SERVICE DESCRIPTION

Safety Rating is a combination of two values: Load Index and Speed Rating for P-Metric and Euro Metric tire sizes; and Load Range and Speed Rating in the case of heavy duty LT (light truck) sizes.

Speed Rating is based on the speed that the tire is designed to be driven at for extended periods of time. All tires in the in the U.S. are designed to maintain legal U.S. speed limits. The speed rating of tires must match the maximum driving speed of the vehicle.

Load Index is used on P metric and Euro Metric sized tires and denotes a tire's load-carrying capacity at a specified inflation pressure. The load index is represented by a number, the higher the Load Index Value the greater the load the tire can safely carry. Vehicle manufacturers recommend a maximum load capacity based on a recommended minimum load index.

Tire Class

TIRE CLASS

Tire Class reflects how the tire will be used. There are four major categories: All-Season, Max Performance, Summer-Only and Winter-Use.

All-Season tires are suitable for year-round driving in all weather conditions.

Summer-Only & Max Performance tires are specifically designed for high-performance driving. Tire compound, tread design and speed ratings all combine to hug the road and maintain grip. Summer tires by nature are not ideal for winter driving due to lack of siding to grip winter roads.

Winter-Use tires have tread compounds and patterns that are specially designed for grip on snowy or icy road surfaces. They are not suitable for year-round use. The rubber compound used will wear more quickly on dry, summer roads. It is recommended that winter tires are fitted as a complete set to avoid potential handling issues.

Tread Type

TREAD TYPE

Tread Type is an important consideration when choosing a tire. There are four main types: Passenger, Highway, All-Terrain and Mud-Terrain.

Passenger denotes a tread that is suitable for normal use, a good all-round tread for normal driving.

Highway is a tread type unique to SUV and truck tires. The tread is optimized for normal everyday driving on paved surfaces. These tires can be driven off pavement, but are not ideally suited for off road traction. Highway tread patterns deliver a quiet ride.

For light trucks and specialty vehicles, All-Terrain tread types provide better off-road traction than standard highway truck tires. There more aggressive tread tends to be less quiet on paved roads. All Terrain tires are suitable for everyday use.

Mud-Terrain treads are specifically designed with wider tread blocks and higher void ratios to gain traction in off-road conditions. Mud Terrain tires can generate higher noise levels and tend to carry lower mileage warranties than other tread designs.

UTQG

UTQG - Uniform Tire Quality Grade

UTQG (Uniform Tire Quality Grade) is made up of three values: treadwear, traction and temperature.

Treadwear is a relative numeric score, based on manufacturer tests, showing how well a tire can be expected to wear compared to other tires. A higher score means a tire could be expected to wear better.

Traction measures the tire's ability to stop a vehicle on wet roads. It doesn't reflect a tire's acceleration, cornering, or hydroplaning performance. Traction grades range from AA (highest) to C (lowest).

Temperature grades the tire's ability to withstand heat build-up, with A being the highest grade and C the lowest.

A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 to 115 mph
C - Between 85 to 100 mph
Treadwear: 500
Traction Asphalt - gForce
AA - Above 0.54
A - Above 0.47
B - Above 0.38
C - Less Than 0.38
Temperature
Grades:
A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 and 115 mph
C - Between 85 and 100 mph

Drive / Ride Performance Characteristics

All tires have the following six performance characteristics, divided into three sets of trade-offs. In most cases, a tire may perform excellently in one characteristic but only standard in the other.
Standard Ride Comfort & Standard Handling
Handling: Get stiff side wall for precise steering and cornering but settle for a firm ride with increased road noise.
Ride Comfort: Enjoy a quiet, smooth ride but lose some cornering ability.
Standard Treadwear & Standard Traction
Traction: Stop faster in wet conditions but expect a shorter tread life.
Treadwear: Get long, uniform wear across your tread pattern but expect less traction in wet conditions.
Standard Low Rolling Resistance & Standard High Speed Performance
High-Speed Performance: Get increased performance at higher speeds but sacrifice some fuel economy.
Low Rolling Resistance: Enjoy improved fuel efficiency but expect less high-speed cornering ability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Good mileage, traction and wear Some time ago I wrote Michelin and said I would not buy Michelin tires again until they made them last as they used to last. I honored that pledge. Then I bought a new Ford Mustang that had Michelin Energy tires on it. I decided I would wear them out and move on to another brand. They were said to be good for 55,000 miles so I expected to get 25,000 out of them. Well, yesterday I had new Michelin tires installed on my Mustang after the Energy tires were nearing their life cycle at 75,000 miles. Thank you Michelin, a lost customer has returned to your once again fine product. P.S. I have now put a set of Michelin on my daughters car May 28, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Performed as advertised These came OEM on my 2006 Honda Odyssey. The car is 10 years old and has 50K miles on it, only because I'm a snowbird and the car sat in the garage all winter for six months each year. I probably could squeeze another 5K, but the sidewalls are showing signs of cracking, so now it's time to replace and I am considering Defenders instead. The handling and ride quality with these tires has been excellent and I hope the Defenders are at least equal to these. I hope that road noise on the Defenders doesn't increase. April 12, 2016
Rated 1 out of 5 by 225/65R17 101S These tires came on my 2006 Highlander. Replaced them at the dealership several times. Never got anywhere close to 50,000 miles on any set. My last set was installed by Toyota in September 2014. The dealer just informed me that I need to replace them! Tires rotated every 5000 miles and on record by the dealer. I got less than 28.000 miles on these tires and the dealer told me to complain to Michelin! I refuse to buy these very expensive tires anymore. How about some warranty help for a change Michelin? Rated 1 out of 5 by Very expensive tires and installation The 235-710R460A 104T Runflat Michelin tires are very very expensive tires to purchase and have high installation charges. Installation charges are about 40% of the tire price. Also no one other than dealer has ability to replace the tires. I have old odyssey and the replacement of tires is costing me too much. Not sure why Honda/Michelin choose to go for non-standard tire size and installation process. June 1, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great on my Town Car Has been a very fine tire that came on my 2008 Town Car. Now have over 40K miles with more to go. Great in heavy rain and on the Hwy. I always come back to Michelin --- balance great ---never any problems. I do wish Michelin would make more of their brands with the white stripe like these ---- they look SO great on the car !! I now also have a Lincoln MKX SUV with 22" tires and hope Michelin will soon make this size. May 31, 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by Disappointed I have used Michelin on a 2005 Highlander. I retired from field work shortly after I replaced the first set of tires at about 40,000 miles. The second set I purchased from my car dealer. (The size was for 225/65R17.) Every 5000 miles the tires are rotated by the dealer. I took the car in today and they informed me that all the tires have dry rot and all need to be replaced! I don't drive as much as I did before retirement and have about 28,000 miles on the 5 year old tires. Is there some kind of limit by age of tires? The car is never parked on grass or gravel and is driven about 10 or more miles daily. April 10, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by so far great product my last tires were so noisey, these are quit I drive to 50 miles everyday the ride is great February 26, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Michelin is the BEST The last two years have been traumatic for me in the winter months. The tires that came on my new vehicle did nothing for me in the snow. Getting new tires this year, and I insisted on Michelin, was the best thing I could have done. The car runs better, no problems with slipping and sliding. It is nice to be able to trust the tires to get me wherever I am going. On my last vehicle, it came with Michelin tires and I replaced the tires with Michelin. Needless to say, I AM EXTREMELY HAPPY WITH Michelin and I highly recommend them. Thank you for such a good product. January 17, 2014
