ABS Brakes

ABS Brakes

The anti-lock brake system (ABS) is a safety enhancement to the hydraulic brake system that shortens braking distance and enhances vehicle control by regulating individual wheel brake pressure with much greater precision than conventional braking.

What are ABS Brakes

How Does it Work?

  • Uses a combination of your car’s electronic control unit, wheel speed sensors and brake hydraulic modulator.
  • Speed sensors at the wheels detect and report changes in wheel speed during braking.
  • Sensor sends signal to your engine control unit (ECU).
  • Electronic Control Unit (ECU) receives and processes the speed sensor(s) signal.
  • Individual wheel lockup during braking is minimized, thus the “anti-lock” function.

How is it Made?

  • Precision computer map tailored to the vehicle.
  • Integrated into the brake hydraulics.
  • Failsafe to ensure normal brake hydraulics if ABS fails.

Why Does it Fail?

  • Contaminated brake fluid causes restriction and internal corrosion.
  • Wheel speed sensor failure.
  • Motors fail.

What are the Symptoms of Failure?

  • ABS warning light will appear.
  • System will rely back on manual braking methods.

What are the Implications of Failure?

  • Integral units will need to be fully replaced.
  • Increased braking distance and reduced vehicle stability under braking.

How Difficult is the Install?

Difficulty Rating:

Note: Installation difficulty varies by vehicle.
