a difference. I was so wrong! These tires are fabulous! MY BMW has truly become the ultimate driving machine with these tires on it. My husband was so impressed with them, that he's getting a set for his 2013 Nissan Maxima as soon as the Labor Day sale goes into effect! August 11, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Excellent, quiet tires Just got these a few days ago and I'm very happy with them. They are smooth and quiet, better I think than the original Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 that came with my Accord. They even cost less than the original tires. The treadware rating is 500 on the Pilot Sport AS 3 vs. 300 on the Pilot HX. I got over 80K miles on my original tires; so I'm hoping the Pilot Sport will last just as long or more. The reason I gave this a 4-star rating is because I don't know what the tread life will be like. On another note though, I've tried other name brands in the past and have been disappointed. Now I only use Michelin tires and have yet to be disappointed. Their tires just last a long time, provided you rotate regularly. August 10, 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by Extremely Noisey Tire Had the dealer put these tires on my 2012 Buick Regal GS after the stock summer performance tires had worn down. Pros: Great grip, good handling, and very nice on wet roads. Cons: SO NOISEY! I've got less than 4,000 miles on them and am going have the dealer take them back. I don't know if I got a bad batch, but I literally cannot stand to be inside my car @35 mph, @ 50 mph or @70 mph. I was hoping after the first couple hundred miles the noise would go away or at least subside, but alas, it has not. My wife refuses to ride in the car on long road trips because the growl/howl of these tires is annoying. I turn my radio up so loud in an attempt to drown out the noise. I am on the fence on whether or not I will get these replaced with another set of A/S 3's (assuming the 4 I got are a bad batch), or try something else. I've always known Michelin to be a great tire as my parents had them on the majority of the Cadillac's they owned without any issue. I gave the comfort portion a "Below Average" grade because riding in the car is far from comfortable. Hopefully the next set isn't as awful... July 30, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Fantastic Tires! Used these tires to replace my Nero Zero's on my 2009 Mazdaspeed3. The Michelin's are significantly better in all areas. They are much quieter, handling and turn-in is sharper, and overall ride quality is a vast improvement over the Nero's. I'm a very happy customer! July 5, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by great tire great tire. better then the original tires that came on my Maxima. One question though. Are these tires low profile July 1, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Amazing Grip, Low-noise, Gentle ride! Awesome ride! I replaced some worn Primacy MXM4 set with the Pilot Sport A/S 3 set. Love the cornering improvement! The ride is as smooth as the Primacy's when they were new, but I think that the grip in both wet and dry pavement is better. Love these tires! June 24, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Back to Michelins My new car came with other than Michelin tires. I tried to get them to change them but they would not. After driving for a month on my 'other than Michelin tires", I returned the car for a change to Michelin tires which at 80 years old, I have always had. What a difference!! Now my new car rides and handles as it should. What a joy. The performance by comparison is a world of difference and all due to my Michelin Pilot Sport A/S3 tires front and back. Thank you and buy this kind, you owe it to yourself to drive in the luxury of Michelin. June 22, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best tires, period! Just drove on my new Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 tires on my 2011 BMW 135i M-Sport. What a world of difference from the run flats that came on the car! The ride is superb, balance perfect, handling outstanding, etc. You simply can't beat Michelins! June 17, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Wow! What response! The steering response and feeling of safety were immediate as I drove away from installlation. The ride is smooth and handling is positive and comfortable. They really compliment the driving ability of my Infiniti G37X. Very pleased and highly recommend this product! June 12, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Wow, very impressed Just got these installed today and wow, I can really tell a difference. Purchased them for a 2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata Grand Touring and the ride is very smooth. It was raining when I left the tire store and these wide tires have plenty of rubber to grab the road. I really felt safe in the rain. I still can't get over how smooth the ride was. The A/S 3's are a must for a sports car. Very impressed! June 11, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by AWESOME TIRES ON CIVIC SI !!! Ditched the factory Michelin HX MXM4 tires after only 36k due to wear and dry rot. New Pilot Sport AS 3 tires are just AWESOME. Tremendous grip dry and in rain. Smooth and quiet. Really made the wife's Civic SI feel like a go cart. Hope to get 40k + miles on these tires. Almost went with Pilot Super Sports for ultimate grip and ride but the wife wanted all season tires even though this car gets stored during winter. June 10, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Good tire but gas mileage is now awful I have purchased many sets of Michelin tires for a number of cars. It's the only brand I buy. Purchased these tires in January 2014 after at least 3 calls to Michelin and one to where I bought the tires to try to narrow down the choices in the Michelin line. I was told that it was a good choice. I replaced the OEM tires on my 2011 Rav4. The Michelins handled well in various types of weather but I immediately noticed a 2 -4 drop in MPH. Thinking it might be the extreme cold weather and/or the winter fuel mix that gas stations use (I was told) ,I decided to wait a while for the weather to change. I would like to point out that I check the pressue in my tires once a week with an accurate guage and always keep the pressure at 32 which is what is recommended on the tire placard on the vehicle. My vehicle is is top running condition and I want to point out that the drop in MPG was immediate and still varies between 20-22 mpg from date of purchase until present. I used to get 22.5 to 25 mpg. I drive the very same roads that I used to. So even though these are good tires I have to caution that your mpg will take a hit. Not what I expected. June 10, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Very impressive Let me start by saying the ride I now get with my Dodge Challenger SRT8 is nothing short of fantastic. Smoothness is the name of the game and that is what I now have. I'm impressed by the technology that has gone into the development of these Pilot Sport A/S 3. Now if I only get the mileage that you all have rated the tire for, then I'll be extremely happy and ready for another set. May 27, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by AWSOME!!!!!!!!!! I purchased these tires for my wife's Honda fit, in a 205/40r17. they are quiet, RIDE INCREDIBLE, smooth and handle very well. Very surprised that such a wide tire on such a little car rides so well. May 13, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by You will feel the difference I always had Michelin tires on my cars except the latest models because the dealership would not propose them as a free option. I had to change some tires that dry rotted on my 2007 Solstice (Second Hand car bought to an old lady who kept it in a garage since she purchased it) and chose Michelin tires immediately to replace the damaged [edited other brand] ones. Michelin website is excellent to help you chose the best tires for your car. I just had to find a retailer which supported the promotion ($70 rebate) and here I am with brand new excellent tires. No problem on wet or oily roads, really good braking distance. Nice comfort on bumpy roads (for a small roadster...). I also went from 18.1 Mpg to 19.1Mpg with the same commute everyday. Happy with these tires, despite a steep pricing. May 12, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Use to run Michelin tires Back Now!! I have run Michelin tires before on my BMW's, thought that I would try other brands, boy did I get fooled, my M-3 drives the best it has in years, will always run Michelin tires I am sold. May 6, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by The Right Choice Replaced OEM AS which I thought were great tires @ 28,000 miles. The AS3's are head and shoulders above the factory installed tire. They're quiet, grip like crazy in the dry and wet and offer a firm but comfortable ride. I live in the Deep South so snow performance was not a requirement when I purchased these tires. For an MB E Class sedan these are probably the best tires available in the Ultra High Performance category for my driving style and conditions. Without a doubt they're worth every penny spent on them. May 1, 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by Not up to par I own a 2009 Bullitt Mustang and enjoy a spirited drive... read I do NOT thrash the car around. I purchased 4 new tires. For tires that claim to be "Ultra High Performance" in my opinion they are not even close. They feel like 6 year old tires. I wish I had more driving time within the first 30 days to return them. I did not... now I am stuck with them. If I had the money I would replace them now. For this car these tires do not live up to their name. Very disappointed. April 30, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great tire but noisey This is my third set of super sport tires on this car. They are very good however they are very noisy. Lots of tire noise April 28, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Update on the A/S 3 An update on my initial review. I had the chance today to take my 135i with the A/S 3's for an extended drive today. I drove a combination of highway, city and rural roads. I can not believe this is the same car. The ride and handling of the car is better than ever and appears to have further improved after getting a few miles on the tires. As I stated earlier, the car is now quiet and all the rattles and creaks that drove me nuts are now gone. My only regret is that this tire was not available when I first purchased the car and that I put up with the run-flats for two years. April 27, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC Last fall, I purchased a 2008 BMW 328i with a sport package and runflat tires. It drove great on flat, unbroken pavement, but you could feel every irregularity in the road. Yesterday, I replaced the runflat tires with Pilot Sport A/S 3's and the car now rides like a dream. Driving the car is now a pleasure! April 24, 2014
