Installed on a 1997 Volkswagen Passat VR6 Automatic, in hopes of getting a bit more life out of an aging power steering system. Prior to installation, steering effort would increase significantly over time, going from one-finger operation when cold, to two hands required at all times when hot.
After installation, steering effort still increased over time, but noticeably less than before. This has been a consistent result since installation.
The product itself is quite flimsy. The included mounting hardware doesn't work as well with this small unit, as there's really only room to install two of the included four zip-tie type clamps. This leaves the cooler able to rock up and down a bit, as well as twist slightly.
The included hardware (hose clamps, splice union) are poor quality; the splice union leaked a lot even when the vehicle was not running (reservoir dry overnight). I replaced it with a 3/8 inch brass barb splice, which did not leak.
The included hose clamps are very stiff, and require a very firm grip and a lot of pressure on the screwdriver/socket to turn, which made installation difficult.
Given the low cost of this unit, I would recommend also purchasing a high-quality set of hose clamps to use instead of the ones supplied. This will ease installation significantly, especially in tight spaces.
Without having temperature measures before and after to compare, it's hard to know for sure just how much it's helping, but my gut instinct is that while it does make a difference, a larger unit (or second unit plumbed in series) may be beneficial on vehicles with no factory power steering cooler.
Despite these drawbacks, given the purchase price, I'm happy with the product. Would buy again, and recommend.
