What you should Know about Cleaning Your Rims

Are your dirty rims standing in the way of that sleek, new-car look you have worked so hard for? Or perhaps you are tirelessly washing them every week, only to find that they are just as dirty a few days later? Trust us, we know the feeling. We also know that shiny rims are often the center piece of your well-oiled machine and without the shine, your car just fades in with the rest of the pack.

A lot of the frustration of tarnished wheels actually comes from the source. Most drivers would assume that the contaminant is being picked up from the road, when in reality, it is probably coming from the car itself. When your brake rotors squeeze against your brake pads, they tend to break tiny particles off of worn out brake pads. In car enthusiast circles, these particles are often called brake dust. If this is a frequent problem, you should look into getting your brake pads replaced, as these contaminants can often cause long-term corrosion to the surface of your wheels. If you’re looking to rid this contaminant issue for your wheels, upgrade your wheels to ceramic to cut down on brake dust.

In the meantime, if you are looking to get your rims looking brand new, here are the steps you need to take back your shine:

1 Bucket of Soap & Water,
1 Bucket of Water

Cleaning wheels is really simple once you have the right tools. We recommend a soft bristle brush because it is more thorough than a cloth or towel and won’t risk scratching your rims like you may see from tougher brushes. Having a separate bucket for washing and rinsing makes the most sense here because you do not want to be scrubbing contaminants back on to the wheel that you just scrubbed off. Finally, there are several wheel cleaning solutions and sprays to choose from on the market, so be sure to check out reviews to find out which ones work best.

  1. Soak your brush in the bucket of soap and water for a few minutes before starting. This softens the brush’s bristles and allows the soap to sink in.
  2. Spray the entire surface of each wheel with your wheel cleaning solution. Let the solution sit for a few minutes so that it can react with the pollutants. You will see the particles of brake dust begin to run down the wheel with the solution, making it easier to scrub off.
  3. From here, you can begin to scrub the surface of each wheel in circular motions with moderate pressure. As the brush begins to fill with brake dust, water and solution, rinse it in the water bucket before reapplying soap and water to the brush. When it looks like your wheel is free of any brake dust or other residue, be sure to wipe it down with your microfiber towel, and your rims should be shining like new.
The whole wheel cleaning process is really simple, but it takes some time and a little understanding of where the dirt is coming from. Replacing your worn brake pads or upgrading to ceramic or high-performance brake pads can help cut down
on the brake dust on your wheels.
