Load Range

Safety Rating is a combination of two values: Load Index and Speed Rating for P-Metric and Euro Metric tire sizes; and Load Range and Speed Rating in the case of heavy duty LT (light truck) sizes.

Speed Rating is based on the speed that the tire is designed to be driven at for extended periods of time. All tires in the in the U.S. are designed to maintain legal U.S. speed limits. The speed rating of tires must match the maximum driving speed of the vehicle.

Load Index is used on P metric and Euro Metric sized tires and denotes a tire's load-carrying capacity at a specified inflation pressure. The load index is represented by a number, the higher the Load Index Value the greater the load the tire can safely carry. Vehicle manufacturers recommend a maximum load capacity based on a recommended minimum load index.

Tire Class

Tire Class reflects how the tire will be used. There are four major categories: All-Season, Max Performance, Summer-Only and Winter-Use.

All-Season tires are suitable for year-round driving in all weather conditions.

Summer-Only & Max Performance tires are specifically designed for high-performance driving. Tire compound, tread design and speed ratings all combine to hug the road and maintain grip. Summer tires by nature are not ideal for winter driving due to lack of siding to grip winter roads.

Winter-Use tires have tread compounds and patterns that are specially designed for grip on snowy or icy road surfaces. They are not suitable for year-round use. The rubber compound used will wear more quickly on dry, summer roads. It is recommended that winter tires are fitted as a complete set to avoid potential handling issues.

Tread Type

Tread Type is an important consideration when choosing a tire. There are four main types: Passenger, Highway, All-Terrain and Mud-Terrain.

Passenger denotes a tread that is suitable for normal use, a good all-round tread for normal driving.

Highway is a tread type unique to SUV and truck tires. The tread is optimized for normal everyday driving on paved surfaces. These tires can be driven off pavement, but are not ideally suited for off road traction. Highway tread patterns deliver a quiet ride.

For light trucks and specialty vehicles, All-Terrain tread types provide better off-road traction than standard highway truck tires. There more aggressive tread tends to be less quiet on paved roads. All Terrain tires are suitable for everyday use.

Mud-Terrain treads are specifically designed with wider tread blocks and higher void ratios to gain traction in off-road conditions. Mud Terrain tires can generate higher noise levels and tend to carry lower mileage warranties than other tread designs.

UTQG - Uniform Tire Quality Grade

UTQG (Uniform Tire Quality Grade) is made up of three values: treadwear, traction and temperature.

Treadwear is a relative numeric score, based on manufacturer tests, showing how well a tire can be expected to wear compared to other tires. A higher score means a tire could be expected to wear better.

Traction measures the tire's ability to stop a vehicle on wet roads. It doesn't reflect a tire's acceleration, cornering, or hydroplaning performance. Traction grades range from AA (highest) to C (lowest).

Temperature grades the tire's ability to withstand heat build-up, with A being the highest grade and C the lowest.

A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 to 115 mph
C - Between 85 to 100 mph
Treadwear: 820
Traction Asphalt - gForce
AA - Above 0.54
A - Above 0.47
B - Above 0.38
C - Less Than 0.38
A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 and 115 mph
C - Between 85 and 100 mph

Drive / Ride Performance Characteristics

All tires have the following six performance characteristics, divided into three sets of trade-offs. In most cases, a tire may perform excellently in one characteristic but only standard in the other.
Standard Ride Comfort & Standard Handling
Handling: Get stiff side wall for precise steering and cornering but settle for a firm ride with increased road noise.
Ride Comfort: Enjoy a quiet, smooth ride but lose some cornering ability.
Standard Treadwear & Standard Traction
Traction: Stop faster in wet conditions but expect a shorter tread life.
Treadwear: Get long, uniform wear across your tread pattern but expect less traction in wet conditions.
Standard Low Rolling Resistance & Standard High Speed Performance
High-Speed Performance: Get increased performance at higher speeds but sacrifice some fuel economy.
Low Rolling Resistance: Enjoy improved fuel efficiency but expect less high-speed cornering ability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Great quality - Highly recommend Installed 2 months ago on my Sienna 2005 Mini Van. These tires are replacing the second set of tires on this vehicle, also Michelin. Have nothing bad to say about these tires. As advertised, they are a quite running tire. They have excellent handling performance. They feel sure when braking. Performs well on dry and rain, the winter will be the real test but I feel confident that I will not be disappointed. Yes, these are a better grade of tire, costing a little more but they are well worth the extra money. I would HIGHLY recommend these tires to anyone, feeling certain that they will not be disappointed. September 5, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best tires I've owned After much consideration, I stepped up and bought these 90 K tires for our Honda Odessey with 150 K on the van. I really can't believe how much better the van handles and how much less road noise we have. These are great tires that I'd recommend to anyone that is considering spending a few more dollars for MUCH better tires!! September 4, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Never drive without them I was waiting 3 months for those tires. Finally, my Civic Hybrid has best "shoes" I could possibly have. Drive is comfortable, handles perfectly and I would suggest to never settle for less than Michelin. August 27, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Sold on Michelin Recently bought a set of Michelin Defenders for my 2006 Honda Odyssey. I have had the tires for about 3 weeks and have about 1,000 miles on them. So far so good. I always buy Michelin because they have always worked well. My Odyssey is so big and heavey that it never quite gets the expected life out of tires and brakes. The 90,000 mile warranty is what got my attention. I hope it proves to be true. I marked all ratings excellent but do not know about the wear-life and mileage yet. I am going on Michelin's claim. The first 2 sets of tires only lasted around 45,000 miles and were also Michelin but did not have this type of wear-life. August 27, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Defender Tires Excellent tires, quietest and best ride I ever had and I love the 90,000 mile warranty too as its the last tires I will need to purchase for my Dodge Grand Caravan. August 24, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Chevy Impala Defender Tires I purchased the Defenders tires for my 2009 Chevy Impala. Can't believe how much of a smooth and quite ride I am getting with these tires. I went to buy these tires based on all the info and reviews regarding them and the tire company talked me into something different. Should have listened to myself and bought them right away but within 3 weeks of driving the other tire I had them order the Defenders and change them. Best decision I made. What a difference!! August 22, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Immediate improvement The tires were mounted on my 2009 Ford Fusion and I immediately noticed an improvement in the ride and handling. I only have a few hundred miles on the tires so I can't attest to the claim of increased gasoline mileage, but I am very pleased with the tires and Michelin as a company. August 21, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by What a difference the right tire makes! Although I do not have many miles on this new set of Defenders, I can already tell a difference! These tires are like driving on a cloud. Cornering is good but could be a little better. The noise and comfort levels are what has me sold on this tire (and pretty much all Michelins). I have always put Michelins on my cars and the Defender only confirms my reasoning. They are well worth every penny I spent on them. I drive everyday with combined city and highway. In the city there seems to be less noise than on the highway (but most of the interstates around here are concrete, so that adds a little to the noise level). I have a 2007 Mazda3, and they are KNOWN for road noise, but with the Defenders it has subdued that quite a bit. These tires are worth their weight in gold and will gladly purchase them again and again! August 15, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by SUV Driving conditions are country, interstate, rain, ice on overpasses and snow. I immediately noticed better stability on turns, a firm ride (like a new vehicle), and gas savings on dry roads. I have every confidence that I'll not have a problem this year with winter conditions. I encouraged my son to purchase these for his F250. His concern is the price. With his driving conditions, I'm willing to make the purchase. These are the best tires I've ever had in 40 years of driving. August 14, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by defender JUST PURCHASED THESE TIRES 8/15/2012,SMOOTH RIDE AND GREAT PROFORMANCE, TIRE ARE AWESOME!!!!!!!! August 14, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by So far they are great. Seem like a good Tires installed this morning. Went straight to Interstate 10 in the rain. Handled beautifully at speeds up to 95mph. I drove 136 miles each way. August 13, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by 2005 Honda Odyssey Bought 4 Defender XT for the Odyssey less than 2 months ago, handling and comfort are good but the tires are a bit noisy on concrete and asphalt, even my 9 years old noticed it. Don't know why other reviewers said it's quiet though. May be there is a 'break-in' period on the noise. I don't know how it goes in the snow yet, will see in a few months. August 7, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by GREAT TIRES As soon as I drove off the lot I noticed an immideate difference. The ride quality im well improoved, wet traction is great, and it saves me fuel. August 5, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by I would by this tire for all my cars I did a lot of research and finalized on the Defenders. They were the best ones I could find and rated the best by numerous businesses. Today is just my second week of driving on these tires and I can clearly notice the difference from the other new tires I had on my 2006 Suburu Forester AWD. I switched from a 215/60/16 rectangular tire to a higher profile 215/65/16. MPG (old - 29 mpg) has increased by 3MPG. The ride is a lot smoother and the noise has been significantly reduced. Handeling performance has increased - steering seems more responsive, cornering control as good as the lower profile tires or better, stopping is better, and rain traction has improved (no Hydroplaning now). I have older Michelins (more aggressive) on my Durango but will switch to Defenders if they ever wear out. Excellent tire - don't be afraid to buy. July 29, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Quietist tire I ever owned PRO.These tire are the quietist tires I ever owned after 55 years of driveing, CON. I can now hear my wife when she's talking in the car all the time. July 21, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by I noticed the difference!! Awsome Tires! I have 2004 Ford Taurus and since I had bought it used, the tires on it were all 4 different brands on each wheel... and were wearing out. I did a lot of research and finalized on the Defenders. They were the best ones I could find!! Today is just my second day driving and I can clearly notice the difference!! The ride is a lot more smoother and noise has significantly reduced!! I did not see too mucg of a difference in handling performance... but I guess the tires need to run in for 500 miles before they get to thier normal! I am really impressed with them so far... lets see how long they last... but a 80k mile treadwear warranty makes me comfortable that they will last and last and last... !! Michelin (thru an offer from my Ford Delaer) also threw in the Road Hazard warranty for free!! July 17, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by The "DEFENDER" tires are the best! I have been a Michelin tire user for years and only a few days ago I came across comments concerning the "Defender" tire by Michelin. I was so amazed by the comments I bought a set of Defenders in stead of Symmetry this time and I can validate the comments I have read, these are the best of the best! July 17, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by DePax your Odyssey Van with Defenders After dealing with the poor wear (30,000K max) and very poor light snow performance/cost of PAX tires, I was very careful to find appropriate replacements for the PAX system. Had to buy new Honda (steel) wheels and covers. Ordered new TPMS sensors, but found the existing ones on the PAX system fit perfectly (got full refund on ordered sensors). These Defenders are the way to go - they came out at the right time! Have ~5K on the tires - waitibng to see how they perform in winter driving. So far so good! July 9, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Michelins 0n 4 Honda Accords since 1986 I've just replaced 4 Michelin Harmony tires today on my 1998 Honda Accord LX with 4 new Michelin Defender XTs. The Harmony tires (rated at 80,000 miles) lasted 9 years over 91,000 miles, and although they may have comfortably given me an additional 6 months/5000 miles, I opted for safety. I routinely have tires rotated and pressure adjusted approx every 8,000 miles at the local Honda dealer where I have all my servicing done. This is our touring car. We make 5 or 6 trips a year ranging from 250 to 800 miles per round trip in addition to an 1,100 mile trip to Canada every other year. I look forward to the new Defenders' performance July 4, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by New Defenders = Impressive Just replaced the original LX4 tires on my 07 Honda Odyssey with a set of 4 Defender tires. On a recent roadtrip the tires performed extremely well. Handling and braking were excellent, and there was very little if any road noise. Fuel efficiency was right on the same track as the original equipment tires. The comfort and smoothness of the ride in my opinion takes a close second to the LX4's. I believe this is because the Defender tire carries a 90,000 mile warranty as the original LX4's only lasted 50,000 miles. Also, the sidewall design is a little less attractive as the LX4 but still looks great on the vehicle. I would recommend these tires to anyone looking for great handling in any types of weather. June 28, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent TIRE I bought these tires last week and so far I like my purchase. The car drives smoother, better and overall just feels like a new car! I replaced the tires that came on my car when I first purchased it and I must say I am glad I went with Michelin. Michelin is the best brand out there! Now my car can handle any weather! Thanks Michelin!!! June 24, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Simply THE BEST Michelin simply makes the BEST tire you can buy. I have a set of Harmony tires on a VW with over 50,000 miles of trouble free driving. Even the tire store is amazed that they still have 50% of life left when they balance and rotate the tires. The DEFENDER is a terrifc solid ride on our Honda CRV. With a 90,000 mile warranty, I expect these to be equally as good as the Harmony. Michelin tires will continue to be my family's choice of tire. June 21, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Very Good So Far I have 2007 Accord that came with OEM Michelin Energy MXV4 that lasted 67K. I replaced MXV4 with Defender and so far I'm happy about the purchase and don't even have one negative thing to say about. June 19, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by NO MORE SCARY DRIVING IN A STORM. you will never want to experience your vehicle slide across 3 lanes of traffic because your tires lost grip of the road, and your 2 year old in the back seat. As a Father, Tire Techician, and ''CAR CRAZY''. I RECOMMEND THE ''DEFENDER'' or any MICHELIN tire. June 16, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by New Car Feel I just bought these tires to replace my old hydroedges on my 2002 Honda CRV. I wasn't sure I wanted to go with Michelins again because I did not like the hydroedge tires for my car. They were too noisy and had a high pitched whine when I drove at highway speed. Also, all four tires started wearing badly and cracking on the outside no matter how often I had alignments done, even though they weren't wearing in the middle. They were in such bad shape with 30,000 miles on them that no place wanted to repair one of the tires that had picked up a nail (the place where I originally bought them finally did). I am glad to say that the salesperson who helped me with my tire selection convinced me to try the new defenders with the promise that I could bring them back if I didn't like them. Well, there is no way I am returning them! These are possibly the best Michelin tires that I have ever experienced and I have bought only Michelins since owning my first car (my Dad is a Michelin fan too). They drive like on glass, turn on a dime and the ride is blessedly quiet, even at high speeds. Thank you Michelin, I am once again a very satisfied Michelin customer. I don't know yet about the wear life, and fuel efficiency since I have not had them long, but so far I am very happy! I may provide more of an update regarding that later. June 15, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by I would buy this product again and agai i like this tire because i ... oh god i love it June 11, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Value for the Money Replaced all four tires. Was impressed with the new feel and ride both on city streets and the highway. My old tires were vibrating at 70 mph at highway speeds. I ran these new ones up to 100 mph no vibration. I chose these tires for the weir and mileage to be expected. Noting the best value over several brands and mileage ratings (Number of mile/$) these tires were 833 m/$. June 6, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Where safety comes first. Michelin uses cutting edge technology to give superior performance in any kind of road condition, dry or wet. Today's autos are pushed harder and faster than ever before, and its nice to know your family's safety is protected by the best tire that is made. Some things cannot be valued by money. June 5, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great comfort ride like my Energy LX4 A very good replacement for Honda Odessey LX4 Energy , will hope to out last the original 50k miles . So far the Defender rides similar to LX4 Energy and handles very good. Can't say much about energy efficiency, and stopping faster and hydro riding effect yet. Woould be similar if not better than older tech. Will keep you posted. June 2, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by The new Defender This is my first set of the Michelin Defender. So far I am very impressed with them. I have Michelin tires on all of my vehicles and for the safety of always haveing a high rated tires on my vehicles it is worth the slightly higher price. I have bought around 40 sets of Michelin tires and if you figure the price per mile, they are very cost wise.I normally get 60,000 to 70,000 miles on Michelin tires. I just hope these last as long as the Hydroedge tires did. May 26, 2012
