Load Range

Safety Rating is a combination of two values: Load Index and Speed Rating for P-Metric and Euro Metric tire sizes; and Load Range and Speed Rating in the case of heavy duty LT (light truck) sizes.

Speed Rating is based on the speed that the tire is designed to be driven at for extended periods of time. All tires in the in the U.S. are designed to maintain legal U.S. speed limits. The speed rating of tires must match the maximum driving speed of the vehicle.

Load Index is used on P metric and Euro Metric sized tires and denotes a tire's load-carrying capacity at a specified inflation pressure. The load index is represented by a number, the higher the Load Index Value the greater the load the tire can safely carry. Vehicle manufacturers recommend a maximum load capacity based on a recommended minimum load index.

Tire Class

Tire Class reflects how the tire will be used. There are four major categories: All-Season, Max Performance, Summer-Only and Winter-Use.

All-Season tires are suitable for year-round driving in all weather conditions.

Summer-Only & Max Performance tires are specifically designed for high-performance driving. Tire compound, tread design and speed ratings all combine to hug the road and maintain grip. Summer tires by nature are not ideal for winter driving due to lack of siding to grip winter roads.

Winter-Use tires have tread compounds and patterns that are specially designed for grip on snowy or icy road surfaces. They are not suitable for year-round use. The rubber compound used will wear more quickly on dry, summer roads. It is recommended that winter tires are fitted as a complete set to avoid potential handling issues.

Tread Type

Tread Type is an important consideration when choosing a tire. There are four main types: Passenger, Highway, All-Terrain and Mud-Terrain.

Passenger denotes a tread that is suitable for normal use, a good all-round tread for normal driving.

Highway is a tread type unique to SUV and truck tires. The tread is optimized for normal everyday driving on paved surfaces. These tires can be driven off pavement, but are not ideally suited for off road traction. Highway tread patterns deliver a quiet ride.

For light trucks and specialty vehicles, All-Terrain tread types provide better off-road traction than standard highway truck tires. There more aggressive tread tends to be less quiet on paved roads. All Terrain tires are suitable for everyday use.

Mud-Terrain treads are specifically designed with wider tread blocks and higher void ratios to gain traction in off-road conditions. Mud Terrain tires can generate higher noise levels and tend to carry lower mileage warranties than other tread designs.

UTQG - Uniform Tire Quality Grade

UTQG (Uniform Tire Quality Grade) is made up of three values: treadwear, traction and temperature.

Treadwear is a relative numeric score, based on manufacturer tests, showing how well a tire can be expected to wear compared to other tires. A higher score means a tire could be expected to wear better.

Traction measures the tire's ability to stop a vehicle on wet roads. It doesn't reflect a tire's acceleration, cornering, or hydroplaning performance. Traction grades range from AA (highest) to C (lowest).

Temperature grades the tire's ability to withstand heat build-up, with A being the highest grade and C the lowest.

A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 to 115 mph
C - Between 85 to 100 mph
Treadwear: 820
Traction Asphalt - gForce
AA - Above 0.54
A - Above 0.47
B - Above 0.38
C - Less Than 0.38
A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 and 115 mph
C - Between 85 and 100 mph

Drive / Ride Performance Characteristics

All tires have the following six performance characteristics, divided into three sets of trade-offs. In most cases, a tire may perform excellently in one characteristic but only standard in the other.
Standard Ride Comfort & Standard Handling
Handling: Get stiff side wall for precise steering and cornering but settle for a firm ride with increased road noise.
Ride Comfort: Enjoy a quiet, smooth ride but lose some cornering ability.
Standard Treadwear & Excellent Traction
Traction: Stop faster in wet conditions but expect a shorter tread life.
Treadwear: Get long, uniform wear across your tread pattern but expect less traction in wet conditions.
Excellent LowRolling Resistance & Standard High Speed Performance
High-Speed Performance: Get increased performance at higher speeds but sacrifice some fuel economy.
Low Rolling Resistance: Enjoy improved fuel efficiency but expect less high-speed cornering ability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Defender Review - Volvo S90 Replacement tires for Michelin Primacy MV4, Defenders have great ride quality, all season tire. I have trusted Michelin for years and cannot say enough regarding tread life, quality of ride & value provided. Great tires, great product. December 22, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Solid Tire So far the Defender seems like a great tire. Far better than the others before. December 22, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent Products I have bought Michelin Tires for years and have never been disappointed. Their wear and ride is fantastic. December 21, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Love the Michelin Defenders Love the new tires: They ride smooth as silk and I feel very secure as they have a great "grip" on the road. Have always liked and used Michelin tires but these are the best yet. Ned December 21, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by So far so good! Snow test today! Looking for quiet, better gas milage, great riding, better handling and so far OK. Now, we will see how they do in the snow. Going sking today. rcl December 21, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by great tires my car is small and the tires it came with were horrible...especially in bad weather. my new Defenders are great! The car holds the road better and there is less road noise. Worth the investment!! December 21, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by 45 Years of Michelin I don't need to rate the tire, I have been buying Michelin for 45 years. In fact I have never bought another brand unless it was on a car that I purchased. I'm retired now but was a salesman on the road for 39 years and wouldn't own any other brand of tire. Over those years living in Minnesota I have driven in almost every kind of condition you can imagine, from ice to snow, heavy rain, hot, cold, gravel, tar, cement you name it, and have always felt safe and confident that the tires on my car wouldn't let me down. My last set of Primacy got me 85,000 miles. Arnie Tietz December 21, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Outstanding tires I have the Defender tires on a Ford 500, 2007. Ths car is used for family driving in all kinds of weather. These tires are all I had hoped for in snow, ice, and dry roads. There is virtually no road noise. Handling is noticeably better than any other tire I have ever had. December 21, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best I have ever owned Great grip in all condition, quiet, rolling resistance noticably smaller, just a great tire. December 21, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Harmony upgrade to Defender I just purchased the Defender as an upgrade from the Harmony. 5 years and 96,000 miles ago, I purchased the Harmony tires. What a marvelous, quiet, smooth ride they produced. No need for balance or alignment; all taken care of at the dealer at no cost. To get an "extra" 16,000 miles from the guaranteed 80,000 miles was a real bonus. No wonder I'm back for the newly purchased and upgraded Defenders!! December 21, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by defender Very good on wet roads. Quiet, with excellent stability and straight line performance. So far, very pleased. December 21, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great value Nice quiet ride. Gas mileage has also improved December 21, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by I would buy this product again and again Excellent product. Great ride and handling. December 21, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by I love these tires I love Michelin tires, they stop shorter and actually keep me from slipping on slippery roads. They handle well at all different speeds, city streets as well as turnpikes. I drove in a couple inches of slush and had no trouble moving or stopping. I would recommend them to everyone. December 21, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Immediate and long-term difference I purchased Michelin Defender tires for my 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid. I was looking for a top notch tire for a low price and I think I nailed it. I purchased these tires about 3 weeks ago and have put about 1,000 miles on them already. They have GREAT handling, GREAT stopping power and somehow they still have low rolling resistance which is felt when the car is in neutral. I immediately felt a difference in the handling and how the car rides with these tires, and after 1,000 miles I'm still loving it. We just got a big snowstorm that came through, and the tires handled it so well, I got to be that guy everyone hates who speeds by. Very impressed and I would buy these tires again in a heartbeat. Rated 5 out of 5 by Good price on GREAT tires... Replaced at Thanksgiving and had a blizzard 1 week before Christmas. Only have FWD, but my CRV had no trouble getting through the snow and ice. Hope they last close to the 90,000 mile warranty. Since I have only had these about a month I am rating them N/A on "wear-life" Thanks... December 21, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Defender are great Wisconsin weather is supremely demanding and I would rather be on the Defenders than anything else. I have four Honda Civics, and now two with a complete set of Defenders. Thanks Michelin. December 21, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Just Michelin - The Best Smooth ride, long life, good mpd = good value December 21, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Good tires I have put about 10K miles on these tires on a 2010 Impala (I drive about 5K / mo. mostly highway miles). They ride smooth and quiet and handle very good in the rain. I have lost about 1.5 miles per gallon in mileage from the original tires that came on the car. But these tires handle better and are quieter and smoother riding. I was surprised at the ride out of such a high mileage tire. December 21, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Tires The defender tire has a smooth ride and tracks extremely well. Noticed a difference in vehicle stability immediately. If it wears well they will be the best tires I've ever purchased. December 21, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by I would Buy these again. I installed 4 Defenders on my 2008 Honda Civic. THe ride is smooth, quiet and the handling great. The car rides like a bigger car. I would definitely purchase another set. December 21, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great! I have no issues with the tires! When I drive in the rain, I know I have the safest tires on the market to keep me safe. Wouldn't want to put any others on my car. December 20, 2012
Rated 2 out of 5 by not a good replacement for energy saver i am a courier and have bought michelin energy saver tires 4 times and have been very happy. they are no longer available at every attempt to buy i was steered to the defender tire which i ended up buying. quiet, good in rain, looks like it wears well- all things i expect in a michelin tire. the problem is my 2000 honda insight fuel economy has gone from a very consistent 51 mpg to 43 mpg immediately starting with these tires. i know they were rated by michelin at 8 stars out of 10, but that is not accurate compared to the energy savers.(tires are broke in, over 20k and hasnt improved) December 20, 2012
Rated 3 out of 5 by Rides great but...... Rides great, stops great, but lost 5 mpg. December 14, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by I love my new tires I bought 4 new Defender tires before my trip to Fl from NY and I couldn't believe how smooth my ride was. My Camry handled very well with my Defenders. I LOVE THEM!!!!!! December 13, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great with one caveat There was a mix up at the dealer and somehow I had Primacy MX4's installed instead of the Defenders. I went back after 3 days to have the Defenders installed so I have 3 days Primacy use and one day Defender use. I would say they are the top two tires I have ever had from when I was a kid in the family car all the way up to now, when I am 55 years old, with the possible exception of the old quiet smooth radial ride the Lincolns gave back in the old days of big boaty land yacht cars, cheap gas, and all engineering focusing strictly on quiet and smooth ride. If you held a gun to my head and made me choose, I would say I barely have a preference for the Primacy's but not so much that I would choose them over the Defender because the difference is so slight I lean towards the 90,000 mile warranty on the defender because I figure that gives me a year or two extra use over the 60k Primacy warranty for effectively the same money. They both kick original equipment's butt, minimal road noise, great handling, smooth ride, and noticeable stopping ability difference over the oe. So I say go Defender for the warranty. But they're both great. December 11, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Defender Really Performs I purchased the Defender line of Michelin tires as a replacement set for a Volve V70 XC. The car is used for fairly long commutes. The first thing that I noticed was that the comfort of ride immediately improved upon buying the Michelin's. Road noise and road vibration was significantly reduced. The next measurement of improvement over previous tires was road handling and reduced stopping distance. I haven't really had a chance to measure fuel economy, but I believe that I will also see and improvement in that category as well. I am thoroughly satisfied with this produce and highly recommend that anyone give strong consideration to buying Michelin Defender model of tire. December 11, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by would buy again tires ride well, noise level low, handle wet conditions like no other tire I have experience, love the fact there UNION MADE IN USA!!!!!!!!!!! Well worth the money! December 10, 2012
