Load Range

Safety Rating is a combination of two values: Load Index and Speed Rating for P-Metric and Euro Metric tire sizes; and Load Range and Speed Rating in the case of heavy duty LT (light truck) sizes.

Speed Rating is based on the speed that the tire is designed to be driven at for extended periods of time. All tires in the in the U.S. are designed to maintain legal U.S. speed limits. The speed rating of tires must match the maximum driving speed of the vehicle.

Load Index is used on P metric and Euro Metric sized tires and denotes a tire's load-carrying capacity at a specified inflation pressure. The load index is represented by a number, the higher the Load Index Value the greater the load the tire can safely carry. Vehicle manufacturers recommend a maximum load capacity based on a recommended minimum load index.

Tire Class

Tire Class reflects how the tire will be used. There are four major categories: All-Season, Max Performance, Summer-Only and Winter-Use.

All-Season tires are suitable for year-round driving in all weather conditions.

Summer-Only & Max Performance tires are specifically designed for high-performance driving. Tire compound, tread design and speed ratings all combine to hug the road and maintain grip. Summer tires by nature are not ideal for winter driving due to lack of siding to grip winter roads.

Winter-Use tires have tread compounds and patterns that are specially designed for grip on snowy or icy road surfaces. They are not suitable for year-round use. The rubber compound used will wear more quickly on dry, summer roads. It is recommended that winter tires are fitted as a complete set to avoid potential handling issues.

Tread Type

Tread Type is an important consideration when choosing a tire. There are four main types: Passenger, Highway, All-Terrain and Mud-Terrain.

Passenger denotes a tread that is suitable for normal use, a good all-round tread for normal driving.

Highway is a tread type unique to SUV and truck tires. The tread is optimized for normal everyday driving on paved surfaces. These tires can be driven off pavement, but are not ideally suited for off road traction. Highway tread patterns deliver a quiet ride.

For light trucks and specialty vehicles, All-Terrain tread types provide better off-road traction than standard highway truck tires. There more aggressive tread tends to be less quiet on paved roads. All Terrain tires are suitable for everyday use.

Mud-Terrain treads are specifically designed with wider tread blocks and higher void ratios to gain traction in off-road conditions. Mud Terrain tires can generate higher noise levels and tend to carry lower mileage warranties than other tread designs.

UTQG - Uniform Tire Quality Grade

UTQG (Uniform Tire Quality Grade) is made up of three values: treadwear, traction and temperature.

Treadwear is a relative numeric score, based on manufacturer tests, showing how well a tire can be expected to wear compared to other tires. A higher score means a tire could be expected to wear better.

Traction measures the tire's ability to stop a vehicle on wet roads. It doesn't reflect a tire's acceleration, cornering, or hydroplaning performance. Traction grades range from AA (highest) to C (lowest).

Temperature grades the tire's ability to withstand heat build-up, with A being the highest grade and C the lowest.

A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 to 115 mph
C - Between 85 to 100 mph
Treadwear: 480
Traction Asphalt - gForce
AA - Above 0.54
A - Above 0.47
B - Above 0.38
C - Less Than 0.38
A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 and 115 mph
C - Between 85 and 100 mph

Drive / Ride Performance Characteristics

All tires have the following six performance characteristics, divided into three sets of trade-offs. In most cases, a tire may perform excellently in one characteristic but only standard in the other.
Standard Ride Comfort & Standard Handling
Handling: Get stiff side wall for precise steering and cornering but settle for a firm ride with increased road noise.
Ride Comfort: Enjoy a quiet, smooth ride but lose some cornering ability.
Standard Treadwear & Standard Traction
Traction: Stop faster in wet conditions but expect a shorter tread life.
Treadwear: Get long, uniform wear across your tread pattern but expect less traction in wet conditions.
Standard Low Rolling Resistance & Standard High Speed Performance
High-Speed Performance: Get increased performance at higher speeds but sacrifice some fuel economy.
Low Rolling Resistance: Enjoy improved fuel efficiency but expect less high-speed cornering ability.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Real good tire I replaced a set of the Rugged Terrain 2 plys with some 10 plys this year and I am real happy with them. My overall MPG dropped by 2, but that was expected going to a heavier tire. July 22, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great tires ! Bought these to replace some smaller truck tires on my Jeep. I'll be doing quite a bit of off-roading with these tire in the near future and appreciate the tread designed for that. Meanwhile, they are just as quiet as the tires they replaced on the highway and around town. Handle very well, but then I'm a long time BF Goodrich fan ! I know I'll get a lot of great miles from them ! July 21, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by rugged terrain Just bought these tires. I have a 2000 F250 and tow a 24' enclosed trailer. I don't do any off roading with this truck but just like the look of a off road truck. These tires ride very well and are not noisey at all. At this point I'm very happy with the look these tire add to the truck and the ride. July 14, 2013
Rated 3 out of 5 by Extremely Noisey!!!! These tires have been on my Ford Escape for 2 days and I already want them off. The noise is almost unbearable at any speed over about 40 mph. The ride and handling seem to be OK. I replaced Long Trails with these. Big Big mistake. They might be OK for off road use but definately not highway usage. I have already noticed a slight drop in gas mileage also. July 11, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best Tires For 4WD Those wheels are the best I have bought, they have good traction on dry and wet road and off-road are excellent, on the road do not make noise. They are the best tires they had in my 4WD vehicle July 3, 2013
Rated 2 out of 5 by Loud I bought these tires to replace the stock Rugged Trail tires on my Toyota Tacoma 4x4. These tires are way too noisy, almost as noisy as the BGF Mud Terrain tires on my Jeep. I would not buy them again. These tires are used mostly on road with some off roading. I am rather disappointed especially after spending a lot of money on these tires. June 27, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Good in mud...heavy rain Great tire for mud deep thread...also was in a heavy down pour these tires gripped the road no hydroplaning . As for noise no problem here driving at highway speeds. June 15, 2013
Rated 1 out of 5 by Poor replacement Well these tires look great but don't let that fool you they ride and sound horrible on the road. These were recommended by auth retailer for a warranty replacement on our suv. Less than 400 miles there on second balance and still ride extremely loud and vibrate, our family is extremely disappointed all around and cant enjoy the once quiet ride we had. June 7, 2013
Rated 2 out of 5 by Looks good, but HORRIBLE noise. First I would like to start with the things I like about the tire. I had the dealer install these when I purchased the vehicle. I purchased a Honda Ridgeline and I was given a list to choose from and having the BFG All Terrains in the past I thought these would be great for me. They look awesome, and i have gone through some pretty good snow with them. Even a little bit of mud and they were great. I have even had 1600lbs of stone in the bed and they felt nice and sturdy. However, the noise is horrible. After the first 4000 miles I tried to rotate them, and the noise was worse. Now I am no stranger to noise, and in the past running mud terrains on some trucks I've had it wasnt a huge deal. But this Honda I was not looking for any noise. I traded in a half ton Silverado with the All terrain's and they were 10 times quieter. I have a hard time having a conversation in the cab, thats how loud they are. I will not be rotating them again due to this and will just wear them out as is. Its ashame too, because I loved how they looked and they had a claim of low noise. I guess next time I will stick with the all terrains which were silent for me. May 27, 2013
Rated 1 out of 5 by Too Noisy I have the P series on a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer. The tires perform well in rain and snow and seem to be wearing well. The big disappointment is with the road noise. Above 45 mph they produce a terribly annoying, irritating, high-pitched whine. The original Rugged Trail T/As were much quieter and performed just as well. I will not buy these again. May 26, 2013
Rated 2 out of 5 by Great tire but terrible on Noise Bought these tires to replace the stock Goodyear Fronteras on my wife's 2011 Honda Pilot. Although these tires feel solid and trustworthy, however, I DO NOT recommend them if their sole use will be city and highway driving; they're extremely NOISY... my wife isn't happy and that's not a good thing... We should've bought the Rugged Trail instead... May 16, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by everything you need in a tire I live on a dirt road but still drive 30 plus miles to work one way so i need it all and this tire is it! i have a two wheel drive so i need something that i can depend on to grab and keep pushing in the dirt and mud. this tire has never let me down and im hooked on them. April 28, 2013
Rated 1 out of 5 by I will not buy these tires again I was very disappointed with these tires. I have run All-terrain T/A's in the past, and they were always very quiet and all around great. I bought these tires for my wife's SUV, and I was very surprised how noisy they were unlike what was advertised online. April 20, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Good all around tire. I do it all in my f150 4x4 from the mud to the black top. They are very good all around tires. I have nothing bad to say about the tires just make sure you rotate as needed. March 19, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Go, Do, Play Great overall tire!! I have had these on my silverado for about 8000 miles and little tread wear! At rotation they had lost no balance! Love the snow and mud capabilities and dry traction of the tire. Not fond of the wet/ice traction but it is much better than my previous sets of tires. I travel both country, city, and highway with these tires and admit they have a "beefy" look but maintain a smooth ride and minimal road noise. Several of my friends and relatives have switched to these tires also and have given me the same feedback about them. looking forward to see how long they wear! March 6, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Very Good tire Love these tires!!! I had to get new tires because I had a blow out, so I bought these. I previously had Goodyear tires and wont ever buy them again. The tread on Goodyear's don't even compare to the tread on these tires. These BFGoodrich Tires were very good in the mud and look great on the road. The only Con I found was that my gas mileage went down just a bit. I'm guessing it's because they're a bit wider then stock tires but not by much. But over all look good. These tires do produce some noise but I personally like that driving down the road. I would definitely purchase these tires again and recommend them to anyone that wants a better look, tire performance, long lasting, and for a little off-roading. February 26, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by 35,000 Mile review These came stock on my 2012 Tacoma 4x4 TRD package. Overall I am pretty darn happy with them and will likely buy a second pair. They show a little more wear than I hoped at 35,000 and expect I will need to replace them at 45k (I don't like running too far below the tread wear bars). When they were less than 25k the off-road was very good for my use (muddy dirt tracks to fishing holes) at 35k they are not so good in the mud but fine in dry conditions. Similarly the road noise when new was barely noticeable but has gotten worse as they age. Still not a big deal though. Mileage is very dependent on air pressure on these tires, 34lbs seems to work best for me. February 13, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Very nice tire I had A/T-KO's and now switched to these tires. They are incredably quite and comfortable to ride on and still have an agressive snow pattern. I would have given 5 stars but ther isn't a tire that grips in the snow like the A/T KO's, wears like the Long Trail, and rides like these Rugged Terrain's for trucks. I would buy thse tires over the A/T KO's again since the grip in the snow is the only (slight) downside between the two. I haven't owned them very long, but so far I'm very pleased! February 10, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Tire I have a Ram 2500 Cummins Diesel. These tires went on 40k miles ago and I easily have another 10k left in them. There is no noticable noise, not sure what everyone else is hearing, and fantastic tread wear. (I rotate every 5k) No question for me, I will buy another set when it's time. January 22, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best tire purchased I have had these tires for about a year and a half; 20,000 miles. Since I have put them on, I have been on two road trips to various national parks, and they have been the best tires I have ever owned. They give a very comfortable ride, VERY little noise if any, great wear, very attractive tire tread. I will definately buy another set when they are needed. December 29, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Tahoe + Rugged Terrrain's= awesome I got rid of the horrid stock tires, and replaced them with Rugged Terrain's. What a great tire!! I wanted to get a good tire, before the snow started flying.I have had them on my '12 Tahoe for 4 months now. I got the Rugged Terrain's. I LOVE these tires; they are very grippy & hold the road. I am currently living in WA. State, and we get a good amount of snow & ice, and these tires handle it with aplomb!! I had to make an emergency stop on a snowy road, due to a deer, and they were amazing. I am very impressed with these tires. I would highly recommend these tires. And YES, I would buy them again. December 29, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Simply Awesome! I searched forever trying to find just the right tire to meet my needs. What I was looking for was something that was smooth on the highway yet rugged enough when I needed it. This tire has met all my needs and exceeded my expectations. I hardly hear them on the highway or on the streets in town. I'm an avid outdoorsman and have put them to the test already - performance was awesome! It recently snowed (which we rarely see snow) and they performed great as well! My father was needing new tires and he was so impressed that he is buying the same tire for his truck. Overall, I could not be happier!!!! December 26, 2012
Rated 3 out of 5 by Good tires, Road noise awful. I recently purchased these tires and have driven 5000 miles on Highway, Lt. Off-Road. I have to say everything is good so far. Road noise thats another issue. They seem to growl at highway speeds, not unbearable but annoying. Overall good tires. December 19, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Tire I have about 1500 miles on these on my 2WD F-150. I live 2 miles off the black top. It is remarkable how quiet these tires are on the highway. I anticipated much more buzz, but they hardly make any noise. When it gets wet the clay roads are extremely slippery. It has rained finally and in the mud they give me the traction I need. I am very pleased with how these perform. December 17, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Nice Aggresive Look with a Smooth Ride. I put these tires on a 2005 Jeep Cherokee and they gave it such an aggresive look! I am sold on these tires. The road noise isn't bad at all as I do drive on the highway often and haven't had any issues. I would reccomend these tires to anyone. A friend of mine just actually bought a new silverado and after seeing my tires he is taking his brand new Michellens off and getting the same tire I have. VERY SATISFIED. well worth the money December 9, 2012
Rated 1 out of 5 by Extremely Noisy I have about 12,000 miles on these tires and can't believe how noisy they have become. They growl at lower speeds and howl over 50 mph. The funny thing is that this noise just started after they had about 10k on them. They look good and work well on wet pavement, but I'm about ready to start using ear plugs. Very disappointing. December 9, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Getting ready to purchase a forth set I first bought these tires for my wife's Yukon. I was so impressed with their longevity and performance I put a set on my Silverado and I'm buying a third set for my wife's truck this month. Very good product for the $$$ December 5, 2012
Rated 2 out of 5 by Too Noisy for Me I just put a set of (4) new tires on my Toyota 4Runner. These tires have less than 500 miles on them, and I really do not want them on my truck. First off, they are VERY noisy! I like a nice quiet ride, and this tire definitely does not deliver that no matter what BFGoodrich says. Second, I had to made a low-speed avoidance maneuver at around 30 MPH on a DRY road, and the back end of my 4Runner slid out from behind me and set off my ABS warning. The tires squeeled like crazy. This tire may be okay on other vehicles, but not my 2003 4Runner Sport with all-wheel drive. I simply do not feel safe with them on my truck. I should have gone with the Michelin LTX M/S2 tires instead, but they cost a small fortune. December 3, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by An After The Fact Review... The tires. I have now, are the 5th set of BFG T/A Tires. I have never bought the same make of tires, until I found these. I'm sold on 'em. December 1, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by More Than Pleased I purchased with two determining factors: price and presummed road noise (or lack thereof w/ these). These were priced a little lower than the All-Terrains (had AT's on my '94 YJ) and I wanted as little road noise as possible; these are on my daily driver. Very quiet on the road and have worn slowly for the 18k I have had them. They are on my '10 Jeep JK, which is set up as an expedition vehicle. I have had these in rain, snow, trail and small rocky trails and they have performed extremely well. The JK has LT285 75R16's and I am about to put the P235 75R15's on my Bantum M100.
