Modern-day cars are powered by electricity and require additional components to keep them operating smoothly. A special motor is attached to the window glass within each door, enabling the windows to be raised or lowered at the push of a button and these motors are plumbed into the car’s electrical system to receive power from the vehicle’s battery.

What Is a Window Motor?
The window motor is a relatively simple component that provides power to a series of gears, which are responsible for pushing the window glass up or pulling it down. They are connected to a switch, which is placed next to the door handle and can be activated by pulling a lever or pressing a rocker. It is possible to stop and start the motor during each phase, so that the window can be “set” in a location.
How do Window Motors Work?
Power window motors are made with permanent magnet technology to help increase their reliability. The motor turns a worm gear through the armature, which operates a drive gear mounted at 90°. The drive gear is attached to the regulator, which helps to smooth out the action and ensure safe window operation.
How are Window Motors Made?
The window motor is only one part of the mechanism required to raise or lower a window; the system also requires a regulator in order to work properly. The motors themselves are created as one unit by the factory and are typically long-lasting. However, the motor brushes within can fail from time to time.
Why do Window Motors Fail?
- A blown fuse or a bad relay.
- Inadequate voltage.
- Failure of the drive rollers on the regulator.
What Are Failure Symptoms?
- Nothing happens when the switch is activated.
- The motor runs but the window does not move.
What Are the Implications of a Failure?
- Poor ventilation.
- A stuck window and/or exposure to outside elements.
As part of a larger system, the window motor provides the energy required to open and close the windows of a vehicle.
