Although the Valve Covers look good in appearance, they were not made very well. Two of the mounting bolt tubes promptly broke off before they were fully tightened down. Also, for the price, I would have expected them to come with the gaskets, which they did not. Once they were installed they did look pretty good. The plastic washers, which are mounted just under the mounting wing nuts, were extremely thin & cheap. 6 of the 8 promptly ripped when initially installed. This allowed for oil to eventually seap from all that had torn. I replaced them with some nylon washers to correct the issue. The better nylon washers only cost me $2.00, so for them to have been included with the kit would have been a worth while upgrade at nearly NO cost to the manufacturer. (Since in bulk these would have been only a few cents each). As for the tubes that broke, this is a manufacturing issue. The tack welds that held them in place were clearly insufficient. They should have been welded completely around, 360degs, to prevent this from happening. The breakage was NOT due to over tightening, since I was at least a complete turn or more from that point. When/if the time comes to replace the valve covers, I will NOT chose these as a replacement, unless I can see that these issues have been addressed by the manufacturer. This is, in NO way, a negative reflection on Pepboys. You don't make them, that I'm aware of, but only sell the product. My experiences in the local Pepboys, on Hutton Lane in Virginia Beach, have always been very good. The only gripe I have with the company is with the web site. It's very annoying that at times it will NOT allow you to browse through various areas without you having to enter the year/make/model & engine type for parts you want to view. This makes it difficult when looking for an item if you're doing any kind of customization work. Sometimes it's form/fit/function that you're looking for. So you HAVE lost some sales, from me anyways, because of this issue. And to go into the store & consume a lot of an employees time, to attempt to achieve the same thing, only leads to frustration for both them & myself. Sometimes one may not actually know what will solve their problem, until they actually see the item. So to make the web site a little more versatile for this type of work, could only lead to better sales, in my opinion. One last issue, is that not all of your local stores carries the same type or amount of after market items. The store on Military Hwy, in Norfolk, carries a MUCH larger variety/volume of these items. The store on Lynnhaven Pkwy is somewhere in the middle of the two. And all 3 stores "seem" to be of approximately the same size. I know of several people who've also noticed this as well. The Norfolk store should be the "model" for the other 2 stores to step up to. There's absolutely NO doubt this would be beneficial to Pepboys bottom line, in this area. I hope this helps you to make positive changes in the near future.
