Load Range

Safety Rating is a combination of two values: Load Index and Speed Rating for P-Metric and Euro Metric tire sizes; and Load Range and Speed Rating in the case of heavy duty LT (light truck) sizes.

Speed Rating is based on the speed that the tire is designed to be driven at for extended periods of time. All tires in the in the U.S. are designed to maintain legal U.S. speed limits. The speed rating of tires must match the maximum driving speed of the vehicle.

Load Index is used on P metric and Euro Metric sized tires and denotes a tire's load-carrying capacity at a specified inflation pressure. The load index is represented by a number, the higher the Load Index Value the greater the load the tire can safely carry. Vehicle manufacturers recommend a maximum load capacity based on a recommended minimum load index.

Tire Class

Tire Class reflects how the tire will be used. There are four major categories: All-Season, Max Performance, Summer-Only and Winter-Use.

All-Season tires are suitable for year-round driving in all weather conditions.

Summer-Only & Max Performance tires are specifically designed for high-performance driving. Tire compound, tread design and speed ratings all combine to hug the road and maintain grip. Summer tires by nature are not ideal for winter driving due to lack of siding to grip winter roads.

Winter-Use tires have tread compounds and patterns that are specially designed for grip on snowy or icy road surfaces. They are not suitable for year-round use. The rubber compound used will wear more quickly on dry, summer roads. It is recommended that winter tires are fitted as a complete set to avoid potential handling issues.

Tread Type

Tread Type is an important consideration when choosing a tire. There are four main types: Passenger, Highway, All-Terrain and Mud-Terrain.

Passenger denotes a tread that is suitable for normal use, a good all-round tread for normal driving.

Highway is a tread type unique to SUV and truck tires. The tread is optimized for normal everyday driving on paved surfaces. These tires can be driven off pavement, but are not ideally suited for off road traction. Highway tread patterns deliver a quiet ride.

For light trucks and specialty vehicles, All-Terrain tread types provide better off-road traction than standard highway truck tires. There more aggressive tread tends to be less quiet on paved roads. All Terrain tires are suitable for everyday use.

Mud-Terrain treads are specifically designed with wider tread blocks and higher void ratios to gain traction in off-road conditions. Mud Terrain tires can generate higher noise levels and tend to carry lower mileage warranties than other tread designs.

UTQG - Uniform Tire Quality Grade

UTQG (Uniform Tire Quality Grade) is made up of three values: treadwear, traction and temperature.

Treadwear is a relative numeric score, based on manufacturer tests, showing how well a tire can be expected to wear compared to other tires. A higher score means a tire could be expected to wear better.

Traction measures the tire's ability to stop a vehicle on wet roads. It doesn't reflect a tire's acceleration, cornering, or hydroplaning performance. Traction grades range from AA (highest) to C (lowest).

Temperature grades the tire's ability to withstand heat build-up, with A being the highest grade and C the lowest.

A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 to 115 mph
C - Between 85 to 100 mph
Treadwear: 820
Traction Asphalt - gForce
AA - Above 0.54
A - Above 0.47
B - Above 0.38
C - Less Than 0.38
A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 and 115 mph
C - Between 85 and 100 mph

Drive / Ride Performance Characteristics

All tires have the following six performance characteristics, divided into three sets of trade-offs. In most cases, a tire may perform excellently in one characteristic but only standard in the other.
Standard Ride Comfort & Standard Handling
Handling: Get stiff side wall for precise steering and cornering but settle for a firm ride with increased road noise.
Ride Comfort: Enjoy a quiet, smooth ride but lose some cornering ability.
Standard Treadwear & Standard Traction
Traction: Stop faster in wet conditions but expect a shorter tread life.
Treadwear: Get long, uniform wear across your tread pattern but expect less traction in wet conditions.
Standard Low Rolling Resistance & Standard High Speed Performance
High-Speed Performance: Get increased performance at higher speeds but sacrifice some fuel economy.
Low Rolling Resistance: Enjoy improved fuel efficiency but expect less high-speed cornering ability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Smooth and Quiet - Love These Tires! I put new Defenders on my 2007 Mazda 3. My previous two sets of tires were pretty noisy, but that's kind of the nature of the Mazda 3. These Defenders are so quiet, I can hardly believe it! I fell in love with my car all over again -- thanks, Michelin! July 8, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Noticeable Difference I purchased 4 new Michelin Defender tires got them mounted, balanced and had an alignment done on my 2010 Impala. Since then I have taken two road trips and have noticeably better gas mileage and a much more comfortable ride. I am extremely pleased with these tires and am excited to see how long they hold up for! July 7, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent Handling, a Bit Noisy I had a new set of four Defenders each installed on my Chevy Cobalt and Honda Civic. I am very happy with the performance on both cars. The handling on both cars is excellent -- both on the freeway and local roads. I've driven my Cobalt in the rain in the mountains and I have absolutely no complaints. Braking was excellent, and road handling was just as excellent. I've only driven my Civic on local city roads, and so far, so good. Since I have four cylinder cars, I have no complaints on fuel efficiency. I've only had one set for six months and the other for two, so I don't have much to say about wear life yet. The only complaint I have for both cars is that the tires are a little noisy. This is minor issue, since safety is a more important factor for me. I would definitely recommend Defenders to friends and family. July 4, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by My Defenders Give Me Peace of Mind These tires are excellent. Just replaced the OE Conti's on my 2011 Honda CRV that wore out way before my three year lease was even up. The 90,000 warranty is above and beyond what other competitors have -- Michelin's really putting their money where there mouth is. July 1, 2013
Rated 3 out of 5 by A good tire but not revolutionary This seems to be Michelin's answer to good average tires. They seem to be looking to raise the average with lower rolling resistance and higher treadwear but with maintaining decent comfort, not exceptional but better then an average long life (read stiffer rubber) tires. The only complaint i have is the very low hum from the tires, if your driving on a street with a window open and a curb next to you the sound gets amplified. July 1, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by What a smooth ride !!!! I get such a smooth ride w/the Michelin Defender tires. I noticed the difference right away. It felt like my car was riding on air. My Rav 4 never drove so good. I'll definitely but these tires again. June 29, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Just drove my new defenders home on my m Replaced my last set of name brand tires with a set of Michelin defenders. My mini-van has not handled as well as this since it was new twelve years ago. Good job Michelin. June 28, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Michelin Man is my guy!!! In the recent past I was "talked into trying" another brand of tires. After several cross country trips I knew that I had to return to my dependable Michelins...I had always had Michelins and even bragged about them so much that several family members switched to the Michelin brand. To make a long story short...I am a woman shopper on a budget. At the tire store I was led to a tire and told, "But, really Miss, this tire is in your price range and rides like a Michelin." Finally, I said, "Yes, I am a woman and I am not an expert on cars, but I know the tire I want and I want Michelins!" The Defender has made my little Corolla ride as smooth as silk and I could not be happier with my purchase!! To the women shoppers out not be swayed when you know what you want. My Michelins have always given a dependable, reliable, safe, comfortable ride. After my Defenders were installed I decided to take advantage of a rainstorm we were having. I drove on the Interstate and also down a small country backroad and they handled superbly! I will never own another brand of tire but Michelins...they are much more dependable, and cost efficient when you look at the big picture. Granted, because I am on a very tight budget I was only able to purchase the two rear tires, but I am saving my pennies, and next month I will purchase the two for the front. This will only improve the ride and drive of my little car so much that I might have to take another long road trip. How could I have forgotten this very important fact...these Defender tires are 100% more quiet than my other tires. I highly recommend Michelin Defenders. If you are a lady shopper, please do not go into the tire shop saying, "I need new tires, but I don't know anything about tires." You need the best...Michelins! June 27, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by As Good as Advertised Have about 2000 miles on a set of Defenders on 2002 Nissan Maxima, and I'm thoroughly impressed. Quiet and smooth as can be, and I am getting about 1 mpg better than before. Haven't had much wet experience, but they are way better than what I had. We will definitely put Defenders on our Odyssey when the time comes. Well done, Michelin. These are the best tires I've owned. June 24, 2013
Rated 3 out of 5 by Baffled I'm a bit baffled by the negative reviews on the Defender tires. We've been using Michelin tires on our Honda CR-Vs for thirteen years. Previously, I had Michelin Latitudes on my car; quite satisfactory. This time out, I put on Defenders... a bit early, but I could SEE the tread-wear indicators; decided it was time. Tires were NOT bald. No additional road noise (CR-Vs are notorious for that). No drop in gas mileage. I looked at my wife's CR-V and she has the Defenders, as well. She has ZERO issues with them. Time will tell if I get 95,000 miles. June 23, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Wow- what a difference! After only 12,000 miles the original tires on my 2010 Hyundai Elantra Touring needed replaced. Everyone I talked with recommended Michelin so I decided to give them a try. I had them installed and was blown away by the way my car drove! The difference was like night and day. My car is riding so much smoother now that I feel like I have a new car!Braking feels better and so does handling. I do suburban and a bit of city driving and don't put many miles on my vehicle so I have a feeling I'll have these tires for a long time! I only wish I'd replaced those original tires sooner. I'm definitely going to check my mileage now to see if it's any better since everything else sure is with these tires. I'm definitely sold on Michelin!! June 21, 2013
Rated 3 out of 5 by Yikees! We recently purchased the Defender tires for our 2002 Honda Odyssey. At first we were really pleased, handling seemed really good and it felt solid to the road but.......then came the first and subsequent filling up the gas tank and checking the mileage we were getting. That's were the yikees came in. We had been getting 18-22 mpg and now we were getting 11-14!!!! That's a huge drop! Not pleased and pretty sure we saw advertisements that stated we would get improved gas mileage with this tire. Be careful unless you like going to the gas station. June 20, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by The most quiet, smoothest ride ever. This is the first time I've ever actually noticed a difference in the ride, handling and quietness of any tire I've ever purchased. I've bought tires for myself and family for a long time and do check into the specs of a tire. With these tires I could tell driving home after the install that they were a change for the better. So far they are the best tires I've ever owned. I will be getting the Defender tire for my wife's car when she needs them in a few months. June 18, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Beautiful! Wonderful and smooth ride. So glad I went with Michelin tires. June 14, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great tires Great ride! We just put 2400 miles on these new tires and I thought the ride would be rough because of the 90,000 mile warranty. Boy was I wrong! Would recommend them to anyone! June 7, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Tire Nice Ride and Sound Michelin Makes a Superior Product no doubt about it... June 6, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great tires, Vendor got DOT # wrong Michelin are great tires. I know they haved saved my life while driving. I just wish the tire store could have got the DOT # correct on my receipt or even their own store ID #. Quality check on vendors of Michelin tires may be needed. June 6, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by great tire great tires i have had no problem with them so far and they have worked great for me i am very hard on my vehicles and they last up to the abuse i put on them everyday! June 5, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by only michelin tires for me just bought a set of LTX/2 for my 99 chev 4x4,back in April I had the old style LTX/MS on there for 10 yrs and 80,000 miles and they still had tread left, only reason I got a new set was, the tread separated and started to vibrate,so today I put a set of Defenders on my 2000 Buick what a difference in the car, they are quiet and drives like a new car Michelin is the only tire I buy for my vehicles hope they last as long as my first set on my chevy truck June 4, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great product I recently put a new set of Michelin Defenders on my 2006 Honda Odyessy. I love these tires! The ride is smooth and quiet. I recently took a trip through some mountainous areas of Arizona. The car handled well through multiple curves. These tires have been an excellent investment. June 2, 2013
Rated 3 out of 5 by A good tire Not my first set of michelins. The tires give vibration back thru steering column. Thought they weren't balanced but all checked out good. June 1, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent Tires These Defenders are as good as the HydroEdge that they replaced. I got 80000 miles out of the HydroEdge and expect the same from the Defenders. They are fantastic in the dry, in the rain, in the snow and at high speed. May 30, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Outstanding Tire My mechanic suggested I purchase Defender tires for my Subaru Outback. I am extremely pleased with the purchase. The ride is smooth and very, very quiet. My mileage is up slightly over 1 mile per gallon of gas. May 30, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by You Get What You Pay For This is the third set of Michilin tires. They just get better and better. Great, comfortable ride! Quiet! Cannot think of anything that I have not been pleased with. May 30, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Michelin Defender! Purchased a set of 4 Michelin Defender series tires for my AWD Saturn Vue. The tires have greatly improved the ride compared to previous import brand. 235 65R 16 tires. Excellent choice. The ol' saying; "you get what you pay for" is true! Love Michelin tires. Have a set of Michelin XT Radials on my Wife's 4X4 Blazer and they're still going strong after 6+ years! I highly recommend Michelin tires! May 29, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by I would definitely buy this tire again I purchased the Defender tire for my daughter's car because she is a graduate student and over 75 miles to and from school daily. I purchased the tires for longevity and dependability. The tires handle great, while providing a smooth and comfortable ride. I really love these tires. May 26, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Michelin Quality - 2nd to none I take great comfort in knowing, when my family and I are on the road, we are riding on the safest, most comfortable and most cost effective tire money can buy. Its easy folks, Michelin goes on before my family gets in! May 23, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great tire! I have an 05 CRV and these are great tires! They really hug the road in dry and wet weather. They give me comfort in knowing if I am running late, I can count on them to grip the road. I also appear to be getting 30 - 40 miles more per fill up than my previous tires also Michelin but a cheaper model. May 23, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by great tire Been riding on michelins for 30 years and they never let me down May 21, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by It Is What It Is The Defender is on my 09 Merc Grand Marquis.. Nice looking tire... Not as comfortable a ride as the original Michelin tires that came on the car... May 21, 2013
