I found conflicting reports that they .020" thick or .030" thick. I asked the Mr. Gasket company and got the report they were .020" so I ordered them from Pep Boys. They came quick. I am well satisfied with Pep Boys. The gaskets don't look anything like the original steel shim gaskets. The fire ring has the steel folded over making it twice as thick there and that ring is filled with some sort of sealer, like silicone? The compressed thickness ends up at .030". Not much thinner than the composition gaskets. I torqued the heads down and then took them off and checked the gaskets. I'm sure they would seal at the fire ring, cylinder area but the beads for the coolant passages were barely compressed. I threw the gaskets away and used the Fel Pro composition gaskets that were .040" thick. I didn't want to have any problems and wasn't going to gain enough compression to take the chance. Why can't a company make steel shim head gaskets like those that were OEM on Ford and GM engines in the 60's. They gave very little problem. I am an ASE Master Mechanic with over 40 years experience.
