Load Range

Safety Rating is a combination of two values: Load Index and Speed Rating for P-Metric and Euro Metric tire sizes; and Load Range and Speed Rating in the case of heavy duty LT (light truck) sizes.

Speed Rating is based on the speed that the tire is designed to be driven at for extended periods of time. All tires in the in the U.S. are designed to maintain legal U.S. speed limits. The speed rating of tires must match the maximum driving speed of the vehicle.

Load Index is used on P metric and Euro Metric sized tires and denotes a tire's load-carrying capacity at a specified inflation pressure. The load index is represented by a number, the higher the Load Index Value the greater the load the tire can safely carry. Vehicle manufacturers recommend a maximum load capacity based on a recommended minimum load index.

Tire Class

Tire Class reflects how the tire will be used. There are four major categories: All-Season, Max Performance, Summer-Only and Winter-Use.

All-Season tires are suitable for year-round driving in all weather conditions.

Summer-Only & Max Performance tires are specifically designed for high-performance driving. Tire compound, tread design and speed ratings all combine to hug the road and maintain grip. Summer tires by nature are not ideal for winter driving due to lack of siding to grip winter roads.

Winter-Use tires have tread compounds and patterns that are specially designed for grip on snowy or icy road surfaces. They are not suitable for year-round use. The rubber compound used will wear more quickly on dry, summer roads. It is recommended that winter tires are fitted as a complete set to avoid potential handling issues.

Tread Type

Tread Type is an important consideration when choosing a tire. There are four main types: Passenger, Highway, All-Terrain and Mud-Terrain.

Passenger denotes a tread that is suitable for normal use, a good all-round tread for normal driving.

Highway is a tread type unique to SUV and truck tires. The tread is optimized for normal everyday driving on paved surfaces. These tires can be driven off pavement, but are not ideally suited for off road traction. Highway tread patterns deliver a quiet ride.

For light trucks and specialty vehicles, All-Terrain tread types provide better off-road traction than standard highway truck tires. There more aggressive tread tends to be less quiet on paved roads. All Terrain tires are suitable for everyday use.

Mud-Terrain treads are specifically designed with wider tread blocks and higher void ratios to gain traction in off-road conditions. Mud Terrain tires can generate higher noise levels and tend to carry lower mileage warranties than other tread designs.

UTQG - Uniform Tire Quality Grade

UTQG (Uniform Tire Quality Grade) is made up of three values: treadwear, traction and temperature.

Treadwear is a relative numeric score, based on manufacturer tests, showing how well a tire can be expected to wear compared to other tires. A higher score means a tire could be expected to wear better.

Traction measures the tire's ability to stop a vehicle on wet roads. It doesn't reflect a tire's acceleration, cornering, or hydroplaning performance. Traction grades range from AA (highest) to C (lowest).

Temperature grades the tire's ability to withstand heat build-up, with A being the highest grade and C the lowest.

A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 to 115 mph
C - Between 85 to 100 mph
Treadwear: 500
Traction Asphalt - gForce
AA - Above 0.54
A - Above 0.47
B - Above 0.38
C - Less Than 0.38
A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 and 115 mph
C - Between 85 and 100 mph

Drive / Ride Performance Characteristics

All tires have the following six performance characteristics, divided into three sets of trade-offs. In most cases, a tire may perform excellently in one characteristic but only standard in the other.
Standard Ride Comfort & Standard Handling
Handling: Get stiff side wall for precise steering and cornering but settle for a firm ride with increased road noise.
Ride Comfort: Enjoy a quiet, smooth ride but lose some cornering ability.
Standard Treadwear & Standard Traction
Traction: Stop faster in wet conditions but expect a shorter tread life.
Treadwear: Get long, uniform wear across your tread pattern but expect less traction in wet conditions.
Standard Low Rolling Resistance & Standard High Speed Performance
High-Speed Performance: Get increased performance at higher speeds but sacrifice some fuel economy.
Low Rolling Resistance: Enjoy improved fuel efficiency but expect less high-speed cornering ability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Pilot Sport A/S 3 great first impression Had 225x50 R18 Pilot Sport A/S 3's fitted to my Infiniti G35XS two months ago. Great improvement over the OEM tires - very responsive in dry conditions, sure footed in the wet with a smooth and quiet ride also. Price was very reasonable compared with competitive tires in this size. Definitely happy with my purchase so far - we'll see how they perform when the snow arrives. October 31, 2013
Rated 3 out of 5 by Great performance, but at a price I own a 2006 Lexus GS430 with 18s, 245/40/18. 95% of my miles are highway miles. I had been running Pilot Sport A/S Plus for the past few years. I had about 45,000 miles on the tires, so it was time to replace them. The natural choice was the new Pilot Sport A/S 3. I've had the new tires on the car for about 10 days and 500 miles, and here are my observations. The handling is excellent. Cornering, steering response/feel and road feel are all great. The great handling, however, comes at a price. Whereas the ride of the A/S Plus was firm yet compliant and forgiving, I find the ride of the A/S 3 overly firm, borderline harsh. Also, the A/S 3 seems to be much louder on the highway than the A/S Plus tires I replaced (which, like I said, had 45k miles on them when I took them off). I have the tires filled to 32 psi (just like my previous tires), so it's not the pressure. I think it might have something to do with the load rating. The load rating on the A/S 3 is 97y. The load rating on the A/S Plus was 93. I'm not a tire expert/aficionado by any means, but I'm wondering whether the increased load rating could make that much of a difference or whether the increased noise/harshness is due to something else. I am still within the 30-day return window, but I'm not sure what other options I have (other than going back to the A/S Plus, which, based on everything I've read, would seem to be a step in the wrong direction). In sum, while the A/S 3 really do make the car handle like it's on rails, in my opinion, they are not as comfortable or quiet as the A/S Plus I replaced. I'm sure many others made the switch from the A/S Plus to the A/S 3, and I'm wondering whether any one else has experienced the same thing. October 28, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Got a GREAT Tire The AS 3 was recommended by my tire dealer and I'm glad I took his advise. Two days after installation left for 12 day trip to Ohio from NJ. Drive, drive, drive. Great tire on dry and wet roads, highway and/or local traffic and speeds. Gripped like a Tiger, loved them. October 25, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Choice for sport sedan drivers I had read reviews of the back to back comparisons that Michelin did in identical cars late last year with these tires and those of competitors-the reviews. I had to wait for over a month after ordering the tires as they were just being released-I'm happy to report that the wait was totally worth it. These tires have a great balance of comfort (low noise, and smooth) combined with excellent feedback and cornering grip in all conditions. My friend asked if I was even going to put snow tires on this year-not sure I will go that far but may delay just to see how these do. I've already recommended these to several other people, I am very pleased and the treadwear durability expected should outshine the prior competitor tires that were on my BMW 335d M-Sport. Rated 5 out of 5 by Best tires Ever 225/50/17 The new Michelin Sport AS/3 Tires are the best tires I have had....they are refined, sharp and precise in handling and performance. They do exactly what you want and expect with no slopiness or drama...I love them! October 22, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Love these tires so far! Smooth smooth ride, great looking tire as well, dressed up my Audi nicely and made the car and ride feel like brand new again. Now I can delay buying a new car, I feel like I have one because of these tires! Thanks Michelin! October 18, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by WONDERFUL TIRE I've been a daily drive of C 6 Corvettes since 2004 driving on non Michelin run flats and just changed to the new Pilot Sport A/S 3 and absolute love them, as my wife says. Great handling and like riding on a cloud, no more jaring bumps. I should have changed 3 sets ago. October 14, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Good, but some concerns/issues Awesome tire in terms of cornering and braking, and they are UNBELIEVABLE in the rain - hopeful they perform as well in Minnesota winters. My primary issue with the tires are that they grab every imperfection in the roadway and track so the amount of steering correction isn't always fun to manage. I also had to have them re-balanced and still have some minor vibration through the steering wheel and chassis. The retailer advises the balancing was only off by 1/4 oz on one wheel and slightly more on another and run-out was well within spec, but I still am annoyed by the vibration since the previous OEM tires rode so well. I sure hope they smooth out or it will be a love/hate relationship to 45,000 miles. October 11, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great alternative to run flats on BMW Switched from original run flats on my BMW Series 3 sport coupe to these new A/S 3 Pilots. I had read many positive reviews and find these tires live up to all the accolades. Quiet and smooth with incredible grip and performance. Love 'em! It's like having a "better" BMW! October 4, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by it lives up to the name pilot i bought these tires for for my 04 mitsubishi , and these tires brought new life in my car , the car has better handling in dry or wet weather , the braking is so much better then any tire i've bought. and is so much more quite then the last pair of tires i had . Rated 3 out of 5 by Nice Tiore bad mileage This is a great tire and rides very smooth. You can feel the traction just tooling along. I expect this from Michellin, the only brand of tires I buy. What I did not expect was for the new tires to eat up gas mileage. A Lot. I normally get 210 to 220 miles on a half tank of gas. With the A/S 3 I am lucky to get 160 on that half tank. Love the feel of the tire but it has to go back. Will go back to the Exalto A/S. What a shame. September 1, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by 225/50ZR18 95W B I had bought a set 4 Michelin tire for SUV couples years ago, it run very good and now I bought this set of 4 tires of Mihelin Pilot spt as 3 for others car. In my whole life time I always buy Michelin tires for all the car I have had in the past. I always ask question and get answer from those who knows tires, Michelin tires is a trust, I hope you keep making better and better tires in the years to come. August 31, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by It's like riding on a cloud! I purchased a 2005 Crossfire from an auction almost 4 years ago. It had sluggish handling and a rough ride. I was concerned about the right front tire and thought it was brake issue. However, when my mechanic checked, he called and said "It's the tires." He recommended the Pilot Sport A/S 3. I thought I was driving a brand new car. The handling was superb, the road noise was minimal and it was like driving on cloud. I love the tires and would buy another set if needed. August 16, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Love my Pilot A/S 3's! Noticed the improvement these new tires made over my old tires immediately! Love the way they handle & hug the road. I feel that I'm in safe hands under any road conditions with my Pilot A/S 3's; I highly recommend them. August 15, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by I would buy this product again and again I have owned several corvettes and the first thing I change is the tires to run flat pilot sports. The car handles much better but the reason I buy them is for the quiet ride! I can actually talk to the passenger with the radio on! This is the BEST tire made!!!! August 15, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5by Better wet than I thought Tires on 2013 Focus. Tires have done well during this summers rain storms. August 15, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by PS AS3 I recently bought a set of pilot sport AS 3 and had them installed on my heavily modified eclipse turbo. They performed beyond my expectation, especially for an all season tire. The grip in extreme conditions is amazing, are very quite and resist hydroplaning very well. Who would have imagined your brakes work better with a tire selection, wow! You can drive with confidence and feel sure footed with these tires. An Ultrahigh performance tire with manners and a great warranty as a bonus. August 14, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Redefining Comfort/Handling at 182,000k At 182,000k miles these tires have redefined the meaning of "rides like a new car, without compromise" August 14, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Awesome Tire Awesome Tire! Great on water and excellent on handling corners. August 14, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great all around performance tire All of my cars have Michelin tires because I will not settle for less. The A/S 3s had just come out when I bought them. I put them on my E-class to replace my old MXM4s. They are quiet, and handle great. At high speed on the freeway, the car is extremely stable. It hasn't rained in San Diego recently so I can't comment on wet traction. But since it normally doesn't rain here, I'm not too concerned. August 13, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great tire looks good good gas miles August 13, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by First impressions First Impressions. Just purchased 4 Pilot A/S 3's for my '06 Corvette, Immediately noticed the harshness of the ride was gone, how much more quite the interior was. True I only drove 50 miles on county roads and no interstates. Will see how things go in a couple of thousand miles. August 13, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Michelin Pilot Tires The best tires I've ever had. I'll stick with Michelin from now on. August 13, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Michelin Tire performance shocked me! My first exposure to Michelin tires was on my 1969 Volvo 144. I replaced the original tires with Michelin "X". The difference in tire performance was almost unbelievable, and I have been a believer in Michelin ever since! thank you Michelin. August 12, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by great very quiet running, track well and no problems August 12, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by These tires really stick to the road! These tires always grip the road. They give you a very secure feeling even in hard rain. They don't slip in fast acceleration. And they look good! My only wish is that they were quieter on the road. But the other attributes are more important. I love how they look on the car. August 12, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Awesome tire Awesome tire that replaced OEM run flats on my BMW Z4. Car rides better, handles better, and is MUCH quieter. Awesome tire that I would definitely purchase again. August 12, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by An Exceptional Choice!!!! I just recently purchased a 2004 BMW 330Ci and the tires are one of the first things I always replace. It's been only a month since the replacement, so not much I can really say except, immediately I noticed a quieter ride, little to no road noise inside the car. The handling is nice but I haven't really stress tested the tires because of the short amount of time I have owned the tires, thus the 4-Star rating, which I'm sure will be upgraded once I've had more time with the tires. I have always preferred Michelin tires for all my cars since 1988 and it seems this tradition will continue. August 12, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Very quiet and smooth ride I replaced the factory installed tires with these Michelin tires and have been very pleased. I have a Mercedes E350 and handling and a quiet ride were qualities I wanted in a new tire. These tires exceeding my expectations. A smooth, quiet and great handling ride are all achieved. My wife's car is a Mercedes C300 Sport. When her tires were in need of replacing we went into a local tire store and was told by the salesman that another popular tire was the best tire for performance. We bought the tire and I can't tell you how disappointed we are with the tires. The handling is very good but the trade off in road noise isn't acceptable. I will buy the Michelin tires as soon as I can justify the replacement. The Michelin's cost is justified with the engineering that has gone into this product. These tires provide the driver the safety, performance, and a smooth/quiet ride that Michelin's reputation and marketing is built on. There is truth in Michelin's advertising that I would speak for.
