Load Range

Safety Rating is a combination of two values: Load Index and Speed Rating for P-Metric and Euro Metric tire sizes; and Load Range and Speed Rating in the case of heavy duty LT (light truck) sizes.

Speed Rating is based on the speed that the tire is designed to be driven at for extended periods of time. All tires in the in the U.S. are designed to maintain legal U.S. speed limits. The speed rating of tires must match the maximum driving speed of the vehicle.

Load Index is used on P metric and Euro Metric sized tires and denotes a tire's load-carrying capacity at a specified inflation pressure. The load index is represented by a number, the higher the Load Index Value the greater the load the tire can safely carry. Vehicle manufacturers recommend a maximum load capacity based on a recommended minimum load index.

Tire Class

Tire Class reflects how the tire will be used. There are four major categories: All-Season, Max Performance, Summer-Only and Winter-Use.

All-Season tires are suitable for year-round driving in all weather conditions.

Summer-Only & Max Performance tires are specifically designed for high-performance driving. Tire compound, tread design and speed ratings all combine to hug the road and maintain grip. Summer tires by nature are not ideal for winter driving due to lack of siding to grip winter roads.

Winter-Use tires have tread compounds and patterns that are specially designed for grip on snowy or icy road surfaces. They are not suitable for year-round use. The rubber compound used will wear more quickly on dry, summer roads. It is recommended that winter tires are fitted as a complete set to avoid potential handling issues.

Tread Type

Tread Type is an important consideration when choosing a tire. There are four main types: Passenger, Highway, All-Terrain and Mud-Terrain.

Passenger denotes a tread that is suitable for normal use, a good all-round tread for normal driving.

Highway is a tread type unique to SUV and truck tires. The tread is optimized for normal everyday driving on paved surfaces. These tires can be driven off pavement, but are not ideally suited for off road traction. Highway tread patterns deliver a quiet ride.

For light trucks and specialty vehicles, All-Terrain tread types provide better off-road traction than standard highway truck tires. There more aggressive tread tends to be less quiet on paved roads. All Terrain tires are suitable for everyday use.

Mud-Terrain treads are specifically designed with wider tread blocks and higher void ratios to gain traction in off-road conditions. Mud Terrain tires can generate higher noise levels and tend to carry lower mileage warranties than other tread designs.

UTQG - Uniform Tire Quality Grade

UTQG (Uniform Tire Quality Grade) is made up of three values: treadwear, traction and temperature.

Treadwear is a relative numeric score, based on manufacturer tests, showing how well a tire can be expected to wear compared to other tires. A higher score means a tire could be expected to wear better.

Traction measures the tire's ability to stop a vehicle on wet roads. It doesn't reflect a tire's acceleration, cornering, or hydroplaning performance. Traction grades range from AA (highest) to C (lowest).

Temperature grades the tire's ability to withstand heat build-up, with A being the highest grade and C the lowest.

A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 to 115 mph
C - Between 85 to 100 mph
Treadwear: 500
Traction Asphalt - gForce
AA - Above 0.54
A - Above 0.47
B - Above 0.38
C - Less Than 0.38
A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 and 115 mph
C - Between 85 and 100 mph

Drive / Ride Performance Characteristics

All tires have the following six performance characteristics, divided into three sets of trade-offs. In most cases, a tire may perform excellently in one characteristic but only standard in the other.
Standard Ride Comfort & Standard Handling
Handling: Get stiff side wall for precise steering and cornering but settle for a firm ride with increased road noise.
Ride Comfort: Enjoy a quiet, smooth ride but lose some cornering ability.
Standard Treadwear & Standard Traction
Traction: Stop faster in wet conditions but expect a shorter tread life.
Treadwear: Get long, uniform wear across your tread pattern but expect less traction in wet conditions.
Standard Low Rolling Resistance & Standard High Speed Performance
High-Speed Performance: Get increased performance at higher speeds but sacrifice some fuel economy.
Low Rolling Resistance: Enjoy improved fuel efficiency but expect less high-speed cornering ability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Outstanding performance Great dry weather performance. Marginal wet weather performance. Overall the best performance of any brand! August 12, 2013

Rated 5 out of 5 by Best All-Season Tire I've Ever Owned I'm driving a 2007 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V, which is a decently sporty sedan in the compact range. I've had dedicated summer tires before, and two different all-season tires, including the original Pilot Sport A/S. I can honestly say that this tire is the best All-Season I've ever had, and so far, it's handling just as well as ANY of the summer tires I've used. They're quiet, comfortable, and extremely grippy. I've driven them in the rain several times already, and I have had to work fairly hard to break traction with them. It's almost scary how much control I have in the rain! And on dry ground, it feels like I'm driving on a super-sticky summer tire. I haven't even heard a chirp out of them, even on turns that would make my previous Pilot Sports sound quite loud. The braking also seems to be quite a bit stronger than my previous set. These tires are also NOT directional, like the previous Pilot Sport A/S series. As such, it also does not feel like I'm driving on a rail, ESPECIALLY in the rain. I cannot yet comment on tread-life, but they do seem to have a slight increase in MPG. However, I'll need quite a few more data points before I can say that there's a statistically significant increase in MPG, so I will try to update this review in the future. I honestly can't think of any negative comments to make on this tire, as of yet. If anything comes up, then I'll update this review, but so far I am extremely satisfied! August 12, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by These tires are on another level Waited for Sport Pilots A/S 3 235 55 18 100v Well worth the wait Great soft feel with all the grip and control needed Car was transformed These tires made a huge difference Braking, cornering and handling improved The straight line ride is luxury smooth No slip or hydroplane in rain My 06 Dodge Charger R/T never was better. Rated 5 out of 5 by "Exceptional performance tires" Performance cars, BMWs and the like, should be factory equipped with Michelin Pilot Sport tires. When investing in a high end product, you want the very best from the start. Car dealers equip according to bulk purchasing. Your performance car is inferior from the get go. So after purchase of your new vehicle, like myself, I would recommend an immediate change to Michelin Pilot Sports. Costly? Not when concidering remarkable handling, super rain performance, great wear characteristics, and increased safety from your investment. August 12, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by All Michelin Family I love Michelin tires. I have them on all the cars in the family, including a new used car for my daughter. A few times, I have tried other tires and regretted it and went back to Michelins. Today's high tech cars often require a great tire to function properly, like my Volvo and my Nissan Maxima do not drive as they were designed to drive on those lower grade tires, they just don't drive or wear well on other tires. I have always found that the Michelin design and warranty is always the best balance of value/safety/performance. August 12, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent responsive tire Well rounded responsive tire. Surprisingly quiet. August 12, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best Ever 2011 BMW 328i 4 Door with upgraded 18" with Sport Package Tires are just awesome! Have had on for 20k now, low noise, smooth ride, etc August 12, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Everything I'd expected, once again! The tires were bought to upgrade the overall performance of my 2010 Bentley Speed. The 'bespoke' tires have been surpassed technologically by the AS3's, and I wanted the added value of a tire that lasts, a nice change from competitors effots. Combine bad weather grip, great ride and superior ride and handling . . . how can you loose? I drive twisty, wet two lane roads every day and the security these tires deliver can be felt though the wheel; awsome! 40 years of experience with Michelin has always been good for me, make the change, you'll never regret it. Rated 5 out of 5 by So far..all the tire they're said to be! I have been a Michelin fan for some time and most recently replaced my MMX4 tires with newly released Pilot Sport A/S3. I was most concerned about having a quiet tire and these fit the bill! Beyond that they provide excellent traction and handle well on both dry and wet pavement. Hope they do as well in snow. Have logged just 1,500 miles to date. Highly recommend! August 12, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Pilot Sport A/S 3 Happiness Living in an area with some winter weather (snow and ice) I prefer an A/S tire vs a maximum performance tire. As usual, Michelin did not let me down. While I don't track the car I do drive fast. I recently was timed at 152 mph and the car felt stable and responsive. There was more speed left but I chickened out. Tires always felt stable, were reasonably quiet, and wear better than expected. Driving a 500 HP AMG, I expected to get about 10,000 miles out of the rears. I am now at 10,000 miles and I SAFELY have 5-10,000 miles left on them. August 12, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Tire I use these on my daily driver vehicle. This is my second set of these tires. I am glad that I switched from the OEM supplied tires to these Michelins. They are quieter and provide good traction. They made a noticeable improvement in ride quality as compared to the original tires. They lasted 65K miles, which is outstanding for a performance rated tire. August 12, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Satisfaction since 1968 I purchased my first set of Michelins for my 1968 MGB. Since then, there have been multiple sets for many different cars I have owned. I have always been very satisfied. Multiple times my car purchases have arrived with other manufacturers' tires. It is always a happy day for me when I install my first set of Michelins on that particular car. Keep up the good work! August 11, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Mini Corners with Pilot Sport A/S 3 I was looking for tires that could handle the Mini's cornering ability in all types of weather. After extensive research, I chose Michelin's Pilot Sport A/S 3. These were exactly the set of tires I was looking for. The ride is supurb and the handeling in the corners is amazing. As an added benefit, I found the stopping distance with the new Michelin's greatly improved. The MINI is an agressive driving machine and the Pilot Sport A/S 3 are up to the challenge. I would highly recommend them. August 10, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by LIKE WALKING BAREFOOT IN THE SAND Think hard about walking in high heeled boots on a cobblestone street. Now think about walking bare-footed in the wet sand at low tide---that's the feeling you get riding on the Michelin Sport AS3. August 10, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great tires seem to be wearing well They handle well, and grip well in wet weather. Plus they are not noisy as some brands are. August 9, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best Tires for Audi I have a 2006 Audi A3 3.2 Quatro S-line. I have used Conti Pros which was the tire the car came with. Since switching to the Michelins I notice a huge improvement in performance and handling, especially driving on wet/slick roads. I have a lot more confidence driving with these tires. Highly recommended. I hope these are offered on the new Audi S3 coming next year! August 7, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Upgrade Replaced oem grand touring tires from another manufacturer. These new uhp a/s tires are for my 2013 Audi S4. All the reviews and the NOLA tests are correct, these tires are amazing. Smoother rolling, tighter, firmer around corners, control handling braking. No Negatives. August 7, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by great value for money Great value for money tire. Relatively low noise and good mpg. August 7, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Handling and Comfort I have been a long time Michelin purchaser, but the company has out done themselves with the development of the A/S 3. The best thing I like about the Pilot Sport A/S 3 is the non-directional tread. The tires handle superbly and they provide a comfortable ride at the same time. The performance in the rain is second to none for a performance tire. Outstanding product. August 7, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by The only tire for my family Michelin tires have been my choice for our family of Honda & Acura vehicles. They are a safe tire. We have never had a blow out or tire problem of any sort. It gives you a comfortable feeling when traveling knowing that your tires are the last thing that you need to worry about. August 7, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Tires I recently purchased the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3. My experience with this newly released tire has been very positive. The handling, comfort, braking, and fuel efficiency have been excellent. I would highly recommended this tire. August 7, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Outstanding Performance Handling These tires handle beautifully under hot/dry as well as hot/wet conditions (and cold), can be pushed to the car's limit without problem, and have tread-life much longer than I would have expected for such a performance tire. Although not great in snow, they can do it, even with a rear drive sports car, on the banged-up US freeways! Comfort is the best I have had in a performance tire, by far. August 7, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Luv um so far Just put the pilot sport a/s 3 on our Camry. Took a 600 mile road trip. Great ride and response. Had some rain and the tires were very safe feeling August 7, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Nice looking tire Use these as summer tires only. They wear very well. They are nosier than my winter tires, also the dealer I bought them from used nitrogen, when I check my air pressure and have to add air I do not have nitrogen. I was told that is O.K. but seems no one knows for sure. Also had a flat so I have three tires with nitrogen and one with out, is this O.K.? August 7, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Smooth n quiet Finally got a set of these on my C6 to replace the worn out oem tires. I took actual decibel level readings with the old tires and with the new A/S 3's and found average noise level dropped 5-9 decibels on the same roadway and same speed. Definitely a smoother ride as well. Traction in heavy rain is incredible. I wish this new Pilot Sport A/S3 had been out last year . July 27, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Like butta Remember when Mike Meyers would parody his mother-in-law on SNL? She was a radio personality named Linda Richman and her show was "Coffee Talk". Anyways, when something was smooth beyond belief, Linda (Meyers) would describe it as, "like butta....." (ie. like butter). Well, sorry for the lengthy build-up to my comment, but that describles these tires perfectly. They are indeed, "like butta!" I won't bore you with a lot of techno-speak, I'll just say treat yourself to a set of the finest tires that you are ever likely to own! They are worth every penny of the cost and you will think that you are driving the brand-new car of your dreams! July 2, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Worth the wait! Amazing tire. After 3 long months my PS AS3 arrived today. All I can say is what a tire! I put these on my S5 and can't believe the grip, and ride. I previously ran a competitors summer tire but had to sacrifice the poor tread life for grip . After reading the reviews from the testing in New Orleans, I opted to make the change for a long life performance tire. I have only had these one day but I am sold! Way to go Michelin! June 23, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Very impressed with the A/S 3 I have been extremely happy with the Pilot Sport A/S 3 since I put them on my Audi A4 Avant. Right away, the PSAS 3 was quieter than my previous all-season tire, and the wagon was more fun to drive. Even though the PSAS3 is an all-season tire, we have been driving in winter conditions and have been impressed by how well the car stops. Just the other day, I had to come to a hard stop from about 45 mph to avoid an accident, and was further impressed by how cleanly the PSAS 3 stopped on a wet road - the car did not slide or shake at all. I feel safer driving on these tires. Not only is the family car more fun, but it also feels safer. Bonus -- we are getting about 2-3 mpg better fuel economy! I would definitely recommend this tire to my friends. January 16, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Change tire, change the car Changing to the MPSAS3 made our already great car even better. I felt an improved connection to the road. Yes it was stiffer but not in a way that was more uncomfortable but rather it was like upgrading the dampers on the car to the "sport" version. Braking was improved in both wet and dry and the handling was very rewarding. The car goes where I point it and it is predictable even in the snow/ice mix. This is an All Season and does not compare to a full ice and snow tire but it is by far the best All Season I have been on. I am extremely pleased with the tire. January 15, 2013
