We had a better cargo pod that we purchased from Pep Boys years ago but it met its fate driving through a parking deck (how stupid). Got this one which required considerable assembly unlike the first one and you really need two people just to get it together. When used it was OK but the back lift support basically no longer works and will not support the lid to keep it open. This is due to a very warped lid that is also difficult to close. The price was decent but you really get what you pay for. I think for about $50 more you could really do considerably better. Would not purchase this one again.

This holds quite a bit of stuff and is a good buy for the price. However, NOTE that if you don't have a lip on your car to attach the (NOT-included) clips to your car, get ready to become creative. The night before our trip we discovered that the clips weren't included. Then after going back to the store and buying them, found that they would need to be bent and we would need to get very creative and literally tie the back of the carrier to the car. Lucky for us, it stayed on the car. Note: This is very noisy, possibly due to our creativity.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Ronk The Sportrack Explorer 18 Roof Top Carrier is terrible!
The Sportrack Explorer 18 Roof Top Carrier is an engineering nightmare when it comes to assembly. The designers didn't consider the many challenges that users would face in putting this carrier together. In addition, the manufacturing team didn't test its quality. The one I received had side supports that either collapsed or jammed, making it very difficult to load and unload this carrier. Plus, the front locks (which are so crucial to safety) required constant adjustment to make them work. As a result, the user is never confident that they alone will keep the unit from opening while on the road, so bungee straps are a must. Also, it took me 3 hours to mount the unit on my car due to the poorly engineered u-bolts that the company made me purchase separately. All in all, this is a product that should never have made it out of the concept phase.

This is the first roof box I purchased, so I don't know if this is a common problem. This product is not easy to put together!! It took me 4 hours and I am fairly handy. and you will need another person to hold parts in place. But, the real problem was installing the box on the roof using the additional u-bolts. There is no simple way to do it. In the end I ended up taking the cross bars off and installing them to the box and then putting it back on the roof. Don't buy I'll sell you mine cheap.

The shell is a bit flimsy but holds its structure once clamped down and locked. I have no problem doing 70 - 80 on the freeways. It looks pretty nice from afar. Up close, you can tell it is not the best quality. The U-bolt kit is a must.
I created a jig with ply wood and 1"x4" as a base in side the cargo area that spans across the cross bars to give it strength. I was able to put a lot of stuff with this cargo carrier. I used this a few times already.
Not a Thule quality and also a fraction of the price.

It went together pretty easily, and tied down to the crossbars with no problem. We got a hefty discount by buying it online and then picking it up at our local Pep Boys. They had it ready and helped carry it out.

It took us about three hours to put the SportRack Explorer together. Not too difficult, just time consuming. We went on a 2300 mile road trip in August, so we feel like we put this carrier through extreme conditions testing: 110-degree heat, torrential downpours of rain, 75 mph driving speeds and the Explorer stood up to it all. No leaks, no melting, no popping open. This is a great little carrier with lots of room to carry all your stuff! Don't forget to buy the SportRack U-Bolts if you are going to mount it to your rooftop rack because they are sold separately.
