Ignition 101

The spark plug delivers a spark that ignites an air/fuel mixture delivered into the engine's cylinder. There are many types of spark plugs to meet the demands of each type of motor and cylinder head configuration. Pep Boys offers a wide variety of spark plugs to meet almost any engine and cylinder head configuration.

Pep Boys offers performance plugs from companies such as:

  • Accel
  • Autolite
  • Bosch
  • Champion
  • Denso
  • Ford Racing
  • NGK
  • Nology
  • Roush

Ignition wires are used to transfer the high energy produced by the coil to the spark plugs. Most current ignition systems now use fiber or carbon cores to deliver the high energy. New age technology developed by the aftermarket industry allows the best of both worlds.

Pep Boys offers performance ignition wires from companies such as:

  • Accel
  • MSD
  • Nology
  • Taylor

An ignition coil's job is to transform battery voltage into short burst of high energy. Aftermarket coils often produce much higher voltages over the OE (original equipment). Several companies offer many types of high performance coils for different applications.

Pep Boys offers performance ignition coils from companies such as:

  • Accel
  • Hypertech
  • Jacobs
  • Mallory
  • MSD
  • Pertronix

The distributor is connected to the spark plugs and the coil by the ignition wires. Like all other components in the ignition system, there are many different choices and configurations of distributors you can use.

Pep Boys offers performance ignition distributors from companies such as:

  • Accel
  • Mallory
  • MSD
  • Proform

An ignition box (C/D box, multi strike ignition box) can be added to just about any ignition system. It's purpose is to amplify voltage thru out the RPM range. Some new ignition boxes utilize a digital micro-processor which are more accurate and faster.
