Load Range

Safety Rating is a combination of two values: Load Index and Speed Rating for P-Metric and Euro Metric tire sizes; and Load Range and Speed Rating in the case of heavy duty LT (light truck) sizes.

Speed Rating is based on the speed that the tire is designed to be driven at for extended periods of time. All tires in the in the U.S. are designed to maintain legal U.S. speed limits. The speed rating of tires must match the maximum driving speed of the vehicle.

Load Index is used on P metric and Euro Metric sized tires and denotes a tire's load-carrying capacity at a specified inflation pressure. The load index is represented by a number, the higher the Load Index Value the greater the load the tire can safely carry. Vehicle manufacturers recommend a maximum load capacity based on a recommended minimum load index.

Tire Class

Tire Class reflects how the tire will be used. There are four major categories: All-Season, Max Performance, Summer-Only and Winter-Use.

All-Season tires are suitable for year-round driving in all weather conditions.

Summer-Only & Max Performance tires are specifically designed for high-performance driving. Tire compound, tread design and speed ratings all combine to hug the road and maintain grip. Summer tires by nature are not ideal for winter driving due to lack of siding to grip winter roads.

Winter-Use tires have tread compounds and patterns that are specially designed for grip on snowy or icy road surfaces. They are not suitable for year-round use. The rubber compound used will wear more quickly on dry, summer roads. It is recommended that winter tires are fitted as a complete set to avoid potential handling issues.

Tread Type

Tread Type is an important consideration when choosing a tire. There are four main types: Passenger, Highway, All-Terrain and Mud-Terrain.

Passenger denotes a tread that is suitable for normal use, a good all-round tread for normal driving.

Highway is a tread type unique to SUV and truck tires. The tread is optimized for normal everyday driving on paved surfaces. These tires can be driven off pavement, but are not ideally suited for off road traction. Highway tread patterns deliver a quiet ride.

For light trucks and specialty vehicles, All-Terrain tread types provide better off-road traction than standard highway truck tires. There more aggressive tread tends to be less quiet on paved roads. All Terrain tires are suitable for everyday use.

Mud-Terrain treads are specifically designed with wider tread blocks and higher void ratios to gain traction in off-road conditions. Mud Terrain tires can generate higher noise levels and tend to carry lower mileage warranties than other tread designs.

UTQG - Uniform Tire Quality Grade

UTQG (Uniform Tire Quality Grade) is made up of three values: treadwear, traction and temperature.

Treadwear is a relative numeric score, based on manufacturer tests, showing how well a tire can be expected to wear compared to other tires. A higher score means a tire could be expected to wear better.

Traction measures the tire's ability to stop a vehicle on wet roads. It doesn't reflect a tire's acceleration, cornering, or hydroplaning performance. Traction grades range from AA (highest) to C (lowest).

Temperature grades the tire's ability to withstand heat build-up, with A being the highest grade and C the lowest.

A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 to 115 mph
C - Between 85 to 100 mph
Treadwear: 820
Traction Asphalt - gForce
AA - Above 0.54
A - Above 0.47
B - Above 0.38
C - Less Than 0.38
A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 and 115 mph
C - Between 85 and 100 mph

Drive / Ride Performance Characteristics

All tires have the following six performance characteristics, divided into three sets of trade-offs. In most cases, a tire may perform excellently in one characteristic but only standard in the other.
Standard Ride Comfort & Standard Handling
Handling: Get stiff side wall for precise steering and cornering but settle for a firm ride with increased road noise.
Ride Comfort: Enjoy a quiet, smooth ride but lose some cornering ability.
Standard Treadwear & Standard Traction
Traction: Stop faster in wet conditions but expect a shorter tread life.
Treadwear: Get long, uniform wear across your tread pattern but expect less traction in wet conditions.
Standard Low Rolling Resistance & Standard High Speed Performance
High-Speed Performance: Get increased performance at higher speeds but sacrifice some fuel economy.
Low Rolling Resistance: Enjoy improved fuel efficiency but expect less high-speed cornering ability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Value This is the second set of Michelin tires we have purchased for our car. They look good and wear well. Overall, they are excellent value for the money. December 2, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Completely Different Ride OMGoodness - My car feels like a completely different animal with these four new tires on. Distance driving is a joy with these tires. Stopping power and traction are excellent. These tires are well worth a few extra dollars. November 28, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by DEFENDER TIRES I purchased the Defender tires after much research. So far, they have been excellent. Great in the rain...quiet, have noticed better gas consumption. The big test will come over the next couple of months when I see how they do on my 70 mile a day trip to work and back in the snow. November 28, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best ride so far! I was frustrated with the last several discount tires I purchased because after 40K miles they would start to shimmy which drove me crazy. I finally decided to upgrade to a premium tire and chose Michelin. I'm pleased with their performance so far (about 10K miles and ride is still very smooth). I hope they will be as stable after more wear as they are now. November 28, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best tire at best price They feel very solid, run quiet. Very reasonably priced. Didn't cost any more to go with the best (by their reputation, my longtime opinion, and most recent Consumers Report) What else? November 28, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Very quiet and smooth riding tires I brought the Michelin Defender tires for my SUV in the fall of 2012. My Suzuki Grand Vitara now rides smoother and quieter than it did the day I brought it! The tires are great and they reduce the "bumps" in the road so that you don't feel them much and they are very quiet at all speeds. The handling of my SUV is still great too. I have been a Michelin customer for years and these tires don't disappoint. Great job Michelin! November 28, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by They are what we thought they were! Bought for our Honda crv. They are quiet, handle really well in all weather conditions, that we get in the midwest. Great looking tire too! We now have Michelins on 3 of our 4 cars. Excellant quality. You certainly get what you pay for. Have already recommended them to friends. Mp November 28, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by smoothest ride I can remember Handling is better than any tire I have ever purchased including other Michelins. November 28, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best set of tires we have ever bought The ride is smooth and quiet and the tires have great traction. We use the car these are on for touring and are completely satisfied. November 28, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Smooth & quiet ride Replaced OEM Primacy on C280 2007. Nice handling, quiet on the highway. Got caught up north and they handled first snow with fair traction. After 3 months usage, I am 100% satisfied and considering them for my van in the spring. November 28, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by i would buy this product again recommended this to a friend November 28, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by "Got the look and ride" Handles well and looks sharp. It has a economical price and wears slowly. November 28, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by delighted Several months ago I purchased Defenders for my Xterra. Even allowing for the difference between the semi-offroad type and the road type, not only was my ride stunningly smoother, but my mileage went from 17 mpg avg to 20+ mpg avg. That's a stunning percentage. Yesterday I put Defenders on our Corolla, and the drive home included 70 miles of narrow, twisting road, rain, and some freeway driving. Like driving a new car. Not merely a softer ride, but lovely gripping capability. Thank you Michelin. November 23, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Quietest Tires I researched tires for a long time before I decided that the Michelin Defenders were the one for us. My wife drives the car 99% of the time and I was most concerned with safety. I was a bit worried about road noise because I read a few bad reviews, but there were plenty of good ones too. I had to depress the clutch at 75 mph to quiet the engine noise so I could even hear the tires. Even then, they were barely audible above the wind noise. The model is a '89 Corolla. Too early to tell about wear, but these are the best tires I have ever bought. November 19, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Odessey Van Purchased tires a few days ago and already feel the difference. Ride is much smoother, crisp handeling and cabin noise reduced significantly. Very pleased so far. November 18, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by My Defenders This tire is saving me some gas i've notice. Not only that the smoother ride and handling. I'm sticking to this tire until they make something better. On my 2003 Honda Odyssey. I'm happy with the warranty. November 16, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Still the best tire ever Stop and Go traffic, Touring and the combination of both. The Michelins are the quietest tires around. The Michelins are super sticky even in heavy rains on road curves. Back in 1968 when I would borrow my Dads Chrysler Newport that he put Michelins on and he still got 60,000 miles life even with a teenage son and my driving. The things that aren't so great is that the Michelins eventually wear out except long after the competitions. November 15, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Now That's a good ride! Loved my new Focus except for the terrible road noise. And the OEM tires that came on it only lasted 28000 miles. Asked my tire dealer for a tire that would be quiet, long on mileage and good for fuel economy. He recommended the Defender. What a difference! Now the ride is so quiet and smooth and the car handles better on wet roads . With the 80000 mile warranty , I think these tires will be worth every penny! Just a world of difference!! November 13, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great I just got my tires on the 31st of Oct. I like the way they stop and the smooth ride I am getting. My gas mileage is going up a little. November 12, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Quite Just purchased four of these tires today. I drove 20 miles home on both Interstate Highway and city streets. These were the quitest tires I have ever had and the ride was very smooth and steady. November 7, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best Tires Michelin Makes Bought these tire November 7, 2012. I decided to take them for a drive to break them in. After 100 miles roundtrip, all I can say I WOW! I had MXV4's on my Grand Marquis before these, and as they say, they stop faster, ride smoother, handle better, and are a lot lot more comfortable to drive on. I filled up my tank before the ride, and figured my gas mileage for my little trip afterwards when I filled up again. I normally averaged 20 miles a gallon on the highway. After filling up I figured it to be 24 miles to a gallon. I hope this keeps up with the way the gas prices are. Don't think twice BUY THESE TIRES, not only will you be happy but your vehicle as well. Rated 5 out of 5 by Defender tires I love these tires, grip the road and just rides so smoothly! October 30, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by True Michelins !!! Replaced my Michelin Primacy MXV4 tires with the Defenders on my Merc-S. Its been 4000 miles since I replaced the tires. Was a little skeptical that I may be compromising on the ride and noise for the extra mileage the Defender tires offer. But to my pleasant surprise and liking none of that has been impacted. The ride is very quite as with Michelin Primacys. The real test is going to be in the snow weather which seems to be coming to our part of the country shortly. Will keep updating the site with my experiences over the seasons and increased mileage on the tires. October 21, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Michelin Tires Michelin Tires are simply the best. I have used other brands, but they do not make me feel as safe on my vehicle. I prefer to have and know that I am driving with Michelin because then I not only have peace of mind but I then also feel safe and know that they are durable and stand behind their product. Other brands fall seem to either fall apart from wear and tear more rapidly or they do not actually stand behind their products. October 19, 2012
Rated 2 out of 5 by Honda Civic - Very Noisy I recently purchased four Defender tires for my 2010 Honda Civic. The tires are noisy and at highway speeds around 55 mph they are extremely noisy. I have always purchased Michelin tires in the past, but it would be hard to recommend the Defenders because of the noise. October 17, 2012
Rated 2 out of 5 by defemder defender tires--purchased june 4 2012-first tank of gas after purchase i had lost 3 miles per gallon-now oct 18 2012 this last tank fuel went to 22 mi per gal. versus the 26.6-27-4 i was gettting before these tires. my 2010 honda crv tires only had 26,000 miles on them and were shot. the defenders are not quiet either. certain hwy's going to columbus oh they were down right noisey.--so i am not happy taking them in for a check up to see what might be the problem?--instead of gaining 3.5 mi per gall i lost it. October 17, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Quietiest tire I have ever had First off, 75% of my driving is highway. As my headline says this tire is very quiet. But no grip is sacrificed. Whether dry or wet, it is as stable as any so-called sport tire. Taking long curves at 75mph on the highway or 70-80 degree corners on rural road I have total confidence. I can not yet comment on wear as there is only 2K on them. I will review again when the snow flies. My son in law was the salesperson, but he was a testing participant at the Michelin factory in South Carolina. Very happy so far! I have seen other reviews where people say they have lost mpg, but there are other factors that cause that. I check psi every gas fill and will have them rotated and rebalanced at 5K miles. October 14, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by nice tires, would buy again very good tire. I bought for our own car because we use michelin tires on our feet at work. we have very good luck with them. October 13, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by The Best of the best I drive a 2010 ford Fusion Sel,and when I buought the car it had michelin Mxv4's on them,Great tire,But the Deffender is even better,I noticed instanlly the smoothness of the tires over the last ones, witch felt more rigid.I aslo notice they are Much Much quiter, and the handling is much better, and their rated at 90k,Best tire I ever owned! I would recommend to anyone! for any veh. October 8, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by 2002 Honda CRV After getting great service from my Hydroedges, I was torn about what to get to replace them. I loved they way they performed, but really hated the road noise. I'm now 10K into my Defenders and couldn't be happier. They are solid, have worn well (so far), and are very quiet. I'm reluctant to change tires once I find something I like (which is why I struggled over the change). I can't imagine finding anything that will suit me better than the Defenders....well done, Michelin. October 1, 2012
