If the pad depth is less than 3/32 of an inch, replace soon.
If less then 2/32 of an inch, Replace immediately. They will soon be damaging the drum or rotor.
If you hear a high pitched screeching noise, this could be the wear sensor on some pads indicating the pads need to be replaced soon.
If you hear a much deeper metal on metal scraping sound, this probably indicates the pad backing plate is grinding on the rotor and both will probably need to be replaced.
Indicator light comes on. Some cars come with a wear indicator that tells you the pads need to be replaced.
