Maintain Correct Tire Pressure

The number one cause in premature tire wear is incorrect tire pressure.

Air Pressure / Valve Stems—Not Just Hot Air

All tires require constant air pressure to equally carry the weight of the vehicle. Correct air pressure is a definite requirement in order to assure dependable handling, consistent traction and tire life.

Seasonal temperatures change the air pressure in tires. Cold winter weather will cause the air pressure to drop. Warm summer temperatures will cause the air pressure to increase. Rule of thumb is a swing in temperature by 10 degrees will cause a 1 lb. change in a tires air pressure.

Check the manufacturer's recommended air pressure which can be found in the owners manual or on the vehicle placard found in the glove compartment or in the armrest compartment in most cars.

We recommend a good quality air pressure gauge to be kept in your vehicle at all times. Air gauges found a service stations are used daily and may not always record accurate air pressure. By purchasing your own gauge you will always be consistent in air pressure readings.

Valve Stems

The number one cause of premature tire wear is incorrect air pressure, too much or too little. We at Pep Boys recommend the purchase of valve stems at the time of your tire purchase. A valve stem, like a tire, has a life span. As valve stems are exposed to the different weather conditions and the changes in ozone levels they have a tendency to become brittle and cracked, causing a loss of air pressure. The purchase of a valve stem can in add life to your tire purchase.
