Load Range

Safety Rating is a combination of two values: Load Index and Speed Rating for P-Metric and Euro Metric tire sizes; and Load Range and Speed Rating in the case of heavy duty LT (light truck) sizes.

Speed Rating is based on the speed that the tire is designed to be driven at for extended periods of time. All tires in the in the U.S. are designed to maintain legal U.S. speed limits. The speed rating of tires must match the maximum driving speed of the vehicle.

Load Index is used on P metric and Euro Metric sized tires and denotes a tire's load-carrying capacity at a specified inflation pressure. The load index is represented by a number, the higher the Load Index Value the greater the load the tire can safely carry. Vehicle manufacturers recommend a maximum load capacity based on a recommended minimum load index.

Tire Class

Tire Class reflects how the tire will be used. There are four major categories: All-Season, Max Performance, Summer-Only and Winter-Use.

All-Season tires are suitable for year-round driving in all weather conditions.

Summer-Only & Max Performance tires are specifically designed for high-performance driving. Tire compound, tread design and speed ratings all combine to hug the road and maintain grip. Summer tires by nature are not ideal for winter driving due to lack of siding to grip winter roads.

Winter-Use tires have tread compounds and patterns that are specially designed for grip on snowy or icy road surfaces. They are not suitable for year-round use. The rubber compound used will wear more quickly on dry, summer roads. It is recommended that winter tires are fitted as a complete set to avoid potential handling issues.

Tread Type

Tread Type is an important consideration when choosing a tire. There are four main types: Passenger, Highway, All-Terrain and Mud-Terrain.

Passenger denotes a tread that is suitable for normal use, a good all-round tread for normal driving.

Highway is a tread type unique to SUV and truck tires. The tread is optimized for normal everyday driving on paved surfaces. These tires can be driven off pavement, but are not ideally suited for off road traction. Highway tread patterns deliver a quiet ride.

For light trucks and specialty vehicles, All-Terrain tread types provide better off-road traction than standard highway truck tires. There more aggressive tread tends to be less quiet on paved roads. All Terrain tires are suitable for everyday use.

Mud-Terrain treads are specifically designed with wider tread blocks and higher void ratios to gain traction in off-road conditions. Mud Terrain tires can generate higher noise levels and tend to carry lower mileage warranties than other tread designs.

UTQG - Uniform Tire Quality Grade

UTQG (Uniform Tire Quality Grade) is made up of three values: treadwear, traction and temperature.

Treadwear is a relative numeric score, based on manufacturer tests, showing how well a tire can be expected to wear compared to other tires. A higher score means a tire could be expected to wear better.

Traction measures the tire's ability to stop a vehicle on wet roads. It doesn't reflect a tire's acceleration, cornering, or hydroplaning performance. Traction grades range from AA (highest) to C (lowest).

Temperature grades the tire's ability to withstand heat build-up, with A being the highest grade and C the lowest.

A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 to 115 mph
C - Between 85 to 100 mph
Treadwear: 400
Traction Asphalt - gForce
AA - Above 0.54
A - Above 0.47
B - Above 0.38
C - Less Than 0.38
A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 and 115 mph
C - Between 85 and 100 mph

Drive / Ride Performance Characteristics

All tires have the following six performance characteristics, divided into three sets of trade-offs. In most cases, a tire may perform excellently in one characteristic but only standard in the other.
Standard Ride Comfort & Standard Handling
Handling: Get stiff side wall for precise steering and cornering but settle for a firm ride with increased road noise.
Ride Comfort: Enjoy a quiet, smooth ride but lose some cornering ability.
Standard Treadwear & Standard Traction
Traction: Stop faster in wet conditions but expect a shorter tread life.
Treadwear: Get long, uniform wear across your tread pattern but expect less traction in wet conditions.
Standard Low Rolling Resistance & Standard High Speed Performance
High-Speed Performance: Get increased performance at higher speeds but sacrifice some fuel economy.
Low Rolling Resistance: Enjoy improved fuel efficiency but expect less high-speed cornering ability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Great In 2004 I purchased a 2004 Ford F-250 Super Duty Crew Cab 4x4 with a diesel engine. This truck came equipped with BF Goodrich Rugged Trail T/A in LT265/75R16. This vehicle in itself is heavy and I also pull a 30' fifth wheel when vacationing. I drive 60 miles a day to and from work and much of it is in 4 wheel drive. As of today I have 105,338 miles on these tires and believe they still have 25% of the tread left. I will be replacing them soon because I live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where the winters are hard and long, old saying is 9 months of winter and 3 months of poor sledding. Thank you for a great product, I will be looking for another BF Goodrich product for a replacement. December 17, 2011
Rated 1 out of 5 by Very disapointed! These tires were the OEM tires that came on my 2010 Tundra. Right away the day I took ownership of my new truck I knew these tires would be a problem when I hydroplaned repeatedly on the wet freeway. The tires do have good traction on dry/damp pavement but are pretty much worthless in any other conditions. After 25K miles there at 3/32 and I'm having to replace them. That's less than half of what they were rated for! December 9, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Work well for the intended purpose These are the OEM tires for my 2007 Toyota Tacoma 4X4 Crew Cab. Some reviewers don't like these tires for off-road, deep snow, or mud. These tires are not designed as true off-road tires, BF Goodrich makes other tires better suited for those applications. This on-road tire is a compromise for occasional off-road use and if you understand that, they are good tires. I have a very steep 200 ft. driveway since my house is on a hill in the mountains and even in over 12 inches of snow I haven't been stopped. This past week during hunting season I had to drive off-road to retrieve a deer and had no problems. If you don't know how to drive in snow or off-road there isn't a tire made that will help you. These tires are very quiet compared to off-road tires and wear is respectable. I'm getting over 35,000 miles a set, primarily on-road miles. December 4, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by I would purchase another set. The tires were original equipment on my 2007 Toyota Tundra Crew Max Limited. Great wear. I put 60,000 miles on the original set. The tires rode and handled great. No problems and never a flat. Therefore, I replaced the OE with the exact same tire. November 24, 2011
Rated 1 out of 5 by Do not buy I am a contractor and drive in many condition. These tire handle fine on the highway. However they are about worthless in any other condition. In snow, mud or wet grass they do not have any traction. The tread fills up and you have slicks. I am not impressed with the tread life. I have had these on two vehicles booth dodge 2500. One was a diesel and the other gas. Booth trucks had worn tires within 15,000 miles and needed to be replaced. That was with rotating them every time oil was changed. Every 4 to 5 thousand miles. I you plan on driving in any condition other than highway chose another tire. I don't expect great wear with a 2500 series truck but i have had much better luck with other brand tires. Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent wear and Ride 2500 dodge ram 4x4 diesel 4dr. These tires have 45,000 and still have 45% tread left. I believe they are partly responsible for my good fuel mileage also. I have Never had a tire on a Pickup last like these. Great in heavy rain. No complaints in snow. My off road is occasional and I they have performed well till I get in mud then they just get me by but I have never been stuck either. If you don't have a lot of mud these are the tire. If I had lots of snow I might go with K/O's but this one is doing very well. I will buy these again, just sorry i didn't find these decades ago. November 14, 2011
Rated 2 out of 5 by in two minds i have a 2008 Toyota Tundra it came with Goodrich Rugged Trail tires i have just over 30,000 miles and 3 of the tires need replacing i am triy to figure if i should put these tires a my truck or look for something with better milage. November 8, 2011
Rated 4 out of 5 by these tires came on tacoma these came on my new 2007tacoma i have 40,000 miles now and there still good, maybe five to ten thousand more to go . they handled good and seem to be a strong tire and rated at 118 mile per hour. but i owuld like to get even better but the prices are to steep . these my be the best for the price September 20, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by AWESOME!!! Best set of tires I have ever had. I have 100,000 on the tires and they have many more miles left on them. I have a 2500 Dodge Ramp Quad Cab that spends most of its time towing a 3 horse slant gooseneck trailer to barrel races, horse shows and back country trail rides. This truck is also the family vehicle so it gets all kinds of use other than hwy miles. I have never in my life had a set of tires come anywhere close to lasting this long. This is the only tire I will buy to replace these and I'm sharing my story with all my friends and family. September 8, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by best tires I've ever had! Rugged Trail TAs came standard on the 03 Excursion. The powerstroke diesel makes 325 HP and 545 FP torque stock. I reprogrammed the ECM and TCM for high performance and I pull a 8000# cargo trailer and 30' travel trailer. This is no grocery gitr. After 85K I bought another set. These have 97K and have another 5-15K left. I am pricing another set for this winter. I want to find them in a larger diameter because 265's look ridiculously small for this size SUV. These tires are a great value, don't let anybody tell you otherwise. Joe U. Green Bay September 1, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Incredible Tire I don't know how, but after my factory originals came off my 2002 Avalanche, I tried these on a lark. 60,000 miles later, I'm on my second set. My gross load, 12 times a year is 15,000 lbs. towing hay. Never a problem , even in 110 degree heat. Great tire on non paved road in summer and darn good in winter mud. BFG is all I trust for the entire families vehicles- no kidding. I wish they could make a tire which would keep the dirt outside where it belongs. Thank you B.F. Goodrich August 31, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Tires Had these stock on the 2008 dodge truck 2500, I have gone over 65,000 miles on the originals. Great grip and longevity. August 30, 2011
Rated 1 out of 5 by Less than favourable I live and work in Canada's North. I'm lucky if 50% of my driving is on paved roads, and I consider the fact that these tires came from the factory as part of the "off road package" absolutely laughable. I can't count the amount of times that my 3/4 ton Ram has had to be pulled out of a soft snow covered shoulder beside the road... or a wet grassy lawn... or heaven forbid a sandy work site. It's embarrassing. When I DO venture south and finally get to a highway, they perform adequately. But for what I require out of a truck tire, they are, quite frankly, dismal. August 12, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great tires, 85,000 and still going! Tires were OEM on my 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 SLT, they are still running great at 85,000 miles. They are top line tires! July 9, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent tire...on my second set! Excellent all around tire for highway, road, trail, snow/ice, etc.! In my location, the tires are constantly exposed to extreme sunlight so my first set succumbed to sun damage after 6 years - well before the tread life was up. They have handled and held up so well I bought the same tires again. July 7, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by First set lasted 96000 ... First set lasted 96000 miles, The 2nd set had 90000 miles when I sold the truck, these tire were great on/off the road and driving in the rain/snow. I'am looking to replace my Goodyear wrangler 31x10.5x15 on my 89 toyota 4x4 truck with the rugged trails, but found that these tires are not being made anymore, To bad, these were great tires. Rated 4 out of 5 by These Rugged Trail T/A's ... These Rugged Trail T/A's were put on my car by accident. I originally ordered the Long Trail T/A's for my Ford Explorer. My dealer installed the wrong tire, after looking at the tire installed on my car, I decided to give them a try instead of having them removed and the correct tires installed. I was pleasantly surprised by the quietness of the ride they gave. I was worried as the Rugged Trails have a more aggresive tread than the Long Trails. Overall I am very pleased with these tires and would recommend them to my family and friends and other BF Goodrich customers. November 23, 2010
