Load Range

Safety Rating is a combination of two values: Load Index and Speed Rating for P-Metric and Euro Metric tire sizes; and Load Range and Speed Rating in the case of heavy duty LT (light truck) sizes.

Speed Rating is based on the speed that the tire is designed to be driven at for extended periods of time. All tires in the in the U.S. are designed to maintain legal U.S. speed limits. The speed rating of tires must match the maximum driving speed of the vehicle.

Load Index is used on P metric and Euro Metric sized tires and denotes a tire's load-carrying capacity at a specified inflation pressure. The load index is represented by a number, the higher the Load Index Value the greater the load the tire can safely carry. Vehicle manufacturers recommend a maximum load capacity based on a recommended minimum load index.

Tire Class

Tire Class reflects how the tire will be used. There are four major categories: All-Season, Max Performance, Summer-Only and Winter-Use.

All-Season tires are suitable for year-round driving in all weather conditions.

Summer-Only & Max Performance tires are specifically designed for high-performance driving. Tire compound, tread design and speed ratings all combine to hug the road and maintain grip. Summer tires by nature are not ideal for winter driving due to lack of siding to grip winter roads.

Winter-Use tires have tread compounds and patterns that are specially designed for grip on snowy or icy road surfaces. They are not suitable for year-round use. The rubber compound used will wear more quickly on dry, summer roads. It is recommended that winter tires are fitted as a complete set to avoid potential handling issues.

Tread Type

Tread Type is an important consideration when choosing a tire. There are four main types: Passenger, Highway, All-Terrain and Mud-Terrain.

Passenger denotes a tread that is suitable for normal use, a good all-round tread for normal driving.

Highway is a tread type unique to SUV and truck tires. The tread is optimized for normal everyday driving on paved surfaces. These tires can be driven off pavement, but are not ideally suited for off road traction. Highway tread patterns deliver a quiet ride.

For light trucks and specialty vehicles, All-Terrain tread types provide better off-road traction than standard highway truck tires. There more aggressive tread tends to be less quiet on paved roads. All Terrain tires are suitable for everyday use.

Mud-Terrain treads are specifically designed with wider tread blocks and higher void ratios to gain traction in off-road conditions. Mud Terrain tires can generate higher noise levels and tend to carry lower mileage warranties than other tread designs.

UTQG - Uniform Tire Quality Grade

UTQG (Uniform Tire Quality Grade) is made up of three values: treadwear, traction and temperature.

Treadwear is a relative numeric score, based on manufacturer tests, showing how well a tire can be expected to wear compared to other tires. A higher score means a tire could be expected to wear better.

Traction measures the tire's ability to stop a vehicle on wet roads. It doesn't reflect a tire's acceleration, cornering, or hydroplaning performance. Traction grades range from AA (highest) to C (lowest).

Temperature grades the tire's ability to withstand heat build-up, with A being the highest grade and C the lowest.

A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 to 115 mph
C - Between 85 to 100 mph
Treadwear: 820
Traction Asphalt - gForce
AA - Above 0.54
A - Above 0.47
B - Above 0.38
C - Less Than 0.38
A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 and 115 mph
C - Between 85 and 100 mph

Drive / Ride Performance Characteristics

All tires have the following six performance characteristics, divided into three sets of trade-offs. In most cases, a tire may perform excellently in one characteristic but only standard in the other.
Standard Ride Comfort & Standard Handling
Handling: Get stiff side wall for precise steering and cornering but settle for a firm ride with increased road noise.
Ride Comfort: Enjoy a quiet, smooth ride but lose some cornering ability.
Standard Treadwear & Standard Traction
Traction: Stop faster in wet conditions but expect a shorter tread life.
Treadwear: Get long, uniform wear across your tread pattern but expect less traction in wet conditions.
Standard Low Rolling Resistance & Standard High Speed Performance
High-Speed Performance: Get increased performance at higher speeds but sacrifice some fuel economy.
Low Rolling Resistance: Enjoy improved fuel efficiency but expect less high-speed cornering ability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Clearly the only tire to buy This is one the nicest tires I have ever put on my 2005 Honda Civic or any car for that matter. There is no road noise, they handle great, great in the rain, still waiting on the first snow.Hands down I would buy them all over again, awesome tire. When you buy Michelins you definetely get what you pay for an excellent tire. September 15, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by installed on my 2007 Chrysler T/C Van This is my second set of Michelins on my 2007 Chrysler T/C Mini Van. The first set had over 63 miles on it there was still a little live left in those tires but I do a lot of long distance highway driving and won't take a chance of a tire failure. I need good to excellent rubber on my mini van. I cruise at 80 MPH and can't afford a tire failure. I had nitrogen installed on both sets and I have my tires rotated every second oil change. I seen and investigate enough accidents caused by cheap worn out tires that it doesn't pay. My life and my loved ones deserve the very best and so do yours. Spend a little more and get the best. I use Michelins on all my vehicles. I can't say anything bad about Michelin tires. September 15, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Love my Defender Tires - Pontiac GP I've had my tires for 2 month now and I both them for a trip across florida to Miami and it rained the during my whole trip. Tires have great traction and I felt safe, they took turns well and really gripped the road. Noise level was fine, handling was great, breaking WOW, car in fron of me did a quick stop on the higway and the tires did their job, back of my car swerve a bit from the abrupt stop, but tires really held and kept me straight. So so far I'm extremely happy with these tires, looking forward to getting 90,000 miles out of them, really deep grooves. September 9, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Love'em Great sounding and riding tires, that I am very pleased with the Defender. September 9, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by this is the first set that I have owned have them on a 2008 dodge avenger ( show car ) so far everything about them are great September 7, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by I would buy this product again and again that a good idea September 7, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Smooth and Comfortable Ride I noticed a very smooth and quiet ride right after tires were installed and one month later the Defender is still quit and smooth. On a rainy day I went through a water puddle and could not believe, the steering wheel didn't move and the car tracked great. No hydroplaining. Superior tire and it does all the information on the tire says it does. I find no problems with the tire other than gas mileage, and I am only talking tenths of a mpg. Great job Michelin. Thanks, Smooth Rider JT September 7, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5by Love the Defenders I bought the Defenders before I drove cross country this summer and found that they were the best tires that I have had for a long time. The handling and ride were excellent. I had no problem with the rain and I noticed a significant improvement in braking distance. September 6, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Immediate Improvement I had no idea how bad my old tires were. I did some homework on these tires. I liked what I read and decided to give them a try. As soo as I drove away from the tire center, I noticed an immediate improvement in handeling, ride, response...everything. I am eager to see how they will improve my mileage. Awesome tires! Rated 5 out of 5 by The best tire on the road! I did a lot of research and found out the Defender was the very best tire on the road today! I have made one trip so far and we are making the same trip again soon! We are confident we are safe with the Defender and know we will not have any trouble with them and look forward to making many such trips up to the 90,000 miles they are advertized for. Thansk for the BEST TIRES on the market! September 6, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Good tires Had the tires for about a month now and ran into some unseasonal raining weather on a few recent trips. The Defenders felt secure, but to tell you the truth, I did not push them to the limit. The reason for the good rating was a sidewall mishap when I clipped a curb. Although it was a pretty good hit at a relatively sharp angle, I was please to see that the sidewall of the tire took no damage. If you have a minivan, tires are everything! They affect how the van rides and handles. They need to be tough to handle curb clipping when the kids are hungry and the wife is pointing in 2 directions at the same time. My advice is to go with the Michelin Defenders. To me they have proven to be worth the little extra money... September 6, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Lower MPG with Defenders I went from Hydroedge tires that at 62,000 miles had a steel belt coming through the tread and 28mpg, to the Defenders, which ride nice but cut the MPG on my 2010 Subaru Forester to 22, so a 5 mpg or a little more off the gas mileage. This was after an alignment and everything is set perfectly. I love my Michelins, but dang, they will cost a lot more in the long run. September 6, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Very quiet When new, these tires feel like you're riding on rails. They are extremely quiet on a minivan, which tends to sccentuate noise which reverberates inside the vehicle. I had one panic stop already when someone pulled out in front of me. They preformed extremely well. I would purchase these tires again and recommend them to others. September 5, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by i have always gone for the best so far so good. i just purchased the set last week September 5, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Long wear and Quiet Original tires on car not so good made loud road noise after only 28,000 miles and 5 rotations. New tire should be better and car runs like new with NO road noise. Michelin did what was right and gave me a large discount on the new tires. I would say they are a great company and buy their tires again. September 5, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best tire I've had from anyone Tires were stright and round meaning that they could be balanced an ride smooth, extremely quite tire, very good traction, thanks Michelin! September 5, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by nice ride- defender These tires are great, I had bought another brand of tire and the ride was Terrible, the dealer suggested the Defender at $15 more per tire,it was worth it. The ride is quiet, smooth & handles great.I would recommend these to anybody looking for tires September 5, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Pleased tire purchaser I am most pleased with the purchase of the Defender tires for my 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis. I noticed a smoother ride and better gas mileage. I feel safe that these tires can stop some 30 feet sooner. September 5, 2012
Rated 3 out of 5 by Not sure if I would do this again. I have lost two miles per gallon since installing these tires. I thought that I would get better milage and do not understand what happened. They do ride smooth, and are quiet, but I miss getting the milage that I was getting prior to installing them. I check my milage at every fill up and have for years and this is the first time I have lost milage with a tire that is suppose to help. September 5, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by riding on Air I haven't bought Michilins for about 25-30 years, I'm glad I bought Defenders cause it the smothess ride I've had in years September 5, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by terrific tires very quite,great handling,smooth September 5, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by I noticed the difference immediately Replaced OEM Michelins with Defenders. I noticed the difference driving out of the shop. My wife also noticed a huge difference the first time she drove it. I liked the old ones (Energy), but wore out at 50K miles. Hopefully these will do better, but very pleased after a week. September 5, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great quality - Highly recommend Installed 2 months ago on my Sienna 2005 Mini Van. These tires are replacing the second set of tires on this vehicle, also Michelin. Have nothing bad to say about these tires. As advertised, they are a quite running tire. They have excellent handling performance. They feel sure when braking. Performs well on dry and rain, the winter will be the real test but I feel confident that I will not be disappointed. Yes, these are a better grade of tire, costing a little more but they are well worth the extra money. I would HIGHLY recommend these tires to anyone, feeling certain that they will not be disappointed. September 5, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best tires I've owned After much consideration, I stepped up and bought these 90 K tires for our Honda Odessey with 150 K on the van. I really can't believe how much better the van handles and how much less road noise we have. These are great tires that I'd recommend to anyone that is considering spending a few more dollars for MUCH better tires!! September 4, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Never drive without them I was waiting 3 months for those tires. Finally, my Civic Hybrid has best "shoes" I could possibly have. Drive is comfortable, handles perfectly and I would suggest to never settle for less than Michelin. August 27, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Sold on Michelin Recently bought a set of Michelin Defenders for my 2006 Honda Odyssey. I have had the tires for about 3 weeks and have about 1,000 miles on them. So far so good. I always buy Michelin because they have always worked well. My Odyssey is so big and heavey that it never quite gets the expected life out of tires and brakes. The 90,000 mile warranty is what got my attention. I hope it proves to be true. I marked all ratings excellent but do not know about the wear-life and mileage yet. I am going on Michelin's claim. The first 2 sets of tires only lasted around 45,000 miles and were also Michelin but did not have this type of wear-life. August 27, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Defender Tires Excellent tires, quietest and best ride I ever had and I love the 90,000 mile warranty too as its the last tires I will need to purchase for my Dodge Grand Caravan. August 24, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Chevy Impala Defender Tires I purchased the Defenders tires for my 2009 Chevy Impala. Can't believe how much of a smooth and quite ride I am getting with these tires. I went to buy these tires based on all the info and reviews regarding them and the tire company talked me into something different. Should have listened to myself and bought them right away but within 3 weeks of driving the other tire I had them order the Defenders and change them. Best decision I made. What a difference!! August 22, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Immediate improvement The tires were mounted on my 2009 Ford Fusion and I immediately noticed an improvement in the ride and handling. I only have a few hundred miles on the tires so I can't attest to the claim of increased gasoline mileage, but I am very pleased with the tires and Michelin as a company. August 21, 2012
