What is a PCV Valve and how does it work

What is it?

  • A Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve is an element of your vehicles emission system.

How Does it Work?

  • The PCV valve connects via a hose to the crankcase.
  • It moderates dirty air and gases from crankcase.
  • The leftover material is then returned to intake manifold to be burned again in the combustion chambers.

How is it Made?

  • Most are drawn, stamped or molded material that has a valve that controls the flow from the crankcase to the air filter box.

Why Does it Fail?

  • Over a period of time, 12 months or 12,000 miles, the valve can be become clogged and or restrictive.
  • It comes off the crankcase and release fumes that can be corrosive, sticky and or carbon filled. All can lead to restriction and or failure.

What are the Symptoms of Failure?

  • Rough idle.
  • Tough starting.
  • Poor fuel economy.
  • Check engine light.

What are the Implications of Failure?

  • No start.
  • Sudden engine failure.
