Load Range

Safety Rating is a combination of two values: Load Index and Speed Rating for P-Metric and Euro Metric tire sizes; and Load Range and Speed Rating in the case of heavy duty LT (light truck) sizes.

Speed Rating is based on the speed that the tire is designed to be driven at for extended periods of time. All tires in the in the U.S. are designed to maintain legal U.S. speed limits. The speed rating of tires must match the maximum driving speed of the vehicle.

Load Index is used on P metric and Euro Metric sized tires and denotes a tire's load-carrying capacity at a specified inflation pressure. The load index is represented by a number, the higher the Load Index Value the greater the load the tire can safely carry. Vehicle manufacturers recommend a maximum load capacity based on a recommended minimum load index.

Tire Class

Tire Class reflects how the tire will be used. There are four major categories: All-Season, Max Performance, Summer-Only and Winter-Use.

All-Season tires are suitable for year-round driving in all weather conditions.

Summer-Only & Max Performance tires are specifically designed for high-performance driving. Tire compound, tread design and speed ratings all combine to hug the road and maintain grip. Summer tires by nature are not ideal for winter driving due to lack of siding to grip winter roads.

Winter-Use tires have tread compounds and patterns that are specially designed for grip on snowy or icy road surfaces. They are not suitable for year-round use. The rubber compound used will wear more quickly on dry, summer roads. It is recommended that winter tires are fitted as a complete set to avoid potential handling issues.

Tread Type

Tread Type is an important consideration when choosing a tire. There are four main types: Passenger, Highway, All-Terrain and Mud-Terrain.

Passenger denotes a tread that is suitable for normal use, a good all-round tread for normal driving.

Highway is a tread type unique to SUV and truck tires. The tread is optimized for normal everyday driving on paved surfaces. These tires can be driven off pavement, but are not ideally suited for off road traction. Highway tread patterns deliver a quiet ride.

For light trucks and specialty vehicles, All-Terrain tread types provide better off-road traction than standard highway truck tires. There more aggressive tread tends to be less quiet on paved roads. All Terrain tires are suitable for everyday use.

Mud-Terrain treads are specifically designed with wider tread blocks and higher void ratios to gain traction in off-road conditions. Mud Terrain tires can generate higher noise levels and tend to carry lower mileage warranties than other tread designs.

UTQG - Uniform Tire Quality Grade

UTQG (Uniform Tire Quality Grade) is made up of three values: treadwear, traction and temperature.

Treadwear is a relative numeric score, based on manufacturer tests, showing how well a tire can be expected to wear compared to other tires. A higher score means a tire could be expected to wear better.

Traction measures the tire's ability to stop a vehicle on wet roads. It doesn't reflect a tire's acceleration, cornering, or hydroplaning performance. Traction grades range from AA (highest) to C (lowest).

Temperature grades the tire's ability to withstand heat build-up, with A being the highest grade and C the lowest.

A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 to 115 mph
C - Between 85 to 100 mph
Treadwear: 440
Traction Asphalt - gForce
AA - Above 0.54
A - Above 0.47
B - Above 0.38
C - Less Than 0.38
A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 and 115 mph
C - Between 85 and 100 mph

Drive / Ride Performance Characteristics

All tires have the following six performance characteristics, divided into three sets of trade-offs. In most cases, a tire may perform excellently in one characteristic but only standard in the other.
Excellent Ride Comfort & Excellent Handling
Handling: Get stiff side wall for precise steering and cornering but settle for a firm ride with increased road noise.
Ride Comfort: Enjoy a quiet, smooth ride but lose some cornering ability.
Standard Treadwear & Excellent Traction
Traction: Stop faster in wet conditions but expect a shorter tread life.
Treadwear: Get long, uniform wear across your tread pattern but expect less traction in wet conditions.
Excellent LowRolling Resistance & Excellent High Speed Performance
High-Speed Performance: Get increased performance at higher speeds but sacrifice some fuel economy.
Low Rolling Resistance: Enjoy improved fuel efficiency but expect less high-speed cornering ability.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Exceptional urban driving tires... If your tires have to roll on metro area urban roads and streets, you know they are a nightmare...potholes, nails, screws, short stops, melting blacktop, rain, ice, hail, bumper to bumper traffic. Even people that drive like they are in a video game! This MXV4 Plus tire is a nice match for it all...quiet tread pattern, good overall value and very sticky under nearly all conditions. On dry pavement, they turn a winding parkway into driving fun. You won't be sorry for choosing them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Micheiln The Only Tire To BUY My wife was the perfect person to gauge how tires make a difference, she new nothing about a car, she would keep a certain for 8 to 10 years she hated to get a new car. AT about 50% of wear I would always put a New set on Michelin on her car without telling her and it never failed, she would come home and tell me that for some reason her car stop, handle better and the ride was smoother, this is a lady who never said a thing about the car as long as it started and run, it took a change like Michelin for her to mention anything about her car........Michael Lyles

Rated 5 out of 5 by from There is a difference!!! Having never equipped any of my previous vehicles with Michelin tires, I was quite pleased to feel the noticeable difference in both my cars with the MXV4's installed. Rough rides gone, road noise reduced, winter traction much improved; the benefits went on and on...I have learned that my "bargain hunting" for tires in past years, may have not been any bargain at all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Durable, long wear I drive 50,000 miles per year for my job, so its important to consider a safe, durable tire. My '94 Volvo 850T has 550,000 miles on it and all have been with Michelin tires. The last two sets of MXV4s each lasted over 70,000 miles. You get what yopu pay for. All my cars (4x) have Michelins. How do you show your family you love them? Michelins.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You want this tire on your vehicle This is a solid, dependable and great riding tire. While Michelin's aren't the most inexpensive tire, you do get what you pay for. I could feel the difference in my vehicle's handling, braking and ride compared to the 5 year old Energy tires I had upgraded and worn down. I will only use these tires on my vehicle.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Performance, Quality and Longevity Last year I replaced our old Michelin tires on our 2008 Honda Accord. There were 58,000 miles on the tires and they showed little evidence of wear. The service writer at the Honda dealership advised they would easily go another 10,000 miles without any problems. We live in the Las Vegas Valley where we experience very hot summers and difficult driving conditions. I was very pleased with the tires. I replaced them with an exact copy of the original tires from Michelin. We now have 70,000 miles on our Honda. My wife drives 22 miles to work each day, and I feel good knowing that she has excellent tires on the car and will not get stuck on the side of the freeway. I like the Michelin product because it stands for integrity.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from MXV4 Plus - Wears Well / Looks Good these tires were the second set / first replacement of the original tires on my 1999 Mercedes-Benz s320 sedan. have less than 10000 miles on them but are already over 5 years old and show no cracking and don't seem to have developed any hard spots although admittedly, this heavy car sits most of the time. my local michelin dealer tells me i should probably replace them due to age but admits he's impressed with the way they have worn and the way they still look.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing MXV4's Searching for a great All Season tire with excellent dry and wet weather traction ,the Michelin Energy MXV4 Plus is by far the best I have used. Twice emergency stops to avoid children and a SUV these tires still ride smooth. 2 1/2 years old and 30,000 on them and still look new. Arizona heat can't effect this tire. It wears incredibly well, Highly recommend it , If your looking for Safety, Quietness and a Smooth ride this tire is for you. I have a luxury sedan and will buy another set as soon as these wear out...if and when they do. Thank You Michelin for building a superior tire.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tire I used this model of tire for my Lexus for the last 20 years, and I never have any problem with the tires. It costed a little more but it last much longer with out any air leak.
Date published: 2013-08-09
Rated 4 out of 5 by from My experience says to buy Michelin only When properly rotated and balanced with air level checks every 5,000 miles (or close) this tire will give more miles than rated. I now have 60,000 on this tire and have maybe 10,000 more to go. After about 45,000 miles the tires have a roar, but I just turn up the radio, because there is nothing wrong with the tire and I want a few more miles out of the tires. I would suggest you buy your tires close to home so that you can balance, rotate and check the air often. If you find you have a dealer that does it for free after the purchase its even better. Now when I buy a new car I make sure the tires are Michelin or I will not buy it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great tires I have driven this new tires for approximately 1000 miles and must say they are everything the Michelin web sites advertise them to be, quite, efficient and hopefully will last and surpass the full 60000 miles warranty. I could not be more pleased.
