Cabin Air Filter

Cabin air filters are comparable to the AC or furnace filter in your home. The air that is blown inside your vehicle passes through the cabin air filter to be cleansed, making it healthier for you and your passengers to breathe. Cabin air filters are designed to protect drivers and passengers from pollen, smoke, smog, mildew, dander, fungus, dust and other pollutants from the outside environment. That’s why it’s important to check your cabin air filter if you notice any of the following warning signs.

Reduced airflow from the AC vents

One of the most common signs that you should replace your air filter is reduced airflow. Reduced airflow means less air being expelled from the AC system’s vents. When the filter is dirty or clogged, less air is able to pass through.

Breathing Problems

If you’re experiencing breathing problems, headaches or allergic reactions while driving then there’s a chance your cabin air filter needs to be replaced. When a filter is clogged, it is no longer able to prevent dust and allergens from entering the cabin. This may also be a potential sign that the AC filter may have been damaged and is allowing unfiltered air through.

If you start to detect a dirty or musty smell from the air vents, this is a telltale sign that you may need a new cabin air filter. Sometimes this can happen over time, without any apparent notice, so it’s important to never dismiss an abnormal smell that comes through your car’s air vents.

Reduced Power Output from the Engine

If the cabin air filter becomes clogged, an additional strain is placed on the AC blower motor. This added strain will cause the blower motor to work harder and blow less air than it’s designed to. It will also place a strain on the engine, due to the higher demand of electricity. In more severe cases, the additional strain will result in a noticeable reduction of power when the AC is turned on.

Window Fogging

Increased window fogging in colder temperatures is a clear sign that you’re experiencing heating or cooling inefficiencies. It’s a good idea to get your cabin air filter checked out to make sure it’s not having a clogging issue.

Reduced Horsepower

If you’ve noticed a recognizable difference in your car’s horsepower, it could be a cabin air filter concern. A vehicle’s engine provides power for the air conditioning system - so when the cabin filter is clogged, the system has to work harder and requires more power from the engine. This reduces power to other components, such as the drive train and alternator. As more power is sacrificed in order to meet the needs of the AC system, overall horsepower and performance will suffer.

Inspection Time Lapse

Regular replacement helps keep the air in your cabin safe for you and your passengers. If it has been more than a year since your air filter was last inspected, you should seriously consider replacing it. As the cabin air filter eliminates contaminants from the air, it accumulates waste. Over time, the filter clogs with debris, which can cause problems with the heater and air conditioner. Regular replacements will greatly improve the performance of your AC system.
