Breathers

Breathers

Breathers are a part of your vehicles emission system. Breathers allow air movement between the atmosphere and the component it is installed in and relieves heat in the engine to increase performance.

What is a breather and how does it work

What is it?

  • Breathers are the other half of a crankcase emission system. A breather filter cleans the air that is drawn to the crankcase that is later let out by the PCV valve.

How Does it Work?

  • Breather filters usually are contained in a slot or small box that connects to the air box then to crankcase. They clean the air that travels through it.

How is it Made?

  • Most are a block or square of media material that is cut or formed.

Why Does it Fail?

  • Like most filters, type of duty impacts life or failure.
  • They can become clogged and need to changed 12 months or 12,000 miles.

What are the Symptoms of Failure?

  • Rough idle.
  • Tough starting.
  • Poor fuel economy.
  • Check engine light.

What are the Implications of Failure?
