Load Range

Safety Rating is a combination of two values: Load Index and Speed Rating for P-Metric and Euro Metric tire sizes; and Load Range and Speed Rating in the case of heavy duty LT (light truck) sizes.

Speed Rating is based on the speed that the tire is designed to be driven at for extended periods of time. All tires in the in the U.S. are designed to maintain legal U.S. speed limits. The speed rating of tires must match the maximum driving speed of the vehicle.

Load Index is used on P metric and Euro Metric sized tires and denotes a tire's load-carrying capacity at a specified inflation pressure. The load index is represented by a number, the higher the Load Index Value the greater the load the tire can safely carry. Vehicle manufacturers recommend a maximum load capacity based on a recommended minimum load index.

Tire Class

Tire Class reflects how the tire will be used. There are four major categories: All-Season, Max Performance, Summer-Only and Winter-Use.

All-Season tires are suitable for year-round driving in all weather conditions.

Summer-Only & Max Performance tires are specifically designed for high-performance driving. Tire compound, tread design and speed ratings all combine to hug the road and maintain grip. Summer tires by nature are not ideal for winter driving due to lack of siding to grip winter roads.

Winter-Use tires have tread compounds and patterns that are specially designed for grip on snowy or icy road surfaces. They are not suitable for year-round use. The rubber compound used will wear more quickly on dry, summer roads. It is recommended that winter tires are fitted as a complete set to avoid potential handling issues.

Tread Type

Tread Type is an important consideration when choosing a tire. There are four main types: Passenger, Highway, All-Terrain and Mud-Terrain.

Passenger denotes a tread that is suitable for normal use, a good all-round tread for normal driving.

Highway is a tread type unique to SUV and truck tires. The tread is optimized for normal everyday driving on paved surfaces. These tires can be driven off pavement, but are not ideally suited for off road traction. Highway tread patterns deliver a quiet ride.

For light trucks and specialty vehicles, All-Terrain tread types provide better off-road traction than standard highway truck tires. There more aggressive tread tends to be less quiet on paved roads. All Terrain tires are suitable for everyday use.

Mud-Terrain treads are specifically designed with wider tread blocks and higher void ratios to gain traction in off-road conditions. Mud Terrain tires can generate higher noise levels and tend to carry lower mileage warranties than other tread designs.

UTQG - Uniform Tire Quality Grade

UTQG (Uniform Tire Quality Grade) is made up of three values: treadwear, traction and temperature.

Treadwear is a relative numeric score, based on manufacturer tests, showing how well a tire can be expected to wear compared to other tires. A higher score means a tire could be expected to wear better.

Traction measures the tire's ability to stop a vehicle on wet roads. It doesn't reflect a tire's acceleration, cornering, or hydroplaning performance. Traction grades range from AA (highest) to C (lowest).

Temperature grades the tire's ability to withstand heat build-up, with A being the highest grade and C the lowest.

A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 to 115 mph
C - Between 85 to 100 mph
Treadwear: 480
Traction Asphalt - gForce
AA - Above 0.54
A - Above 0.47
B - Above 0.38
C - Less Than 0.38
A - Over 115 mph
B - Between 100 and 115 mph
C - Between 85 and 100 mph

Drive / Ride Performance Characteristics

All tires have the following six performance characteristics, divided into three sets of trade-offs. In most cases, a tire may perform excellently in one characteristic but only standard in the other.
Standard Ride Comfort & Standard Handling
Handling: Get stiff side wall for precise steering and cornering but settle for a firm ride with increased road noise.
Ride Comfort: Enjoy a quiet, smooth ride but lose some cornering ability.
Standard Treadwear & Standard Traction
Traction: Stop faster in wet conditions but expect a shorter tread life.
Treadwear: Get long, uniform wear across your tread pattern but expect less traction in wet conditions.
Standard Low Rolling Resistance & Standard High Speed Performance
High-Speed Performance: Get increased performance at higher speeds but sacrifice some fuel economy.
Low Rolling Resistance: Enjoy improved fuel efficiency but expect less high-speed cornering ability.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Noisy tires Just bought these tires to replace my Rugged Trails. Its too bad BF Goodrich has discoutinued rugged trails and tried to replace them with the rugged Terrain. Tire noise on the way home from after installation was very disappointing. I would not buty them again October 24, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by They are on all 4x4's After our first set we have since put them on all our 4x4 vehicles. What we like most if they offer aggresive tread without the tire noise. We have found the wear to be very even, unlike some of the other manufacturer's aggressive tread tires. October 14, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great All-Around Manners I have these tires on my 03 Chevy 3/4 Ton Duramax. The truck is my all-around vehicle. I commute to work which these tires are great on the highway. They are quiet and have great handling characteristics. On the weekends I pull a 12k fifth wheel horse trailer and these tires in an E rating hold their own towing. So far they have handled the rain and light mud well. This winter will be the first with the tires so I will be back to comment to the snow traction. September 30, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by No Complaint's....... 2005 Grand Cherokee Rocky Mtn Edition These tires replaced the Kumho Solus KL21 which were a 60,000 mile tire and wore out with just a tad over 40,000. Rotated every 5-6 K miles, worn even, but no way would they ever made the 60,000 mile mark. Strictly street driven, kind of disappointing for Kumho's! As for these BF Goodrich Rugged Terrain T/A's, very aggressive looking tire, handling very well, and very little noise consumption. Hoping all goes well with these, a little to early to comment, but I think it will be ok. Definitely a nice tire for the price!!! Will comment back in the near future. Rated 5 out of 5 by Awesome Awesome tire a little road noise at higher speed , but great in wet weather. Love the way they handle and ride. This is my 4th set of BFG products way better than the OE tires on my 08 Chevy. August 23, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by These tires are GreatJohn Upgraded the wheels and tires on my 2002 GMC Sonoma. Great ride, low noise and good traction in all conditions. August 19, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by I would suggest these to anyone P275/55R20 for my 2011 GMC Denali 1500 truck. They look awesome and my truck still handles the same as when i had highway tires on. I live in the city and go to our farm, which this part of our state/country is known for it's really thick thick mud, and i have no problem getting traction in it. Also, they handle great on the snow and ice... (that just really depends on the driver though). Only thing is you can feel some bumps a little bit more on the highway, but with the denali package it's pretty hard to notice/complain and it really doesn't compare to the bumps you get with a true all terrain/mud terrain tire. Great product. July 31, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Tire I bought these tires for the looks because I didnt want to have a road tire on my ford f150 4x4 off road, so I picked these tires. I was alittle nervous they would be junk but they are on, I have taken them through mud, snow, sand, and everything in between. They have preformed well in all elements even just the everyday drive around town. I dont off road as much as I should, thats another reason I picked these tires and not the all ter. All in all a great tire for the looks and the drive. June 19, 2012
Rated 3 out of 5 by Perform great, sound awful These tires look great on my 2011 Grand Cherokee and they perform very well on wet and dry pavement as well as in light off-road use. However, the road noise makes me wish I'd bought something else. It gets progressively louder the faster I go until it reaches its peak at 50 mph, at which point it is droning at headache-inducing levels. The tires begin to quiet down again once you get above 55 mph and over about 63 mph they're as silent as highway tires. Unfortunately I do most of my on-road driving in the 40-55 range, which is where these produce the most noise on my vehicle. June 17, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by would by these tires again my toyota tocoma "2010"off road double cab came with 265-70-16 bfg,s rugged trails, lasted 50k miles and replaced with brg,s 275-70-16 rugged terrains, have over 8k miles and shows no signs of wear yet, has a road noise at around 40 mph then quiets after that. don,t air down as much in the sand as with the rugged trails. pulls good in sand, hope the same in snow. appears to be a keeper. drive the mountains some also. mileage hasn,t changed. June 10, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by I will never buy any other tire. One of the best tires I ever purchased. Lost a few mpg's but worth it. I haven't used them in snow yet but rain, sand and some simple off roading no complaints. Love my tires June 6, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by not a bad tire 2007 dodge ram 1500 . 20 inch tire .good on the highway . not bad in the mud . cant wait till the snows flys to try them in the snow . May 27, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by i would buy them again i got the tires back in may of 2011 and now i still have them but if your alignment is not fixed they will wear without you noticing a dang thing. but off roading it did the job. i mean there were some things i couldnt do just because of my jeep and tires were to small but i could do most things all my friends did but they had off road tires. it would just take me a little longer time. May 24, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Nice I just bought these a few days ago and have used them on the interstate and dirt roads already. I use them about 70% highway and 30% off road. They have impressed me so far. Tire size is(265/70/18) on a 2006 F150 super crew. This tire improved the ride and handling big time. The tire is quiet and impressive on wet roads. I want to try them out in a little mud after the rain stops to compare to my old bridgestone revos. They probably won't be as good in the mud as the revos but I will find out soon. March 2, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Truck Tire Excellent tire, beauitful tread, little or no highway noise, great for dirt roads, havent had time to try mudding but looks like it would be a good one for that, My truck would always get 17.5 before and 18.0 mpg after. i've put 7,000 miles and no treadway issues, excellent handling good stiff sidewall which is hard to find in a P rated tire. My only complaint is that I wish it was a soild white letter instead of outlined white letter. I've been a BFG guy for years now and love every product so far, never had and issues with them I average 60,000 miles a set. These tires are 235/75/R15 on a 1996 F-150 4X2 truck, with extended cab 302 V8. January 20, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Tire I work in the collision repair field, so I see and drive all types of vehicles with all types of tires. I talked with my clients that drove trucks and listened to what they said, and several had this tire and love it! I put a set on my personal 2010 Tundra and they drive great. I drove on the Interstate at 80 plus and there is no vibration at all. I like the look and feel and think that I made a good choice! January 15, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Awesome tire! I just bought these Rugged Terrain's for my '09 Chevy Silverado VMax 6.2L. These tires are well balanced, very quiet (for an all terrain) and have a nice aggressive sidewall look. Each tire only required 2-3 oz. of wheel weight which is great for a 275-60-20 "33 in." sized tire. I'm very impressed with the ride quality and handling as well. I've been a BFG guy in the past and now I remember why. I highly recommend this tire to any truck guy that wants a great tire for a great price with a 50k tread life warranty. Made in U.S.A.! Rated 5 out of 5 by Good Look Just got them installed today so this is all I know so far; 1st, They are NOT a noisy tire, I don't know why anyone would say they were, they are very quite on the road. 2nd, they are a very good looking tire, 3rd, they are priced right, I shopped around and saved buying them from a local guy (100 bucks cheaper than [@]) and they were very affordable compared to other brands. That's all I've got so far and I am very anxious to put some miles on them. I drive highway, town, mud & snow so I will see how they do. December 28, 2011
Rated 1 out of 5 by junk in snow Live In Canada just got some snow these tires are junk no traction in snow old Goodyear wranglers original tire was better when new, tire are maybe 4 months old they are junk not an all season tire good in wet junk in snow,Now have to go spend more money on tires to replace these not very happy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11 December 26, 2011
Rated 3 out of 5 by Great looking tire Just Bought a set of BFG Rugged Terrain 285/75/16 E load range tires to replace my Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armors 285/75/16's. The Goodyears always had balance issues, these Terrain's only have an ounce or so on each compared to 4 or 5 oz.'s on the Goodyears. These go down the road very quietly and feel well holding the road. My only problem is the tread width of the tire is an 1" less than the Goodyears. This might not be a problem for most, but it bothers me alot. I read the stat sheet and everything matched up with the Goodyears stats, but when they were put on they just didn't look right. I'm stuck with them now. December 18, 2011
Rated 4 out of 5 by So far so good Bought these tires a week ago after looking at tires for 2 months. Decided to go BFG since I've had them in the past and they have served me well. These tires we're installed on my 09 Chevy Colorado Z71 V8, size 265/70/17. The new Rugged Terrain T/A's look and ride great. I've put over 300 miles on them this week. The tread is deeper than what I expected for a standard load tire which is great. Absolutely 0 road noise so far as expected. I look forward to see how they will handle on the slick boat ramps this spring and the mild snow we may encounter. Haven't had a chance to go off-road with them yet but I would imagine they would be great if you don't use the tires for something they're not intended for such as thick mud, etc... December 14, 2011
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great Looking Tire Just installed a set of LT265/75R/16 on my 2004 F250 4X4 with a slide on camper in the bed. The tires performed quite well. Very quite even with the aggressive tread pattern. Put 3,500 miles on them in 4 weeks and they handled well in the rain, sand and gravel roads. December 7, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by great tire! great tire!!! would definatley get these on all my trucks. Very satisfied. December 6, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Another Great Tire From BFGoodrich!!! These BfG Rugged terrain P245/70R16 tires are bolted up to my 2000 Jeep Grand Chreokee. I purchased these tires for the reason they were created for. All Work and All Play! Lots of highway driving, moderate towing and mild offroad. These tire's handle great on the highway especially at increased highway speeds with ruduced noise. I towed a 25 ft I-Beam trailer from NYC to the Florida Keys with no problems. And almost every weekend in the summer these tires handeled dirt roads, deep sand and mild shoreline rocks to get me to my favorite fighing Hole, Montauk, NY. These tires look Great and are Great! Another Great tire from BFG! December 3, 2011
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great First Impressions I recently replaced the Toyo A/Ts (after 36,000 miles, including a lot of Baja miles) with the Rugged Terrains in P265/70/17 on our 2008 Tacoma DCLB 4WD. We were just down in Baja for the SCORE Baja 1000, as part of the support for an off road race team. To double-check a portion of the course, we drove the coastal portion of the race course including a very steep, rocky uphill climb in Erindera. The new Rugged Terrains were great in the sand (seemed to dig in a little less than the more squared-off Toyos), were great in the rocky gullies and on the hill climb. This is in addition to being very smooth riding and quiet on the highway. Great first impressios. Now, I'll see about milage and longer-term durability. November 20, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Value Tire I just rolled 60,000 miles on my 2011 F-250 SWB 4x4 crew cab and there is still 1/8" of tread left on all 4 tires. The tires are 265 70R 17, load range: E. 80% of the miles are highway and 20% of those [80%] miles are while pulling a goose-neck trailer between 15 - 20,000 lbs. I estimate that I will get at least 80,000 miles out of these tires. I have never gotten this many miles, under the applications that I use my truck for, out of a set of tires of this size and type. Typically, I get about 45 - 50,000 out of a set of competitive size and type tires. November 5, 2011
Rated 4 out of 5 by So Far So Good @ 10,000km Purchased the Rugger Terrain as an alternative to the All Terrain. So far I've driven 10,000Km mounted on a 2008 Nissan Titan SE in British Columbia, Canada Excellent wet weather performance Minimal wear indicated No negative performance to gas mileage Quiet, the ALL Terrain is much noisier All I need for logging roads and the odd 4x4 road Have not yet driven in snow October 31, 2011
Rated 3 out of 5 by I've had worse Put these on my new F-150 XLT. I use the truck about 50/50 work and commute. I work construction in mostly rural areas and the truck spends a fair amount of time in light off road conditions. The tire is noisy and doesn't love being off the beaten path too far. Seem to have the negative on-road qualities you would expect from a purpose built off-road tire without actually delivering on the off-road capabilities. I won't cry when I eventually drive over a nail on the work site and have to toss these things but I'm not crying keeping them on either I guess. October 19, 2011
Rated 3 out of 5 by OK Tire Tires came on my 2010 F J Cruiser. Have 17k on them & wear seems about what you'd expect. Work really well on packed snow & ice. Taking them off now & puting on either TKOs or KM2s. I've run meny sets of TKOs & they're a far better tire in every way. I might try the KM2s but am concerend with wear. Ya get what ya pay for. October 14, 2011
Rated 1 out of 5 by Noisy, Noisy, Noisy I use these tires for 95% on road driving. Thought they were a good look for an all terrain. They are the loudest tires i have ever had, and I used to have mud tires on a jeep. I might as well have super swampers on my truck. I only have about 4-5,000 miles on these tires, and I have rotated them. I would not recommend these tires to anyone. I am extremely disappointed. When I first purchased the tires one had to be replaced because it was out of round and made my truck vibrate excessively. October 9, 2011
