Headlights provide illumination at night or in low light conditions and help you be seen while driving on the road. Like all other light bulbs, headlight bulbs eventually burn out and need to be replaced. However, there are some signs you can look for to help you determine when your headlights may need to be replaced.

Dim Headlights

Always take note of how bright your headlights are when driving at night. Over time, headlight bulbs can wear out and begin to dim. A dim headlight will not provide proper illumination and can be a sign that the bulb is approaching the end of its service life.

Flickering Headlights

If your headlights begin to flicker on and off, this is another telltale sign that your bulb may be at the end of its lifespan. This happens when bulb filaments become damaged or excessively worn, or it could be a sign of a bad harness or connection. A flickering bulb will usually burn out soon after the issue has begun. To stay on the safe, visit your local service center to get this issue checked out.

Headlight is Out

With time and regular use, headlight bulbs will get to a point where they burn out and cease to function. A headlight that is out is most likely a sign that the bulb needs to be replaced. It is highly recommended you replace your headlights in pairs, as the opposite headlight has a similar level of wear, making its illumination level subpar to the new bulb. Watch the video to see an example of this.

Hazy Headlight

Headlight staining, yellowing, and contamination can be caused by oxidation from salt, UV rays, and humidity, which results in dull and hazy illumination. Dull or hazy performing lights either need a fresh polish or an upgraded replacement. Fortunately, Pep Boys has all of the tools and service skills you need to make your headlights as good as new. While you can perform your own headlight restoration, you might prefer to leave this service to the professionals.

Without proper illumination, driving at night can be dangerous for you and others on the road. If your vehicle is displaying any of the symptoms above or one of your headlights has burned out, have your vehicle diagnosed by a professional technician at your local Pep Boys to determine if the bulb should be replaced.
