When do you need engine diagnostics?

Any of these symptoms may indicate the need for engine diagnostic services or repairs to your vehicle:

  • Engine light on
  • Slow cranking
  • Rough idling
  • Pings or knocks when accelerating
  • Decreased fuel efficiency

Pep Boys technicians will inspect your engine system and perform engine diagnostics, providing you with a complete analysis of the current conditions and a repair cost estimate.

Based on the Diagnostic readings, some engine components that may need to be serviced include:

  • Emissions
  • Engine sensors, including: crank/cam sensor, oxygen sensor, airflow sensor, EGR sensor, MAP sensor, temperature sensor, throttle position sensor
  • Coil packs
  • Distributor cap and rotor
  • Ignition wires
  • Ignition module
  • Fuel pump

No Start/No Run Diagnosis

Diagnosis of problems for vehicles that crank properly but will not start. Determines if the cause of no start problem is mechanical, ignition or induction and determine necessary repair.

Check Engine Light Service

Is your engine light trying to tell you something? Why not find out? The “check engine” light on cars 1994 and newer could be directing you to problems with your emissions system or engine controls. Pep Boys’ “Check Engine Light” Service will make sure that little light doesn’t mean big problems. Includes:

  • Retrieve and identify any codes stored within the vehicle’s on-board computer system
  • This service is included at no charge, when purchasing any other diagnostic or tune-up service

Computerized Engine Diagnostic Service

For vehicles that run but run poorly, stall, hesitate, or suffer reduced gas mileage. Pep Boys expert technicians will perform a special computerized diagnosis that will identify the problem. Includes:

  • Road test
  • Complete engine performance diagnostic test
  • Fuel pressure test
  • Visual inspection of emissions system and other underhood systems
  • Retrieve computer codes to identify potential problem areas.

Charging, Starting System Diagnosis

Includes the following:

  • Remove battery clamps and test battery using computerized tester prior to testing starting and charging system
  • Conduct alternator and starter system analysis
  • Verify that system voltage exists at all alternator and starter points
  • Recommended schedule: Inspection every 24,000 miles*
