Load Range

Safety Rating is a combination of two values: Load Index and Speed Rating for P-Metric and Euro Metric tire sizes; and Load Range and Speed Rating in the case of heavy duty LT (light truck) sizes.

Speed Rating is based on the speed that the tire is designed to be driven at for extended periods of time. All tires in the in the U.S. are designed to maintain legal U.S. speed limits. The speed rating of tires must match the maximum driving speed of the vehicle.

Load Index is used on P metric and Euro Metric sized tires and denotes a tire's load-carrying capacity at a specified inflation pressure. The load index is represented by a number, the higher the Load Index Value the greater the load the tire can safely carry. Vehicle manufacturers recommend a maximum load capacity based on a recommended minimum load index.

Tire Class

Tire Class reflects how the tire will be used. There are four major categories: All-Season, Max Performance, Summer-Only and Winter-Use.

All-Season tires are suitable for year-round driving in all weather conditions.

Summer-Only & Max Performance tires are specifically designed for high-performance driving. Tire compound, tread design and speed ratings all combine to hug the road and maintain grip. Summer tires by nature are not ideal for winter driving due to lack of siding to grip winter roads.

Winter-Use tires have tread compounds and patterns that are specially designed for grip on snowy or icy road surfaces. They are not suitable for year-round use. The rubber compound used will wear more quickly on dry, summer roads. It is recommended that winter tires are fitted as a complete set to avoid potential handling issues.

Tread Type

Tread Type is an important consideration when choosing a tire. There are four main types: Passenger, Highway, All-Terrain and Mud-Terrain.

Passenger denotes a tread that is suitable for normal use, a good all-round tread for normal driving.

Highway is a tread type unique to SUV and truck tires. The tread is optimized for normal everyday driving on paved surfaces. These tires can be driven off pavement, but are not ideally suited for off road traction. Highway tread patterns deliver a quiet ride.

For light trucks and specialty vehicles, All-Terrain tread types provide better off-road traction than standard highway truck tires. There more aggressive tread tends to be less quiet on paved roads. All Terrain tires are suitable for everyday use.

Mud-Terrain treads are specifically designed with wider tread blocks and higher void ratios to gain traction in off-road conditions. Mud Terrain tires can generate higher noise levels and tend to carry lower mileage warranties than other tread designs.

UTQG - Uniform Tire Quality Grade

UTQG (Uniform Tire Quality Grade) is made up of three values: treadwear, traction and temperature.

Treadwear is a relative numeric score, based on manufacturer tests, showing how well a tire can be expected to wear compared to other tires. A higher score means a tire could be expected to wear better.

Traction measures the tire's ability to stop a vehicle on wet roads. It doesn't reflect a tire's acceleration, cornering, or hydroplaning performance. Traction grades range from AA (highest) to C (lowest).

Temperature grades the tire's ability to withstand heat build-up, with A being the highest grade and C the lowest.

A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 to 115 mph
C - Between 85 to 100 mph
Treadwear: 400
Traction Asphalt - gForce
AA - Above 0.54
A - Above 0.47
B - Above 0.38
C - Less Than 0.38
A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 and 115 mph
C - Between 85 and 100 mph

Drive / Ride Performance Characteristics

All tires have the following six performance characteristics, divided into three sets of trade-offs. In most cases, a tire may perform excellently in one characteristic but only standard in the other.
Standard Ride Comfort & Standard Handling
Handling: Get stiff side wall for precise steering and cornering but settle for a firm ride with increased road noise.
Ride Comfort: Enjoy a quiet, smooth ride but lose some cornering ability.
Standard Treadwear & Standard Traction
Traction: Stop faster in wet conditions but expect a shorter tread life.
Treadwear: Get long, uniform wear across your tread pattern but expect less traction in wet conditions.
Standard Low Rolling Resistance & Standard High Speed Performance
High-Speed Performance: Get increased performance at higher speeds but sacrifice some fuel economy.
Low Rolling Resistance: Enjoy improved fuel efficiency but expect less high-speed cornering ability.

Michelin Energy Saver XL is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 570.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible tire I got this tire because it was made to improve gas mileage on hybrids by 8%. It did exactly that. I have 85,000 miles on it and expect to get maybe 5,000 more (note: I am religious about balance and rotation, alignment and tire pressure). I commute around 25 miles one way and it is mostly freeway miles. It handles as good as original tires which only lasted 48,000 miles. Road noise is an issue with the 2007 Prius anyway, so I do not attribute it to the tires. This tire did not decrease the road noise from the original equipment. I really can't say anything negative about this tire. When these finally wear out I will buy another set of this exact tire or the newer version! Buy it, you'll like it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Where the rubber meets the road" I am very pleased with my Michelin Energy Saver tires. They come with a fabulous guarantee as well! They handle well on wet as well as dry roads. I changed them out for snow tires in the winter, so I don't know how they do in the snow. I have a light car, a Mitsubishi Spyder Eclipse. I was having handling issues with my previous tires--those handling problems dissolved with my Michelins. I haven't seen an increase in my gas mileage, but I am very happy with the handling.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tire that do not ReTire As we all know, Michelin is supposed to make the best tires & I guess it does that.. The tires are smooth & very nice in handling / braking, even on a bit high speeds. After one year of installation, the threads are still very good !!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I have bought Michelin's for 25 Years I worked for a major retailer for 33 years. After trying many brands, i have stuck with Michelin's for their quality and longevity. For my last 15 years in retail i was a road warrior, traveled thousands of miles and they were great for wear and for my confidence that they kept me safe. Today i am a real estate agent and i drive clients around all the time and i feel safe i am protecting them the best i can.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Confort, Handling, Fuel Miser Although my first set of these tires, they are comfortable, quiet, but handle beautifully on a large sporty-sedan in dry and wet weather on difficult turf (that is, bad roads), the car loaded and unloaded alike. Energy-use appears to be excellent so far. Braking is excellent. They were stock on the car, but I will replace them with the same when necessary!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Customer Service Earlier this year I had an unfortunate incident on the Turnpike. My tires were compromised and I was having difficulties with the dealer where they were purchased. I contacted Michelin online and they responded immediately. The customer service representative took charge and handled everything for me. I was offered the Defender tires but chose the Energy Saver A/S as I have a hybrid vehicle. I am very pleased with my tires. The ride is smooth and the car stays steady in rain storms. I travel a lot and the tire helps me get better gas mileage. I was also very pleased that a consumer magazine rated them #1 for hybrids. I am very pleased with my tires and the excellent customer service.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great high mileage tire This is a great tire. I drive mountain roads daily with a commute of 135 miles round trip. I can burn thru tires like an indy car driver...60k tires usually last about 25-30k. My Prius, only lost about 4-5mpg average since putting these tires on. I nearly have 10k miles one them and they look like new. They handle great and are pretty quiet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product This tire at first glance looked like it will grip the road good, It dose, I drove though heavy rain for 2 hours, where could only see one car in front of me on free way, this tire did not hidro plane or loose traction, on black top the ride is smooth, and after 2500 miles I do not see any ware on tread. Only thing I do not like about the tire is that auto dealer did not supply a spare tire, so if it were not Michelin I would be purchasing a spare tire, I know when I get 60000 miles will be replacing them just for not wanting to be stranded.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I never think about my tires The only time I think about the tires on my Pius V is every 5000 miles. They are quite on the highway, take rough roads smoothly, and handle well on curves and breaking. They seem to make some contribution to my gas mileage which averages around 44MPG. I live in Tucson, AZ, where the summers and pavement are HOT. No problem. Tires? What, me worry?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 20000 mile review I bought these energy saving A/S for 2011 CRV. These tires ride comfortably. The tread wear is between 7/32 and 8/32 at 20000 miles. I should get close to the 65,000 mile guarantee. The gas mileage is not great on the interstate. I get about 25 mpg+/-. I drive the speed limit plus 5 mph+ over. If I stayed at the posted speed limit, I could do better. I will wear this set out, but I will certainly consider the defender the next time. The energy saver a/s 225/65/17 only has a 100 T rating. This was the only tire available in Michelin, when I bought them in February 2012. The defender comes with the 102 T rating and a 90000 mile warranty. The price differential is not that much more between the two tires, so both will be considered at the next tire purchase. Overall great tire. I have had the tires rotated every 6, 000 miles and have had the alignment checked twice a year.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Will buy again! Due to better control. I had never purchased Michelin tires before. We have had quieter road noise and much better driving stability on dry and wet roads. Due to computer on the car we were constantly needing to fill up with air, and when we bought the Michelin tires we changed to the nitrogen fill. No more red lights of "low tire pressure". I plan only to purchase Michelin tires from now on if financially feasible.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Grat Tire In Wet Weather First set of Michelin Tires ever after 30 years of driving was always worried that the cost was too high for the value, boy I was wrong, why did I wait so long. Ride is great for an old car and handles great in wet weather.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Motor Home Tire Excellence I purchased six Michelin tires for my motor home prior to my trip from Florida to Alaska this year. I experienced farenheight temperatures ranging from 85 degrees to the low 20's as well as gravel, rocky, pothole heavy and frostheave roadways for at least several thousand miles overall. Many others on similar routes have experienced serious tire failures. I can honestly report that my Michelin's have held up wonderfully and I am extremely pleased I purchased them, even though at the time I did not need to replace my tires.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Tires Ever! These tires were purchased as replacements for the originals on my hybrid. I was looking for tires with low rolling resistance to increase/maintain gas mileage and I needed the tires to be reliable as well. After a good bit of research I chose the Michelin Energy Saver A/S tires. So far, I have been very happy with them. I have not had a single issue and my gas mileage has increased a bit over the original tires. The tires actually increased the handling and performance of the car and after 20,000+ miles, I don't see much wear at all. I would recommend them to everyone and plan to replace them with same tires if possible when the time comes to do so.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great tire, great ride, great wear Original tires from the car manufacturer provided my Hyundai Genesis with a hard and noisy ride. The Michelin tires were recommended by my auto mechanic and it was the difference between night and day. The car rides quietly, drives and handles better and the noise level has been drastically reduced. Would recommend the tires to anyone without any reservations.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Reliable tires I use these tires on my primary vehicle. I have had no trouble out of these tires, and I expect them to last a long time. I have had good performance out of Michelin tires in the past and expect the same from my current tires. In the interest of full disclosure, I am writing this review in order to be entered in a contest. Nevertheless, my comments are truthful.
