What a wonderful world it would be if we all enjoyed holiday road trips. We may not always feel jolly stuck in holiday traffic, but there are a variety of ways to make it much more enjoyable.

One person thinks of something, and the other people ask a series of 20 yes-or-no questions to guess what it is. The person who guesses correctly before 20 questions is the winner and starts off the next round.

Someone says a name, and then the next person has to say a name that begins with the last letter of that name, and so on. Anyone who repeats a name or gets stumped loses the round. You can continue with the remaining players, or the loser of the last round can start off with
a new name.

A person starts with the phrase, “I spy with my little eye something…” and says the first letter or color of the object he or she sees. The rest of the people in the car get chances to ask yes-or-no questions until they correctly guess what the person spies. The winner gets to start a new round.

Turn on the radio and move the dial until you hear a song, and see who can name the tune first.

Look at the letters on a license plate and make up what they might stand for— IPBWT means, “In Pep Boys We Trust.” Everyone in the car comes up with an answer before moving on to the next letter combination. Prepare to have a lot of fun with this one.

Host a full-fledged spelling bee and take turns quizzing the other passengers’ spelling skills. Warning: You may experience sharp shots to the ego during this game.

Name three famous people and decide which one you’d dump, which one you’d date and which one you’d tie-the-knot with. If you’re adventurous and enjoy dabbling in dangerous waters, name three people you know instead.

One person picks a word, and then each person has to say a word that rhymes with it. Whoever drops the pace loses and has to think of a new word.

Everyone picks a color, and each person counts all of the passing cars in their color. Whoever reaches X number of cars first wins. No cheating!

Pick a place to hide (figuratively speaking, since you can’t physically leave the car), and see who can guess where you are based on descriptions and yes-or-no questions.
