Load Range

Safety Rating is a combination of two values: Load Index and Speed Rating for P-Metric and Euro Metric tire sizes; and Load Range and Speed Rating in the case of heavy duty LT (light truck) sizes.

Speed Rating is based on the speed that the tire is designed to be driven at for extended periods of time. All tires in the in the U.S. are designed to maintain legal U.S. speed limits. The speed rating of tires must match the maximum driving speed of the vehicle.

Load Index is used on P metric and Euro Metric sized tires and denotes a tire's load-carrying capacity at a specified inflation pressure. The load index is represented by a number, the higher the Load Index Value the greater the load the tire can safely carry. Vehicle manufacturers recommend a maximum load capacity based on a recommended minimum load index.

Tire Class

Tire Class reflects how the tire will be used. There are four major categories: All-Season, Max Performance, Summer-Only and Winter-Use.

All-Season tires are suitable for year-round driving in all weather conditions.

Summer-Only & Max Performance tires are specifically designed for high-performance driving. Tire compound, tread design and speed ratings all combine to hug the road and maintain grip. Summer tires by nature are not ideal for winter driving due to lack of siding to grip winter roads.

Winter-Use tires have tread compounds and patterns that are specially designed for grip on snowy or icy road surfaces. They are not suitable for year-round use. The rubber compound used will wear more quickly on dry, summer roads. It is recommended that winter tires are fitted as a complete set to avoid potential handling issues.

Tread Type

Tread Type is an important consideration when choosing a tire. There are four main types: Passenger, Highway, All-Terrain and Mud-Terrain.

Passenger denotes a tread that is suitable for normal use, a good all-round tread for normal driving.

Highway is a tread type unique to SUV and truck tires. The tread is optimized for normal everyday driving on paved surfaces. These tires can be driven off pavement, but are not ideally suited for off road traction. Highway tread patterns deliver a quiet ride.

For light trucks and specialty vehicles, All-Terrain tread types provide better off-road traction than standard highway truck tires. There more aggressive tread tends to be less quiet on paved roads. All Terrain tires are suitable for everyday use.

Mud-Terrain treads are specifically designed with wider tread blocks and higher void ratios to gain traction in off-road conditions. Mud Terrain tires can generate higher noise levels and tend to carry lower mileage warranties than other tread designs.

UTQG - Uniform Tire Quality Grade

UTQG (Uniform Tire Quality Grade) is made up of three values: treadwear, traction and temperature.

Treadwear is a relative numeric score, based on manufacturer tests, showing how well a tire can be expected to wear compared to other tires. A higher score means a tire could be expected to wear better.

Traction measures the tire's ability to stop a vehicle on wet roads. It doesn't reflect a tire's acceleration, cornering, or hydroplaning performance. Traction grades range from AA (highest) to C (lowest).

Temperature grades the tire's ability to withstand heat build-up, with A being the highest grade and C the lowest.

A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 to 115 mph
C - Between 85 to 100 mph
Treadwear: 780
Traction Asphalt - gForce
AA - Above 0.54
A - Above 0.47
B - Above 0.38
C - Less Than 0.38
A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 and 115 mph
C - Between 85 and 100 mph

Drive / Ride Performance Characteristics

All tires have the following six performance characteristics, divided into three sets of trade-offs. In most cases, a tire may perform excellently in one characteristic but only standard in the other.
Excellent Ride Comfort & Excellent Handling
Handling: Get stiff side wall for precise steering and cornering but settle for a firm ride with increased road noise.
Ride Comfort: Enjoy a quiet, smooth ride but lose some cornering ability.
Standard Treadwear & Excellent Traction
Traction: Stop faster in wet conditions but expect a shorter tread life.
Treadwear: Get long, uniform wear across your tread pattern but expect less traction in wet conditions.
Standard Low Rolling Resistance & Standard High Speed Performance
High-Speed Performance: Get increased performance at higher speeds but sacrifice some fuel economy.
Low Rolling Resistance: Enjoy improved fuel efficiency but expect less high-speed cornering ability.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Expected more. Put these tires on the wife's 2012 Honda CRV and the ride was nice, the traction was great, and road noise was better, however, the gas mileage was reduced by 4 mpg and this is not acceptable. Kept them 3 weeks and 800 miles and mpg drop did not improve, so I had to take them back and switched to the Michelin Defenders. I truly don't know why the drop in mpg's, but it didn't make financial sense to keep the tires. August 16, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by great tires and made in USA Tires give a quiet ride and provide great handling in wet and dry conditions. Haven't had snow yet (it's only Aug.) August 16, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by These tires are very smooth. The tires are great!! July 30, 2014
Rated 3 out of 5 by not sure yet I am trying these tires because the price was good and reviews were respectable. I had a real good and pricy set of Good Years on my All Wheel Drive van. I rotated them and took care of them but two of them wore down and the other two had over half the tread left. Toyota requires you replace all 4 if there is a differenc of more than 3/32 so i replaced all 4. I thought these would be good for the price and if i have to replace 4 again it's not as expensive. I was asked to give this review but after just 2 weeks with them i can't give a true review. I do like them so far but will report after about 30k or 40k. I will rate with stars and comments at that time. July 25, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great product...not so great experience I needed to replace the tires on my 2013 Dodge crossover at 53,000 miles. I did a lot of research and checked out a number of tires on the PepBoys website. I placed the order and scheduled an appointment. When I got to the shop, I presented my receipt and asked that prior to putting the tires on the car, they show them to me. The guy brought out 4 tires. They were not the Coopers, but the Definity tires. I told him that they were not the tires I ordered and he asked me if I had "looked at the Definity tires online." I told him I looked at about a dozen different options online, but clearly ordered the (more expensive) Cooper CS4, with one of the reasons due to the tread and the 80,000 mile warranty. (And the receipt clearly stated Cooper CS4) He checked the computer and said he wasn't sure they had the CS4s. I asked him to go to the back and check. He came back with the Coopers. The tires were put on the car and the tech then came in to tell me the job was done. I asked him if he calibrated the tire pressure- he assured me he did - 35 lbs. all around. I took my receipt and got in my car. I used my electronic sensor in the car and found tire pressure ranging from 35-40 (each tire different.) I figured I could take care of that myself. I also have an app that keeps track of my vehicle maintenance, gas costs and mileage. I went to add this purchase and noticed (while still in the parking lot) that the receipt indicated I had 25,100 miles on the car, when, in fact, I had 53,000 miles. I went back into the store to have that changed immediately. Had I not noticed it, I would have lost about 28,000 miles of the warranty. Nobody could explain the error. Here's my biggest concern: I'm a woman. And I know "the business" because I'm an avid classic car collector. But I have to wonder if there's that presumption that a "girl won't know the difference." This girl did. Happy with the CS4s - although they are a little noisy at 65-70mph (it's like a little reminder that you may get pulled over) but not happy that had I not been on my game, I could have ended up with Definity tires and a short-term warranty. Rated 5 out of 5 by Makes my old car ride like new There's complete silence in my car and the car rides smoothly side I got these tires. July 22, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by 100K on these Tires Will most likely get another set. Car is a 09 Camry and gets used about 25K per year. Original stock tires only lasted about 50K, but these were double that. Nice ride, didn't have any issues. Great value and great cost per mile. May 13, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by smooth ride the ride is smooth. handles road very good. January 18, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Product had 80k mileage warranty I like what I bought. I feel safe. I hate buying tires. Look at your car before and afterward. I don't see a difference. All I know is that I am safer than I was before I changed tires. November 26, 2013
Rated 1 out of 5 by Awful The location I went to didn't have the tires in stock and it took them three hours to figure it out. Tried to sell me $2500 worth of repairs though...and that only took 30 minutes. Will never use Pep Boys again. November 25, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by So far, very pleased. I've only had these tires a short time, so I cannot say anything about the longevity which is an important feature in my opinion and one of the reasons I bought these tires as they have a 80,000 mile tread warranty. The first thing I noticed about these tires was how well they grip the road. Others rated them well on wet roads, so I have been waiting for some rain to see for myself how they handled. Well, we got some rain, and these tires do grip the road very good in the rain. Now, let me just say, I am a conservative driver, so I don't take the turns like Mario Andretti in the rain. As far as snow. If that happens, my car will stay in the garage. November 6, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent tires Good handling and quieter ride. November 1, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Very Quite Tires I purchased these tires for my 2010 Nissan Murano. They are very quite and excellent tires. They seem to handle better than the factory tires that were already on the car when I purchased it. The rebates were great too. I got over $200 in rebates. October 22, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by So far so good These tires are quiet which I love! So far so good I have only had them since late September. October 20, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Tires look and feel great for the price, however, it's only been 3 weeks. A review was requested from me at this time. This is a very preliminary review and presently I have owned the tires for barely 3 weeks on a 2007 Honda CR-V, 4WD, (size 225-65/17). I have not yet drove through a heavy rain or any winter conditions. Assesment is is for dry pavement only. These tires replaced a set of Firestone Destination LE's and so far have proven satisfactory in ride comfort and noise level. They are slightly quieter than the Firestones, but that is subject to change as the tires wear. I am a moderate sensible driver, and dry traction, cornering, and braking is as expected. After a full season (about 15,000 miles), a more comprehensive follow up should be made to include treadwear and seasonal performance. My experience with PepBoys was fine as far as the installation was concerned. Tires were balaced properly (tested at 80 - 85 mph momentarily, no undue vibrations were felt). When I received the vehicle, the tires were somewhat over inflated, which is frequently the case when I have tires installed. I adjusted the pressure to Honda's recommendation. I was very happy with the PepBoys price along with the on-line discout and subsequent rebates which are currently in processing. Note that I omitted rankings for wet traction, treadwear, and durability, as these factors cannot be evaluated in such a short time. A subsequent follow-up review is necessary. October 9, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent value Good tires, made in USA, swift service, best price (after Pep Boys and Cooper rebates, which are still "processing"). October 2, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Outstanding Value We purchased the Cooper CS4 for our BMW X3 and are very satisfied with our decision. The ride quality and responsiveness of these tires are excellent. The tire also has great wet weather grip and we are looking forward to the winter. September 30, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Nice These are my first set of replacement tires on my Challenger. Nice ride and handling, Hopefully they hold up. Rebates were a plus! September 28, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Tires Jeremy was especially nice and had my car ready in a timely manner. I was able to go on line for rebate, but have been able to find the $60 Cooper rebate. Please advise. September 25, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great tires! This is my second set of Cooper CS4 Touring 92H 60,000 mile tires. These tires are quiet, comfortable and have very good traction in snow and rain. I had one set of the Cooper CS4 Touring 91T 80,000 mile tires. Good tires as well but the traction was not good at all in snow and would spin sometimes on wet pavement. September 22, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Good tires, handle the road well For the price, these tires handle the road well, wet and dry surface. Time will tell how they handle in snow and ice. And how long they last September 1, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by product is great. The service, not so much! product is as advertised. Very happy. However, I made an app the week before. It took 4 (four) hours and 20 (twenty) min to install these tires and do a very straight forward front brake work. Simple rotor trim and install brake pads. I will probably be looking elsewhere for future parts, tools and service. Just kept getting a sorry it is taking so long. I spent over 1k. And the rebates. It will take up to three months. We have 5 cars in our family. I went to NTB yesterday. Four tires and front and back brake repair and only took 1 hour and 33 min and got an instant rebate. Buy three and get the fourth free right then. Still have two cars that will need work in the coming year. August 22, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Product had great features I had bought Cooper tire for another car and was extremly pleased with them. The ride is smooth and they are great on wet ground. In reading the reviews for this Cooper tire, I found the same great features. Best deal. Great Price. July 29, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by 58,000 miles so far CS4 Cooper tires. I drive a 180 miles round trip commute daily. Bought these in March 2012, and I am currently at the end of their life expectancy on my 2010 Sonata GLS (rated 60k for my car, currently July 2013). They handled great in water and snow, noise level was low, just had them rotated (regularly done every 6k) and they still have 6/32 and 5/32. I highly recommend these for wear and durability. I have had no issues with these tires. Driving habits, a few miles over the limit, but I don't peel out, or take corners at 90 MPH, but I don't "baby" them either, so I would consider it normal wear and tear. My review and "Pros" are based on this. HIGHLY recommended. Price shop, you may find a better deal, but this was my best possibility when i got these. This tire is at the top of my list for contenders for my replacements in a few months. I'll compare price to possible mileage for best results. If they are close, this is the winner already. July 18, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent Tires!!!! Dan from the Auburn, Maine Pep Boys recommended these to replace the original tires on my 1984 Jaguar VDP. I'm very glad I listened. They deliver a very smooth ride, are quiet, super traction, and even look great on the car. They have been on the jag for a full year of summer and winter driving to and from work, which is over an hour each way. So when it came time to replace the tires on the Hyundai Sonata, it was a definite no brainer. I didn't even look at another tire. These tires are well worth the money and the 80,000 mile tread wear is awesome. Have tried many different tire brands over the years, but this one takes the cake.... July 10, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Quiet & Smooth Riding Tire I'm very happy with these tires. Very quiet and smooth riding tire. July 3, 2013
Rated 3 out of 5 by Too Soon To Tell Just got these tires. June 11, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great tires. Tires are great so far (three weeks), tires were rated as one of the best for wear, road noise and wet weather and are certainly living up to that. June 9, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by 4 new tires Service department was great to work with June 3, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Overall Good Tire Good tire, right away we noticed the great traction compare to the tires that came with the vehicle when purchased new. June 3, 2013
