Summer is the best time for road trips to the beach and fun in the sun. It's also the time that your car is most susceptible to car trouble. Temperature fluctuations and summer heat can be stressful for our vehicles. With the rise of hot weather, the high temperatures that are already happening under your hood are compounded. Your cooling and ventilation systems have to work even harder at keeping your vehicle protected. It's easy for a vehicle to break down under hot weather conditions, so it's crucial to keep an eye on the following vulnerable areas:

Batteries are affected by temperature extremes, hot or cold. Periodically check the condition of your battery in the summer. To make sure it is free from corrosion, keep it topped off with distilled water. If you're worried your battery is already deteriorating, read our Signs of a Failing Battery article to find out more or Make an Appointment to get it checked out.

Tires are built to last, but they're not indestructible. Excessive heat can cause the air inside your tires to expand. Sudden tire failure can have serious consequences, especially if it occurs at highway speeds or in a vehicle with a high center of gravity. If you need new tires, visit our Tires by Vehicle page to find the best new tires for your ride. In the meantime, to reduce the risk of blowouts, check tire pressure regularly and keep your tires properly inflated.

Cooling System

The job of the cooling system is to regulate engine temperature for maximum fuel economy, power and component life as well as emissions. Failure to maintain the cooling system often results in overheating—and eventually a breakdown. Have your cooling system checked at the beginning of the summer. The cooling system keeps the engine cool, and allows the AC system to function properly. If your car is blowing warm air or you're worried something may be wrong with your cooling system, read our Cooling System Warning Signs page to find out.

The radiator is the primary component of the engine cooling system, and with the support of the thermostat, it regulates engine temperature. An overheated engine can quickly lead to a breakdown that will leave you stranded. Make sure your radiator is filled with the fluid it needs to prevent overheating.
